Using Kiln Wash

Keeping your kiln shelf clean is important to ensure your creations fire properly. During the firing process, glass, enamels, glazes and other materials can stick to your ceramic shelf. Anything that sticks to the shelf would need to be ground away, leaving a gouge on an expensive shelf. Kiln Wash is an inexpensive and easy solution to maintaining your kiln furniture.

I bought my kiln in the mail and it came with this bag of kiln wash. And I was like why.

Nice, thank you!! Couple of questions: After a number of uses, shouldn't I remove it completely and apply again? Also, can I wash it away with water?

Hello, when something sticks to the kiln wash, it can simply be ground off using a small hand held grinder. Grinding will send chips of material flying, so do this outside and use a mask and safety goggles to protect yourself. Thanks for watching!

Hi do you need to put kiln wash every glaze firing?

Why do your instructions not match the instructions on the kiln wash package? They say to mix it 5-1, water to powder, which gives you a watery mixture. They say to apply 5 coats in different directions to avoid 'lines' in the finished piece also.

Hello, I think you may have a different type of kiln wash as I am looking at the kiln wash now and do not see these instructions. I hope this helps.

Most instructions seem to prefer multiple coats of thin kiln wash. I'm going with the majority instructions on this one
