Many thanks again, Nick, useful info. I’m currently trying the ‘quadratic hive’ principle as described by Phil Chandler on KZfaq. Had some success with them last year but hopefully, using similar techniques to those described here, will be able to mate some more good, black queens in them without expending too too many bees stocking them.

I know they're popular, but they strike me as a device that allows you to produce queens relatively quickly, but they do little to allow you to effectively evaluate a young queens laying pattern.

Do you take the bees out an existing hive? How do you move the mini colony into a standard hive? Artificial swarm?
