As a Russian I can say that there is no difference between "НАДО" and "НУЖНО" in ordinary life. You can use both of them and no one will get you wrong

На самом деле, разница есть, просто воспринимая это на подсознательном уровне мы её не осознаём, например ты ведь не скажешь, "мне надо телефон" ты скажешь "мне нужен телефон" и тд

If you're like me when I first started out with Russian, the conjugation of "нужно" will really throw you off. 3:04 is the absolute best part of this video. In English, the conjugation of "need" follows the subject... I need, you need, he needs etc. But in Russian, the conjugation follows the object!!! This is so important, it's completely backward from English! "сегодня будет жарко, мне нужны шорты."... "нужны" because "шорты" is plural. "ему нужна ручка для экзамена."... "нужна" because "ручка" is feminine even though the subject is masculine, "ему". I am embarrassed about how long it took me to figure out why "нам нужен бензин?" is correct, when "нам" is plural... "нужно" follows the object. огромное спасибо за видео, ваши уроки всегда очень полезны!
@Rus-eq5wn4 ай бұрын
"нам" и plural but "бензин" is not.
@clove9c3c4 ай бұрын
@@Rus-eq5wn Exactly, but to a native English speaker... this concept is backward. If I change my example around a little, "he is needing shorts today because of the hot weather", "ему сегодня нужны шорты из-за жаркой погоды". You can see the "is" in the sentence... in English, the "need" follows the subject singular "he" and not the plural object "shorts". And as for the example about needing gas (petrol), "do we need gas?", "нам нужен бензин?", the "we need"... one would assume that "нужен" should be "нужены" because "we" is plural... but this is incorrect. In English, the conjugation follows the subject in terms of gender/plurality. "he needs", "we need"... but in Russian, it's better to read it backward (or, at least backward to an English speaker)... "the shorts are needed to him", "is gasoline needed to us?" Which is why I highlighted that section in the video... this is a great example of "thinking like a Russian", because thinking in English will get you the wrong translation. I kind of wish there were more examples in the video of mixing genders (singular m/f with plural object, or plural subject with m/f objects), because this is an area where English speaker's default mode will produce incorrect sentences.
@clove9c3c4 ай бұрын
@user-vv5zz1dc4c4 ай бұрын
The thing here is that "мне" is not a subject, thought it is in the first place in the sentence. It is an object technically. Because it is a form of dative case of "я". Я нуждаюсь в шортах. But this kind of phrase sounds weird to the natives. We use the backward construction with нужно, where the subject is the thing that is needed. so the conjugation follows the subject anyway. it is something similar to the passive voice in English : the house was built by the workers. Here the verb is singular though the "actor", workers - is plural.

@@Rus-eq5wn Latine is approximately 2500 years old language and it affected all European languages. While people were speaking in Latin, there was no Russian language. Even 1000 years ago, no Russian language. Your ancestors were speaking in Eastern Slavic. So Such Latin words has been borrowed from Latin across French. It was very interesting to see some main verbs and words from Latin while I was learning Russian . For example, видеть-videre, сидеть -sidere in Latin.
@Rus-eq5wn4 ай бұрын
I have a feeling that it is other way around.. Latin was created in opposite to Russian language - to separate countries on west of Europe from Russia (old Rus). Saying that by watching Ukraine - 100 years ago it did not exist, now they have own language made of a Russian dialect, next step will be converting it to latin letters. as it was done in Pole before and other Slavic nations in Europe. So if we would live let's say a 1000 years at least we all would see it clearly. Official history is written by west countries to say opposite so Russia would look like it's younger but it's not. All white people in Europe was same nation - with same language - old Russian, I am saying old Russian as I am learning English and finding it is very bad Russian, i am finding new common words everyday. Latin alphabet consist of 24 letters while old Russian alphabet consist of 49 letters. It's impossible to create alphabet with more letters from smaller number of letter alphabet. But other way around it is very possible. Even current Russian alphabet contains of 33 letters. So all of those vedere, sidere - came from Russian - as in Russian there are many other words exist with such roots: ВИДео, ВИДение, ясноВИДение, предВИДение, приВИДЕние, телеВИДение, ВИД, ВИДно, заВИДно, etc. in English some words with vision and video exist, but vision is already modified from vid. view is also modified from vid etc. but in Russian roots are still non modified and same in all similar words. I know it might sound as fantastic to you, but you have to know both languages yourself to do fair analysis of English and Russian.@@muratcamgoz6674

Thanks, this is very helpful. So, if I were to make a comparison to English, надо is like "have got to" (or "have a need to", or "must") do something... For example: I've got to eat, I need to go, or I must know. As in Russian, it wouldn't make sense in English if these words were followed by a noun.
