In this thought provoking episode, we discuss the merit of painting neatly vs detailed and if doing less, (well) can actually get you better results…
Also in this episode, we discuss the relatable topic of painting fear, and how to overcome the thoughts that you might ‘ruin’ your models.
Plus, stay tuned for our hobby hacks and the usual banter you expect, including some nonsense about painting with potatoes, and the aftermath of our premier Paint Perspective Drill Off!

James is correct, boys. I used potato printing to paint when I was a kid in the 80's. As it happens, I work in a nursery and we still carve shapes into potatoes to print with. I wouldn't recommend it as a technique for miniature painting.

Potato painting was absolutely a thing! And isn't just the UK, I'm from the US and we did that in preschool/kindergarten (3-5yrs old). Not sure how old James is, but I'm probably around the same age (mid 30s) (Unrelated, was part of the hardcore scene in my hometown in the 00s/10s and we had our own "Camo Jim". Freaked me out how universal that scene was)

I've painted with a potato. In preschool we had an assortment of paints and utensils, like finger paints, acrylic paints for brushes, water colours, pastel crayons (as well as other kinds of crayons), drawing coal, inks and dyes etc. Experimenting with materials like paper, cloth, eggs, wood, and making tools like stamps (this is where the potato comes in, as well as cork), masking and making stencils with cutting paper and linoleum. Sculpturing with clay using fingers, water, and sculpting tools, and even curing it in proper ovens. Even making and colouring our own sculpting dough out of salt was an essential part. We learned to blend colours, but thinning properly wasn't a concept that I can remember. The brushes was rubbish, the paper couldn't take water colours properly. No airbrush.. no two-component sculpting materials.. Growing up in Sweden in the l70s/80s.

Thanks Guys, this video was a bit of a lightbulb moment for me. I just got back into the hobby after a 30 year hiatus and have since spent an eye watering amount of money on different paint brands and types / brushes / tools etc. thinking that all of them would accelerate the paint process at the same time making me a better painter ...... how wrong I was!! The reality is, (as you all pointed out) unless you understand how to thin a paint, load it correctly on a brush and then apply it with control, precision and pressure, everything beyond this will fail! Back to the basics for me !! To add to this, you now have the respect of a new Patreon member 🙂

This one is for Joe, yes youcan absolutely use potato stamping on any larger reasonably flat surface, but using a slightly stiffer rubber is better and more consistent. Potatoes work because they're cheap, easy to carve into, and soft enough to shape around surface imperfections and slight curvatures. Hard rubber doesn't rot though.

I am shocked that there was a barrel angle discrepancy in the photographs used in the previous episode... who would have ever expected we would have a full on barrel-gate on our hands.... dodgy photo's aside last weeks episode was gem of a podcast... top notch show yet again this week... these podcasts are pure gold.... I have them on in the background at work and occasionally people over hear the episode and get pulled into listening... and for what it's worth I to believe in crowning barrels as well which does make it look better.... also I feel that we as a community need to set up a go fund me page to get George a new pin vice...

The general attitude you guys have on painting reminds me very much of my own perspectives on food preparation. I'm a young chef, and the amount of shortcuts, lifehacks, and gadgets that are in home kitchens is insane, especially when you consider that a skilled hand with a knife, a pot and a pan, could do all of that work. Practise your fundamentals, always.

Couple questions for the lads, as have only got back into the hobby after leaving it in 3rd Edition. - Sub assembly painting, when do yourselves choose it is the right call, if you do it at all? - I have been collecting and painting Harlequins this year and have enjoyed the process of learning hand painting diamond motley on infantry, and making a non-box art colour scheme. But am looking at my sky weavers still in the box, and am really intimidated by the idea of tackling a larger model like vehicles, I know the answer there is ‘just start and trust the process’ but was there any challenges you guys remember with decision paralysis or something similar when having to paint something completely different, and how did you get around it?

Completely agree with George here. I feel like fine art and art in particular lives in this strange world where people seem to assume you’re either talented or not. All skill improves from practice, and without trying and taking that first step you can’t improve. Watching KZfaq tutorials doesn’t get you anywhere unless you start painting. Free “model of the month” from GW is a perfect test model Keep up the good work guys!

TOTALLY agree on the GLOSS varnish save point. It actually helps the painting at this stage. Gloss changes the surface tension of the paints and water and its really useful.

I think the reason there aren't too many brush based tutorials for the Eavy Metal/box art style is just how much of a labour of love they are to film and edit, let alone paint. It's an insane amount time and work to be able to put out that level of tutorial weekly, with commentary and graphics to ride the KZfaq algo. Some of my favourites are the 2 how to paint Dark Angels like the box art vids on the Infernal Brush channel, however you can tell that those hour or so long videos have been edited from 5+ hours of footage and there are still some parts of the process missed out. I'd say those tutorials taught me more about how to paint Eavy Metal than any others on KZfaq, there are also Ultramarines, Black Templars and some great tutorials on there if people are interested in a really visual, close up, step by step guide to box art.

I will say, I bought an ok pin vise from my local hobby store, and the bits that came with it weren't that great. Bought some new, slightly more expensive bits? IMMEDIATELY made the drilling way easier, better, and like 8 times faster. The quality of the bit matters way more than the instrument used to turn it, I'm dying on this hill now.

The hard part with being neat for me is if i start gripping too hard, or am tired, I find it very hard to keep the brush from shaking. Not sure what tips there are to help - i do try bracing, it helps, but also need to make sure my desk space is deep enough for the forearms. Holding the model with interlocking fingers im working on, keep getting tangled up 😂

I can tell you about the lack of neatness with technique: I have physical disabilities that make it very difficult for me to do accurate, repeatable hand movements, but I understand painting, and I've done if for decades. So I can tell you what happens when people look at my models. The lack of neatness will lead to picky complaints, especially with models that demand said neatness, like a Space Marine or basically any Tau model. However, anything that doesn't need to be neat will get great reviews: Tyranids, Seraphon, Deathguard et al. It's mostly a matter of avoiding models that demand high brush control in areas that are the focus point of the miniature. Even the least miniature-centric grandma's eye goes to the part of the miniature that calls attention, and realizes when, say, a kroot's skin texture looks scaley when it has no business doing so, because it's just a tiny piece of plastic.
