These were a new experience for me and a lot of fun to work with! I'm really happy Sennelier has a Portrait set so I didn't have to buy a bunch of oil pastels I didn't want to use, highly recommend! Plus, this particular set came with a wooden box with three drawers for storage, bonus!
Supplies:
Jane Davenport - Whimsical and Wild Book
Sennelier - Oil Pastels, 24 Portrait Assorted Colors
Jane Davenport - Baton Blenders
Jane Davenport - License to Quill Pen

5:08 This image will likely be where ever still drying. Sennelier has a fixative for oil pastels in a spray can, so you can close the books within hours. If you don't have the fixative, see to it, that you have a sheet of glacine to tuck in as a protection layer.

Thank you! I think since it was a heavier paper I lucked out because it dried in a few days… at least we’ll enough to close the book. Now it’s much later and completely dry. But if I work on a less absorbent material I’ll definitely look into the fixative and/or glacine, thank you for the tip! ☺️🧡

I have that Sennelier d'Artigny but I prefer Schwarzkopf Taft hairspray a lot more.

@@KimballsCorner it will never be dry enough not to smear. use a gentle spray of hairspray and that is a "game changer" experience. without Schwarzkopf Taft hairspray oil pastels are total mess, with hairspray they are gorgeous to use in sketchbooks.

24:54 Simply spray with Schwarzkopf Taft hairspray two or three thin gentle layers, and it will look even more gorgeous and smearing disappear immediately. It's the only meaningful way of using oil pastels in sketchbooks

I’m not a big JD fan (just not my thing), but your personality is so sweet and fun, I had to watch! I have a few of these pastels but prefer the Caran D’Ache Neopastels because they’re not quite as smooshy (it’s a real word...). And I do use fixative. Sennelier has an oil pastel that’s really nice.
@KimballsCorner
@KimballsCorner 3 жыл бұрын
JD isn’t for everyone and that’s okay. 😊 I’m not a fan of harder pastels, which is what I thought the Caran d’Ache ones were, so I went with the Sennelier... sooo buttery! They’re a pleasure to use but I definitely need some more practice with them! 🧡 I may need to try out the Caran d’Ache ones if they’re softer than I thought. And I’m glad you like my personality, I know I’m not for everyone too... 😆

I love oil pastels. I just love playing with them. Whimsical Girls is one of my fav. Jane books. It has really helped me practice drawing faces & learning to color faces too. It's a wonderful book. Great job using the pastels. Have you ever tried the Pan pastels? They are magic.TYFS
@KimballsCorner
@KimballsCorner 4 жыл бұрын
I haven't tried Pan Pastels... there are so many of them and they take up a lot of space.... but I have tried Jane's Palette Pastels, which I enjoy for details but not for creating entire pieces. I'm too impatient and don't want to use a fixative. I've seen people using the Pan Pastels though and it blows my mind how good they are!
@kimlivengood5916
@kimlivengood5916 4 жыл бұрын
@@KimballsCorner I know they make it look so easy. One of the pluses of Pan Pastels is they don't make a mess and don't get chalk all over. They get just a touch on top of the color but I almost never have to blow it off your art.They do take lots of space.nO hate that. I'm cramped already. Lol Hope you & you're are doing great.☺

What kind of digital software do you use? My husband got me Corel Painter 7 and I am trying so hard to like learning digital art but it is so hard.
@KimballsCorner

My favorite is photoshop but it can be very overwhelming because of the nearly unlimited options. I figured out a way of coloring that I really like to do and just stick with it... on occasion I’ll add new things here and there but I like steps I’ve created for myself. I also use procreate on the iPad. I really enjoy that, especially for inking images. I don’t know it as well as photoshop but it’s fun to play around in. They do updates so sometimes things change a little bit which is annoying for about 5 seconds but then you get over it! 😂 Digital art can be tricky to learn but once you figure out what works for you it can become very easy, quick and enjoyable!

@@KimballsCorner Thank you, Kimball! I don't know very much about Photoshop. My husband can do it. I'm one of those people that likes using art supplies, getting paint on my hands, using brushes...I have been resisting using the drawing board--it has different brushes and everything but for me it isn't the same. Have a wonderful day and stay safe!
