A quick look at steering our boat in close quarters by using only the shifters and throttles. Works perfect for docking or heading to the gas dock and I have found it much easier to control our Sea Ray Sundancer with this method, than when we had our inboard/outboard powered previous boats.
Filmed June + September, 2017.

I am new to our v-drive Sundancer 310 and am still practicing the concept of steering with the throttles. My mentor pointed out that the throttle and shift lever are bent on the end with ball which indicates which direction the bow or stern will travel if the lever is pulled back or pushed forward. It was helpful to me. I also learned to leave the steering centered while traveling in reverse whenever possible. Also to use the throttle in short bursts and use the shifters in and out of neutral rather than leaving them in gear, either forward or reverse as applicable. Thanks for your directions in all areas. I am now working on the duck bills with your help. Thank god I was a father and grandfather as I changed diapers and learned to duck as well as get used to the smells, sort of.

Inboards are much better if you know what to do. My first inboard was a Nimitz class carrier (#70) Now it's just a Correct Craft and a 28' twin screw 1980 Topaz. Nice work! BM3 Lynn, Master helmsman USN.

Yes, that would have been a great ship to practice docking with ;-) We had an opportunity to visit the USS Intrepid back in 1989, an Essex Class carrier (CV-11) that was/is berthed in New York City. Quite the impressive bit of technology, despite it's (now) 75 years age and I could only imagine the improvements moving forward to the Nimitz class vessel you served on.

During our training (masters designation from Transport Canada) this is the primary way for all slow speed/close quarters handling. Works just as well on our 32' I/O diesels. Keep up the great work Paul!!!!!

Because rudders require a flow of water over their surface that provides enough force to counteract the tendency of the vessel to track straight ahead (or backwards)...at slow speeds or running with a current the water flowing over the rudder surface may not develop enough force to control the vessel.

A good way to remember how to use your shift the controls is to place your right hand on the Starbord shifter on your left hand on the port shifter with your thumbs pointing at each other . For example when you place your Starbord shifter in forward and your port shifter in reverse the bow will swing to the left and the stern will swing to the right the exact directions that your thumbs appointing in. Putting your port shifter in forward and the Starbord shifter in reverse the bow swings to the right and the stern swings the left. You can actually walk your boat to the dock using just your shift the controls .

Great Video ! What is the difference though between the shifters and the throttles? Do they both not do the same thing ?
@BoatingWithBoogaboo
@BoatingWithBoogaboo 5 жыл бұрын
No. The shifters shift the transmissions between neutral, forward and reverse. The throttles increase or decrease engine speed.

Although I don't track fuel consumption, I'd guess it's around 1 mile per gallon. My general rule of thumb is when the #boat needs gas, I fill it up. The day I start worrying about what it costs to run/maintain our boat is the day I gotta get out of it ;-) Cheers and Happy New Year, Paul.

You may want to remake/correct the video. Your port and starboard are right but your right and left need a bit of work in the beginning. I like the video though. We lost our rudder on a yacht trip a while back on the inter coastal waterway in Florida and the captain used the engines to steer. I'm looking to buy and am weighing options between yacht types. Thanks for the video.

Do you think this method would work similar for the sterndrives if you centered them?
@BoatingWithBoogaboo
@BoatingWithBoogaboo 6 жыл бұрын
You'd think it should, but it doesn't. Boogaboo III was powered by twin I/O's and I was hoping that would be the case, but no luck. The difference is that the thrust from an inboard vessel is directed from farther forward and beneath the #boat, whereas the I/O setup is behind the boat. Inboards have a better pivot point for making turns. An I/O still requires input from the steering wheel. Make sense?

We have twin sterndrives on our boat and often manoeuvre it with just the engines, keeping the helm centred. It depends on the conditions, and on how close your engines are to the centre;one.
