In this project we will be using the 4G LTE Network and a Radar Human Presence sensor to create a new and modern alarm system. Due to the 4G Network and LTE-M you can send alarm notifications super fast to your phone, while it costs you pretty much nothing. Combine that with a precise radar and loud siren and you got yourself an awesome alarm system that will protect your treasures ;-) Let's get started!

The main issue i see with this is the power dependence.. If a thief cuts your power, this thing turns off. It might be worth it setting up a small UPS inside the case as well for power in the case the power is cut.

You can always have feature creep. This meets his needs for 99% of burglaries. You can protect against infinite scenarios. What if the burglar has a cellular jammer? Do we need backup 433mhz radio? What if they have a radar jammer? This can go on forever

A potential pitfall for the radar sensors is that they are happy to also detect 1.5m behind the wall! I use it for my smart mirror and it also detects the neighbours in their house which just happens to be behind the wall its on.

We actually tried that out and in our case the radar did not pick us up outside of the garage.

I have a stupid radar activated light in one room in my rented flat. It's hopeless, it often switches itself off while I'm still in the room and can occasionally switch on for no obvious reason.

@@will16320 It sees through walls and there is no visible PIR sensor, just cloudy white glass lamp shade fixed to ceiling. I think children running on the other side of the wall sometimes sets it off.

@@BrianG61UK Cloudy plastic is a dead giveaway there will be a PIR underneath.. google "danlers flush ceiling occupancy switch" as an e.g. and you should be seeing exactly what is in your spot lights

Cool idea maybe, if it was me I would try to incorporate backup battery integration, incase someone cut the wire or you have a power cut etc. Also those switches seem easy to get to? Apart from that great device and I enjoyed watching this.

Came here to say this. the obvious color of the box, and big labels on the on/off switch seems a little easy to disarm.

7:36 Just a warning, the way you blurred the map location you can easily figure out your exact location, by automatically comparing google maps to the blurred content. You should always use black boxes, or maybe colored pixel noise instead. I can tell it's google maps by the color scheme, and I can tell it's not just noise because the blurred UI elements are where I would expect them to be. But it could easily be done with some Javascript and some image processing.

Just a couple of small corrections: 1. The 2G/3G/4G coverage map is incorrect as some countries like Norway have shut down 3G completely (2G still exists as a fallback) 2. The program you showed is Visual Studio Code, which is significantly different from Visual Studio, the latter being much older

Also no battery backup in case of an power outage and also no sensor on the unit itself/tamper. Thats quite insecure :V

@@greatscottlab If it were me I'd keep the metal toggle switches as a decoy and have a nice big cap solderd to the body so anyone who doesn't know how to properly shut if off will get a good zap when the try the toggle switch. I think a NFC reader behind the front cover would be a neat stealth way of arming and disarming the unit. Also I presume that LTE board can receive data just as well as it can send data, It would be nice to be able to remotely arm the unit in case you forget when you leave or remotely disarm the unit for a friend if you happen to be out when they come by to borrow a tool.

Rig the switch so that trying to turn it off with the alarm sounding discharges a 4500 PSI air cylinder into some air horns.

As somebody who work myself for an international IoT/M2M telecom operator, we have a lot of customers having this kind of setup (although still with 2G.... so props for using LTE-M). I'd recommend to make some check on the device so that it's always connected to the cloud or that it can atleast ping it. Due to technical maintenance on the cells we send a "CancelLocation" event to disconnect the SIM and perform works and some devices think they still have a PDP session ongoing and keep trying to send MQTT payload and are stuck behind this loop where the operator already closed the PDP session but the device still sees it being open and uploads data without checking if it's acknowledged. Make sure to once in a while send some TCP type of packets and if they don't succeed then fully reboot the device or send the AT command AT+CFUN to reboot the whole module. It's best to fully reboot reboot the module rather than check if the PDP session is still open and try to reopen it. Also You might try to check the NB-IOT technology it's even more light weight incase you want to use it in an area where there's no electricity and you send data only when the module wakes up (coverage is even better than LTE-M) These are my two cents good luck and great video! :)

The Nordic Board looks interesting. I wanted to get into Bluetooth LE for a while now and Nordic also offers Bluetooth microcontrollers. Great to hear that you had a good experience with the LTE board. Maybe I will give them a try in the future :-).

Only thing its missing is a battery backup for when the power goes out, Altronix makes some great ac/dc power boards with battery backup that we use all the time in the alarm industry. Some of them even have a relay that can open or close if the battery goes low or dies

I did the same thing with a Particle IoT board. It's smaller, has built in backup-battery management and Particle workbench is very similar to Arduino. It's great for development because they come with OTA programming by default. I also have RP2040 Connect Boards and Adafruit's equivalent doing various reporting.

Nordic products are very capable but programming them can be challenging, especially if you do it using nRF Connect SDK which is built on top of Zephyr. Once an arduino port for this board comes out, like it has for other nordic boards, life will get a lot easier and you will see these being used a lot more in hobby projects and products alike.

I can agree that Zephyr (and therefore also NCS) can feel a little overwhelming at first, but from my own experience I can say, that once you get past the setup and get an understanding of how the DeviceTree and Driver configs/overlays work, the rest really becomes pretty simple and really efficient to work with (especially with the ton of samples they provide).

Cool little project. That radar sensor looks handy - wonder how it compares to the passive infrared human presence sensors? You could optimise the design slightly by using one of the integrated GSM/GPS ESP32 boards (eg by Lilygo).

Great video! As many have pointed out the flaws of the switch. I see an easy solution of running some wire in the shed to a secret spot that may be hard to see and mounting the switch there!

Awesome project!!! I want to give few hints regarding radar sensors: 1. you can buy those sensor based on different frequencies. Ensure that the choosen frequency is allowed in you region for your application. Having a wrong radar running might disturb other electronics near by... and at least in Germany you can get serious trouble if someone calls the autorities because you block a certain frequency band. 2. Be aware that radar might be disturbed by any metal. Facing this e.g. to the garage gate might cause some problems. 3. Be aware that the sensor might look through walls 🙂

the fact that you can power everything with 12v means you can get one of those 12v ups power supplys (commonly sold in LED shops). it is a regular 12v supply with additional leads for lead-acid battery. by this you can avoid being vulnerable to the theif taking down your power breaker because the system will resume from the lead-acid battery. you can use regular motorbike batteries that are smaller in size (about 7-9Ah)

Sorry - he's got an alarm with a cellular connection. The whole idea of an on/off switch is ridiculous. The alarm should always be powered but armed and disarmed from the phone via a code. Yep, more complicated but what modern alarm doesn't have code based security. I don't want to get too much into feature creep but that is a very low cost add on (a 4G receiver/transmitter rather than just a transmitter). And a small lithium ion battery backup. Easy and right down Great Scott's alley. I see an alarm 2 point zero coming.

Looks great! A suggestion would be to have the arm/disarm switching done with a keyed switch instead of a toggle switch to lessen the chances of someone disarming the system without permission.

Hi, Scott I need help. When I connect 60v DC to power mosfet/IGBT (+to drain -to source) it blows up transistor, the transistor not connected anywhere else. how is this possible? (used IRFP260, STGWT40HP65 and other models)

Great project and nicely done. I would have made one different decision. I can't tell from your video if you turned down the volume when the alarm was on, but it doesn't sound very loud or piercing. If not, I would have scrapped an old smoke alarm for its siren - they are loud, annoying, and would definitely cause intruders to not stick around. Additionally, that flashing alarm is awfully expensive if some of us out here wanted to recreate your project.

You should mount the alarm box in a safe all by itself. Run the wiring for the accessories (sensors, speakers, lights, cameras, microphones, etc.) Out of the bottom or out of the back of the safe. Secure the safe to the floor or the wall, if you can. A burglar could waste so much time on trying to take or to breach that safe. As they waste their time, notifications are being sent, photos, audio recordings, or video could be taken, and sent. Alarms could be making loud noises while strobe lights flash and disorent the intruder. So even if they smashed the speaker or the lights, they still wouldn't be able to stop the notifications or the audio/video recordings from being sent. Another option would be to mount the alarm box in some other location, still use a dummy safe that is either too heavy to move or bolted to the floor or wall, and mount all of the alarm accessories in the areas needed to protect your valuables.

I actually was gonna build a similar system in a very similar box for my scooter. With a gyroscope to detect movement, GPS, a few buzzers and a GSM module to send alert SMS. But I never got the GSM module to function, I think it was DOA.

How long until the µC stops working and needs a restart? With all of my long term (years) µC projects, they stop after maybe 3...6 months and need a restart. Irrigation, weather station, ... Just like the irrigation, you want the alarm system to function all the time without having to worry about this and without needing to check on the system all the time. Is there a solution to this problem?

Prior to concluding the video, I have a query regarding the 4G cellular service you referenced. According to you, transmitting the data would only entail a few bits and incur minimal charges. However, I am unaware of the specifics regarding the cellular boards you demonstrated and would like to inquire whether you are required to pay any setup or monthly service fees, similar to a regular cell phone plan.

What Arduino micro controller do you usually use? I use the nano every for most of my Arduino based projects because they can use a 12V power supply and you don’t need the use of a buck boost converter.

Long gone are the days when burglaries were rare and people didn't have to lock their front doors. Unfortunately we can't rely on not getting robbed, just by hiding all the valuables. What we CAN do, is alerting us and people around, while the burglars are still doing their thing. For such device, this is a great one!

Would it be possible to code in a soft switch? It occurs to me that if it's possible for the device to receive texts as well as send them, it wouldn't be hard to encode as soft switch. In such a set-up one could simply text "Arm" to arm the device and "Disarm" to disarm the device or any other number of key phases to work in place of the commonly used ones.

Hi, I have a question. What if I wanted to have a wireless energy source and using the planets in the sun at the actual energy source that you think the plan is as resistors and anything else that you need like you showed on on the wireless video what? How can I how can someone use the planets or whatever they made out of or whatever material Matias are, and using those to get a wireless dad, a wireless chargers or electricity if that made any sense if the question if that’s possible thank you.

great video. can i suggest that you make a system for remote door bell (Infra Red, 2 way audio, auto cycling of video data to cloud, notification upon detection of person in video), part 2, enable a remote lock/unlock system (for postman to securely put packages in a box, and remotely lock the box there after)

Did you compare the performance with a solid lid vs 3d printed? the non solid and non smooth 3d print is according to their datasheet not optimal for a radome - but I havent done any scientrific testing other than heatshrinking a sensor for testing which was not great.

For your next revision, you may want to try the AVR-IoT Cellular Mini board by Microchip. It's Tiny compared to the dev board you used here, and compatible with Feather format microcontrollers. So you can program it in Arduino or Circuit/MicroPython.

The box needs to be concealed and a keyboard pin code or something is needed to make it secure, also the siren needs to be wireless connected and some distance from the control box. Or, you could make a dummy box to distract the thief, with the real one concealed. I would also suggest a high brightness strobe alarm beacon so would be intruders are temporarily blinded to prevent them easily taking anything.

my only change would be instead of a switch on the side, clearly labeled on/off and arm, maybe have that be something you do with the phone that receives the alarm notification. otherwise, really nice project.

My main question about these cellular boards is how much you'd pay for say a year of service with the minimal amount of data (say 1MB). If that cost were less than $10 there are a number of interesting things you could do with a board like this (e.g. put one in your car to track it very cheaply).

Throw in a backup battery that should be essential in an alarm system, you already have the PCB for it and some X-Ion batteries. This way, you could cut the power supply cables of the garage and enter freely inside.

Here in Germany they can't shut down GSM that easily. A lot of stuff depends on GSM and it would be really expensive to replace everything. GSM is used in a lot of alarm systems or fire alarm base stations for larger buildings. Also a lot of older people still use older phones that won't work anymore then. I found out that on a certain point in the next village you still have 3G reception till today although it should be shut down. I don't know why that is the case, but it is a bit weird.

I had a similar system using a PIR sensor. It triggered an led floodlight along with the buzzer from a washing machine. However it kept scaring the locality dogs and cats and kept me awake and sleepless all night with the false alarms

i would remove the switchs on the side, add a pin pad, a battery, paint the box a color that matches the wall, make the sensor the brain and the sciren wireless, so i can hide the the "central", and a heart beat to monitor if everything is okay every seconds otherwise notify aswell but good video :) any plans for the green house ?

Couple of unknown aspects/suggestions: how do you "disarm" it ? Flipping a switch like you show is way too vulnerable for an alarm system (suggestion 1: at the very least, it should have a keypad to punch in a code). Suggestion 2: remote arming/disarming via the phone. Cheers

actually you could had used just a pir sensor facing the entrance. just by opening the door the change in detected ir is enough to trigger, it's damn cheap and it doesn't pick you if you are outside. great project tho. I would suggest moving outside to arm switch to a keyed switch whit tamper protection, outside, so you don't get blasted by the siren every time you open the door

Nice project! I wonder if this siren/led would really distract thiefs especially in a sparsely populated area. Maybe adding some really bright lights in and outside of the garade could draw more attention. Did you also think of adding a camera which makes snapshots in case of a burglary?

I think its a great idea. It would be also pretty easy to add a keypad for code entry. And also maybe integrate smart lightning etc to this same 'box' as well.

then you could just buy a lares 4.0, a Bentel, a Qolsysor a Visonic. Those are all great alarm unit with good home automation features such as Konnex, HTTP Gateway and relay expansion

My only concern is it looks like you installed it right next to the door with the buttons facing anyone entering. A thief could just hit the off button quick before any detection. Might make more sense to mount it on the backwall facing the door, and trigger a way to disarm it from a text before entering.

Well an awesome project, but there is one point thats really disturbing and thats the on / off switch on the side of the case. What if, in theory, a thief would make it into that garage without triggering the alarm, switches the whole system off and get the whole stuff out of there. As you are using an Arduino tho i think the best way to deactivate the system is a numpad with a special code or a fingerprintsensor or an RFID Card.

Great Project, couple things to address, but great overall! I would love to see you take a crack at making a DIY golf ball tracker. Those things sell for big $$$ but seem like they should be so easy to make.

I could see other sensors 'married' to this setup, such as door sensors, mercury bulb for motion of device, etc... Many possibilities. Mobile applications too.

Notice that the mosquitto test instance is not guaranteed to be available in any way - it's a test instance only. Also, Android phones love to shutdown or delay background services for battery saving. I wouldn't want to rely on an alarm set up like this. (Sorry for the negativity, but I've been working in IoT long enough)

random thought if you could add manual triggers run a wire to say your bike and use magnets around it as a switch so if the wire is removed without entering a code into the console the alarm activates this idea can be improved on but be a nice manual trigger for more expensive stuff could be used on the door also to just send an alert with option to call police when the door is opened
