Great methodes. but what if it is deeper than 5 or so inches? I've never seen the "slit" methode befor. I'll use it.

Good video Joey...still looking good after 4-years here on the "Tube" and a nice sequence of techniques as the video progresses...I am sure that it has improved many a hobbyist's recovery technique and in turn improved the standing of the hobby...regardless of some opinions out of left field.

Great demo for the probe, I only find fault with the 45 degree angle cut, when you do that you are cutting the roots of the grass which then kills the grass, best to dig straight down not at an angle.

I cut very small semi plug / crescent plug, just for the deeper targets, and use a pin pointer and a nice dirt catch like a small plastic pale or towel , these really help make this hobby cleaner.

I am one of those guys that that moves the hole around on golf greens. The grass there is very very short. When I cut a plug I have a special tool the makes a crisp clean cut 4 1/4 inches in diameter and about 8" deep. You can't even see the old hole after I'm done.

I like to use the surgeon method....When I find a valuable item (I’ve never found junk)I first dawn my mask,apron,gloves,and booties.Then carefully pick up my #4 scalpel and make a 2-3” incision into the sod(which is always moist and cuts like butter).Then I use my chest spreaders to hold the cavity open.Then I use my #7 hemostats and gently insert them until the item is located.After retrieving the object I carefully release the spreader and close the wound oops I mean sod and suture the opening back with a stitch ever .5-1” increments.When I’m done the wound dang it I mean sod will recover in 2-3 weeks with proper hydration and rest.I’m able to do 4-5 of these techniques a day!

Excellent video, I've read about the probing method and a specialty probes from Jimmy Sierra since 2005 which I've just learned what it's used for which is to be used instead of a screwdriver, lol, silly me.

These methods do work great depending on what region you dig in. Here in Texas the ground is very dry and often packed in parks, in essence, a shovel is required. All holes matter, leave it better than you found it. 🇺🇸

Awesome and important video! Thanks for posting! I've been around for a while and I am familiar with the probe method - but not slit method! Thanks for posting this. People need to pay attention to protect the hobby. But even then I try to stay out of parks and hunt other areas less sensitive.

metatech I got accused of being a troller on another popular site because I commented that the girl digging was creating a military fox hole to find a coin a few inches deep. I've been detecting since my dad got his 1st detector from Garrett in 1970. Yes, I have messed up a few holes but usually peace an area mostly undisturbed. These popular You tubers who use shovels are going to destroy the hobby for many of us.

Hmmm, some good suggestions. When I go out detecting I am always respectful of my surroundings. I dig in Seattle all the time and have never heard of anybody telling me that I can't dig.

The garret or any other probe or pro pointer is really handy if you're drilling into a wall and don't want to hit any hidden electric or other metal cables or pipes. My garret pro pojnter is maybe too sensitive and buzzes when you're about 8 inches away from metal.You can tell from the sound how near to metal it is though.

Hi there, great video. What model detector do you use? I have a detector but it's not suited toward coins and I would like to get a detector that is not too expensive, but can tell me the depth of the target so that I know how to dig it up. Do you have any reccomendations for a good value for money detector that could do this for me? Thanks

People using shovels are a huge problem. I often use the probe & forceps method. Find the coin with the probe, then go down with the forceps and carefully grab the coin.

I recommend the E-Trac by Minelab or the GTI 2500 by Garrett or Ace 250 by Garrett. The ACE 250 is a great value but the other 2 mentioned have better depth and discrimination and many more useful features.

I called our local park district here in Carson City and the head honcho said it was 'currently' ok to metal detect in our parks, but not at the "sports complexes". I'm assuming he meant not out in the actual soccer and baseball fields, which makes sense. It IS slowly going to be harder and harder to find places that you can legally hunt in. Damned shame!

Good video, I just started detecting and dig plugs. The screwdriver method looks useful for the shallow targets, 2 inches below.

The probe can be used down to about 4 inches. When you find the coin, leave the probe in place and use a knife to cut a slit on either side of the probe. Then, pop the coin out.

The USA must be about one of the few countries in the world where you can metal detect on a park. Here in the UK you cannot detect ANYWHERE except most beaches without obtaining permission first.

+zenoist2 In the city where I live you have to obtain a 'license' (or a permit) to metal detect on city property (parks and what not). There is a no digging rule.

+Andrew Lawlor It sounds better than a total ban. MY money has paid for these parks and roads and I always leave no holes or any obvious signs of digging. It seems bad I can't get what I have paid for but thats the UK for you , laws , rules and more laws.

ok.... I've watched about 4 different vid's w/ea of them not knowing a God damn thing about reality. This video is pretty good. The screw driver/probe method is pretty good. The opening up of the sod one? Well that seemed like a vagina to me and it made me go to Fuq. com ... I'm back now...... Personally I use 2 methods... My detector has a pin point function. Some do not. Anyways, I pin point fwd and side to side to isolate. Then I do one of two things. One I cut a hole as deep as what my detector tells me its at. Then I wiggle it enough to open it to get my hand held pin pointer in. If I get a tone/vibration I then either use a screwdriver to pop the target out or use a cut on ea side of the original cut to make a 1/2 circle . Then fold it open and isolate/remove the target. Then close the 1/2 flap and step on it. DONE.

Wouldn't it be less invasive to cut a clean, proper plug and return it the right way? Seems like this method rips the roots of the grass which may result in a dead spot.

The problem with a "clean and proper plug" is that they rarely ever end up being "clean and proper." It is very difficult to retrieve a target from a plug without breaking it apart, frequently tearing the roots apart, especially if the target is in the first couple inches of the plug. I have personally not cut more than a half dozen plugs in the past 5 years, and only then when I'm in a very old area where I am likely to find old silver coins. As responsible detectorists whose duty it is to protect our hobby, it is extremely important that we learn these non-destructive techniques of target retrieval when we are detecting in sensitive, manicured areas like old home lawns, parks, soccer fields and other similar areas.

Let's get real, I seen too many videos of guys demonstrate how to remove a object from the ground without destroying the turf, but you watch them in future vids, they don't keep up what they teach. Let's face it we all come across those very tough target from time to time. I'm not new to this hobby.

"we all come across those very tough target from time to time" Yes, but we now have the tools and methods so we don't have to massacre the ground! There are two additional points he does not mention. One is patience, which these methods require. Secondly, we should not be digging mine shafts to get to a target. Third, we need to know what we can and can not do in areas. In a sensitive area like the video poster apparently is in, I would not dig any plugs at all, and spend extra time using the detector to pinpoint the target. I know it is obvious, but I say it for the sake of others and the hobby, don't be hauling spades into the park. Perhaps just stay out of parks like I am doing these days!

parks need to water more, they run a large spiked wheel twice a year putting tousands of holes just so the grass will grow.

I dont think this will work in the parks in my area. About 1 in every 20 targets is worth anything. I would maybe recover 1 penny a day.

If everyone would Just fill your controlled Correctly preformed plugs. And put down a cloth in a park. We wouldn’t have such issues. My plugs come outs and I get my item with only a 4” plug, and when I’m done you could look and look and never knew where I plugged. Just too many people making giant holes and throwing their dirt everywhere.

No offence but, it would take forever to detect a park. If you cut a small plug and put it back correctly, there shouldn't be a problem. AND, I see people with cleats on playing football, baseball etc. tearing up fields everywhere! My point is, A PUBLIC PARK IS THERE FOR ENJOYMENT, that's why we pay taxes to maintain them! Parks shouldn't be places that are manicured to perfection so that people have to walk on egg-shells while trying to enjoy themselves! Sorry but, THE CITY BY-LAWS ARE WRONG!

then you have irresponsible messy plug diggers in your area cause whether I break my plug apart or not everyone goes back and it's undetectable by eye where I removed and replaced my plugs . it's all in the technique but to many have no respect which is what ruins it ... plus those people will not take the time for the methods shown here if they can't put a plug back and take the the time to do it right

Instead of the brass probe just use a cooking temperature guage which is aluminum.

I'm with the parks on this one. If detectorists used common sense and some class there wouldn't be a problem. And the more people that get involved the bigger the problem. So here's the rule: Go ahead and detect. If the object is on the surface it's yours. But NO DIGGING. Very good video, btw, but not in tune with reality.

If you're with the parks, maybe YOU are part of the problem. This person spent quite a bit of time creating and producing a video meant to help IMPROVE the sport of metal detecting by improving the techniques used to recover lost items. Maybe the public playing sports, which tear up parks more thoroughly than any one person digging a 3-inch hole with a small garden trowel, should be banned. Maybe animals that dig and leave 2-foot deep burrows and 3" deep hoof marks throughout the parks need to be carted off to the zoo, Maybe certain dog owners who allow their pets to defecate everywhere and leave feces everywhere should be fined then banned from all parks. If it is reality you crave, above all let's ban plastic bottles, beer and soda cans which are tossed from Lamborghinis by the lazy public, which I, and the rest of the metal detecting community, pick up and dispose of regularly during our perfectly legal hobby. Maybe if the general public used some common sense and had a molecule of class, metal detecting hobbyists would not have to wade through and have to clean up layers of plastic, metal and food garbage every day. No complaints about any of that though, right? You should spend a little more time in reality and maybe your opinion might have weight.

Sorry but I find it hard to take you seriously when you're not even using a pinpointer. And probing the ground with a brass ice pick? That's insanity. Also, the hell with the park managers and overinflated egotist city employees that want to control the minions. It's OUR property, not theirs. When I'm approached, I tell them that I've already dug thirty holes. Try to find just one of them. If you can, I'll leave. Otherwise, get away from me.
