Many people take the application of stains for granted. They just slap it on, wipe it off, and are satisfied with the look. But there is more!!
If you follow the directions, and perform the proper steps from sanding, surface preparation, product application, to finish, you will find that the results are far better than what you have achieved previously. And the information has always been there, RIGHT ON THE LABEL!
In this video I used Dark Walnut stain from Varathane, along with a pre-conditioner, and finally a gloss lacquer spray finish from Deft. I was able to get all of these products at my local Home Depot.
Thanks for watching Dad It Yourself!!!

In my Renovation of my upstairs, I needed to stain 200 feet of pine baseboard along with several pieces of casing. To match the existing trim I had to use Zar wood stain. My first test blotched. Using Minwax wood conditioner required it to be stained before it was completely dry. Long story short, I found a awesome product called Charles Neil Blotch Control. It’s alkyd based and doesn’t have a time limit for applying stain. Worth checking.

To be fair to you, I wasn't aware that there is "Walnut" and Curly Walnut" I've only recognised Curly. Now I see the difference I see I have a walnut TV cabinet as well as a Curly Walnut clock!! So, my apologies. You did a great job.

Not sure why everyone says this looks terrible. This is the closest I’ve seen someone take pine and make it look walnutish. I do think it has to do with the quality of lumber as well, buying wood without knots is key, but your process was really good as well.
@DadItYourselfDIY
@DadItYourselfDIY 10 ай бұрын
The prep and the use of the wood conditioner are what makes the difference. Using a clear pine is also key.

Make Walnut look like Pine?

Would it make the wood darker, perhaps more even, to use two coats of stain? Or will the wood only absorb the single coat? Thanks.
@DadItYourselfDIY
@DadItYourselfDIY 2 жыл бұрын
I've had good results with a second coat. It has to be within 2 hours or after 24 hours. Leaving it on longer before wiping also also can provide for a deeper color.

I'm not a pro but I do know pine limitations and basic cherry, walnut,golden oak look. This clearly isn't walnut. Just a dark brown stain

Hey question, would this work on the -fake- wood from IKEA or does it have to be real wood? I got two shelves that are reddish looking , and wanted them to look walnut color instead.
@DadItYourselfDIY
@DadItYourselfDIY Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure. Probably not. Stain soaks into the pores of the wood. If there is nothing to absorb or it's MDf, then it will just look mottled or sit on the surface.
