If you are using calculated shipping you have the option of offering the discounted rate or the retail rate. There is a setting under shipping preferences in your account where this can be changed. My setting was switched over automatically a few months ago so I switched it back to the original setting.

I believe it's because the u n considers China a developing country. So because of that they get a huge subsidized discount on shipping which is absolutely ridiculous

Just crazy that this is allowed yet again! If the services were on par, we would not complain BUT, when packages are damaged, lost, take forever and some never show up, there IS absolutely no justification for them to increase multiple times in one year!!! Explain to us why there ARE major delays and disappearing letters and packages in KENTUCKY, FLORIDA, CALIFORNIA, especially. Why does it take 14 days for a priority mail package to go from Boston to California! Why do you pay for Certified Mail BUT the package is not scanned and cannot be located when it is going to Kentucky???

Yea, so at this point, it'll be worth it to send ground advantage even if it's media mail because the package will not only cost the same but actually arrive sooner via ground mail rather than media.

Since the USPS can now set their own rates (no more PRC approval needed), that is exactly what they are trying to do. Get rid of Media Mail de facto. It will exist, by Federal law Media Mail has to be offered by the USPS, but they can basically price it out of existence.

GA is already much more expensive than First Class was and around what Priority Mail was when it was introduced… it’s becoming harder and harder to make profit on eBay between fee hikes and shipping hikes

I understand, you don't like it, but please don't miquote things just to try and support your hate of the feature. The math works for fulltime sellers who use it properly, if it doesn't work for you thats ok, its YOUR business, but the numbers dont lie

For book sellers, this is murder. Many of the really big book sellers, the one who ship hundreds of books at a time use 'bound printed matter' instead of media mail. That cuts their shipping cost 50% or more. In my opinion, it's postal fraud. On USPS, as I read it, bound printed matter is meant to be used for things like catalogs, financial reports, directories - think Sears Roebuck catalog and the financial statements you get every year from the company managing your 401K. And unless USPS cracks down on these sellers, it means they can sell a book for less than honest sellers can buy the postage. Trailer Trash Flips did an excellent video on this.

They CAN use BPM for books... but, more important than BPM, they have access to "Media Mail Presort" rates the vast majority of resellers cannot qualify for (just like BPM).

Technically BPM is not designed for regular books. As I understand it, one needs to apply for a business permit and has to be deposited at a special receiving area where the permit was issued. It's not supposed to be deposited at regular POs. Given the number of rules, the constantly changing of rules, and the education of so many counter workers I'm sure they ship out plenty of BPM parcels.

OH! This would explain how books can be sold for $3 or $4 with free shipping. It drives me crazy cuz I'll lose money. I have to list books higher and hope they sell anyway which sometimes they do. And sometimes I don't even list a book once I see what the comp listings are priced at.

@beeveedee9355 I think some of these huge book dealers are putting them up as loss leaders. If you have 1000s of books, how else do get rid of 30 or 40 copies of a common title from a best selling author when there are 3 pages of listings.

When Amazon dumped their contract with UPS in November, this was a likely outcome. I live in a town with NO postal delivery (post office boxes -pick up only), and the pile of Amazon packages is almost to the ceiling in my post office every day lately. The majority of these packages were delivered by UPS prior to Nov 2023. Those of you who live where Amazon has their own trucks or uses subcontractors for some of the deliveries probably just don't see the huge volume that switched to postal delivery. So I expect part of this fee is us helping subsidize prime free shipping via USPS. (I'd love to see what their shipping contract costs are).

So, I travel 12 minutes away to mail my packaged EVERY DAY to a different city, because my service is so bad they had to bring a postmaster general down to try to help. It did not. we goes days without mail pick up or delivery, scheduled deliveries not picked up. I don’t have a choice. Every once in a while I’ll test it. Put a package in, takes 2-3 to even post. Yep, still driving every day!

I feel your pain! I stopped getting daily pickup because I would go days without mail service. So I drive 15 miles one way into the only Post Office within a 40-mile radius. It's getting wild!

@@redcliffsclosetresale It is, about a year ago I put my packages out, no pick up, I called assured me they would come, they did not, so I did a scheduled pick up, they did not show. By this time I had 5 packages 2 days late and 6 packages one day late. I started calling and calling and finally went in and the postmaster there, gave me the postmaster general number, her actual phone number.. I had no idea when i called.. Her and I had a great conversation and she stated she was coming with a team…. It did do much…. We do get daily delivery, mostly junk mail. Pick ups come but sit at the branch for days before being processed. To save my business I had to travel to another town, which by the way is absolutely amazing. I put packages in the kiosk ANYTIME…and within an hour or so they are marked shipped. I love them! Really!

Two exact items will be bought for no other reason than one has free shipping. Like he eluded to in the video, Amazon has programmed our prime minds into thinking we need it. I used to charge 10 extra bucks for an 8 dollar shipping cost and my sales went up vs prepaid. Being a seller, almost forces you to at least dabble in human psyche studies.

I am using free shipping calculated to the most $ zone and add a note to buyers telling them to message and ask for a shipping discount based on their region. Messages help promote good buyer interaction which helps sales too, and is a way around the high prices for everyone

I switched to paid shipping on clothing and hardgoods the beginning of the year. In Nov / Dec I had several people saying they didn't realize it was free shipping when I countered ridiculous lowball offers. Absorbing 30-40% off a paid vs free shipping is a huge difference in profit margin. And I've not seen a slowdown on those sales. I think people are becoming more aware that shipping is not free and they're expecting to pay. I was a diehard free shipper, but I'm over it. Considering adding magazines and media to the paid shipping now as well. ...though I still don't think people realize mags are not media mail. That one may still be an uphill battle. LOLOL

As the prices keep going up more people are turning to ebay and other platforms to find deals as well. Unfortunately our prices have to go up as well, but it can still be cheaper than new items so there is a little light at the end of the tunnel

I just did a search online for these usps price increases. One result mentioned "possible" price increases for certain services and another result stated there would be no price increases for these services. The first result linked directly to an article on the usps website. It states that parcel select prices will increase on July 14 but there will be no changes to ground advantage or priority mail.

The only good thing that may come are customers making a purchase before the postal increases. But that's only if they are aware of it. I think it's just a small group like resellers and those who go to the post office often that knows about the increase.

I had been putting up my new book listings with a 99 cent fee for books under a certain dollar amount. Books going for $15 plus, I have been adding $3.99. I know the rate is $4.13, but I like it looking cheaper for shipping. Most dealers have been charging $4.13. I haven't seen any decrease in sales. I see a lot of comic dealers shipping things out illegally using Media Mail. Can't say I totally blame them.

It went up today on ebay. 1 lb 0 oz from CA to FL 8 Dls, 15 oz is 6.66 when it used to 6.16 to FL upto one lb now theyre cutting off at 15oz 😮

And they'll continue to offer crappier service! I just had to complain about my substitute driver. He basically refuses to take my packages, multiple times now he has taken my note off of my mailbox stating I have pickups at my front door, puts the note in my box & leaves WITHOUT taking my packages. I've complained in the past but they did NOTHING about it. I told them that I hate to complain but from this point forward I will complain every single time because this driver clearly doesn't care about the inconvenience, time, gas & possible late packages he's causing me, when I get home from work discovering his sorry butt didn't take my packages.

One reason the USPS is running in the red so much is they are the only agency I know of that is require to pay all their bills for the year at the start of the fiscal year. One top of that, they are being required to pay for more expensive unreliable equipment like the EVs mail trucks.

but you see if you make everything free shipping and when you make an ebay sale, lets say 40% off, the overall price gets drastically diminished on low end items-- so I found that its fine to charge shipping.... I tried free for years-- and see no difference in sales.... AND it decreases the rent-an outfit type buyers !!!!!

Pricing themselves right out of a job. The past increases are the reason volume, thus revenue, continue to fall. I currently use about 5 stamps per year. I say have at it.

The Post Office is really bad condition as an government service and its new strategy with shipping center is not working well. The shipping centers take longer to move mail along than it used to. Legacy costs for the post office are one of the real issues. Pension costs like a lot of government organizations is struggle with these costs that gave employees Lexus Quality Benefits for life.

Rates increase, meanwhile eBay virtually forced us to pass our discount shipping rates on to our customers to be competitive. And then other sellers undervalue items and list with free shipping forcing us to price competitively... There's just not going to be any margins left. And buyers are sending 50% off lowball offers. Maybe if we can hold on, other sellers will get discouraged and drop out, making the competition not as crowded... Not happy with the rate increases, but in all honesty, I do think my no. of sales increased when I opted in to offering the discount shipping rates to my customers. But now... 🤷

Appreciate your content and love it, but free shipping is not the same thing because it increases loss. Whenever a return comes through, if it's buyers remorse, you can withhold shipping. So for your example of 28 free shipping vs 19.99 + 7.99 shipping, if the buyer returns and you have free shipping, you refund the entire 28 dollars. If you charge shipping, you refund 19.99 and not the 7.99 for shipping, reducing loss.

@@RockstarFlipper @RockstarFlipper If you're doing any significant volume, we're talking hundreds to thousands of dollars a month. Not dimes. And I wouldn't assume that buyers are just too stupid to understand total price. Nobody cares if it's 19.99 shipping and a penny for the item if it's 10 dollars cheaper than the next listing. In my experience, free shipping is heavily dependent on category. You don't want to do it in a category like clothing, for example, but in auto parts you certainly want to. I think you're painting with a pretty big brush and just expecting your specific situation that works for you to apply to every business model.

@@RockstarFlipper Here's the math: Let's assume 3% returns on 1k items sold for a month. That's relatively modest numbers, but it's a round number and works easily to demonstrate. At 3% return rate, that's 30 items. Let's assume they were all 7.99 shipping (just assume $8 for sake of ease). That's $240/month you're spending just to MAYBE get some more sales. This is also assuming buyers are too stupid to buy a cheaper item with shipping included because they somehow flock to free shipping like a shiny object, which I'm mot convinced of for various reasons. Over the course of the year, if we're both in the same category, selling the same amount, listing the same amount; if everything else remains the same, at the end of the year, you've spent $2,880/additional in returns compared to me.

I learned a long time ago that it doesn't matter if prices go up if it's up for everyone. People will pay whatever the rate is if they want or need something bad enough. If they can't then the economy is shot and it won't matter what you try to do about it anyways. Just adjust your selling to what works best for you and don't worry about it.

The USPS gives China deals but they also give deals to Amazon. Amazon makes a ton of money yet they still get deep discounts. President Trump pointed this out last election. Furthermore, If you look at the top 20 E-Bay sellers there are several booksellers. These book sites have 300,000 to a million books listed. A majority of their books are $4-7.00 and with free shipping. Shipping for a two pound book is $4.93 I've read that High Volume sellers can negotiate their own post office prices. NOTE Regular Booksellers do not get E-Bay shipping discounts for Media Mail. We pay the same prices as people who walk up to the USPS counter. I do a lot of combined shipping deals. This is why I charge actual shipping and offer combined to free shipping for multiple book orders. As you mentioned, I have noticed that sometimes it is cheaper to use Advantage shipping. This has saved me a few dollars not to mention getting $100 insurance which media mail does not offer.

On Ebay we do free shipping have for years. I guess the item prices will get more expensive now. On etsy you have to spend 35.00 to get my free ship, that's my vintage store. I guess my book store is about to be screwed. I'll probably loose sales, in both of those stores. Ppl are going to look twice at our prices. Buy something for under 5.00 and pay 6 or 7 to ship, IDTS. We have had two items lost this year and the label was returned to us with a letter from usps. We opened a case since both were Ground advantage $100 insurance. We proved what the items were, value, photos, etc. We have never heard another thing other than the items were lost. While we appreciate the millions of items they deal with. The cost seems to have gone up for less service. SO we are at a loss for those items, eBay has changed to giving buyers the discounted rate although we opted out. In turn we get low ball offers and told our shipping is high. It is a vicious circle that never ends. We are doing our best to make a profit, much like all resellers.

I don't think it'll ever happen because the economy relies so heavily on shipping these days, and they're subsidizing rates with tax money and taking losses. A private company would absolutely have to make it a profitable business. They wouldn't be able to do the things USPS does. Although I agree that privatization is best long term, I don't see it ever actually happening because of this.

If something is purchased Saturday, overnight, because I work midnights, and I send out next day normally, wouldn't the postage be paid already, even if it's sent Monday morning? I work this weekend, so I wanted to make sure any purchases made before Monday morning were not going to ask for more money, after the purchases were already made. Thanks if you can clarify this.

i charge shipping but give 30 day free returns and its hasnt affected sales. I feel ppl know the "free" shipping has it baked into the prices and i feel that a lot of ppl dont care and still look at the item price. i feel ppl respect the "straightforwardness" of a price and a shipping rate. PLUS I feel youre WAY less likely to attract scammers when you charge shipping as they want ZERO "skin" in the game and an honest buyer has no proplem paying something they pay anyways. Also this way if i have a rare return, since i charged shipping, its a "wash" instead of now paying double shipping plus item $$. I am annoyed that icant make $1 on shipping to help pay for supplies, but displayng that i now "pass the savings on" to the buyer, is at least an "honest look" to the buyer. So all in all having transparency and honesty doesnt hurt.

This is directly related to all the resellers who have been ripping off the USPS with soft pack shipping and entering the empty poly mailer size (e.g. 9x12x1 for a 9x12 poly mailer) in eBay when eBay is not set up for this and paying .10 cubic rate for packages that should be .20 or .30 and I knew this was coming as a result.

The benefits some at the USPS receive is obscene. They shouldn't be making a penny more than those with similar jobs in the private sector. Most people don't get a pension, why should they?

@@RockstarFlipper And then you take the hit if it comes back - not only the shipping, but the ebay commission on that shipping. Especially now that buyers can return for "found a better price". At my ASP of $74, buyers remorse is rampant and they still try to make fraudulent claims - able to thwart 60-70% of those claims with a little clever messaging and a call to "customer support". Regardless whether selling common items or not so common items, buyers are getting flakier by the day. Fight every bad return and block them because customer loyalty represents a very small percentage of my or most sellers' customers. Been online reselling for 25 years....FWIW.

I literally never get them but rarely when I do….you will sacrifice how many hundreds or thousands of dollars in extra sales by doing free? Same argument with free returns. 10% discount can be hundreds on fees. Meanwhile people argue it to do it because of having to pay shipping labels on once in a blue moon label returns 🙄 Math works

@@RockstarFlipper I have 100 percent sell through. Do not give shipping discount. Make over 10k from shipping discount a year. I sell men's clothing and over 90 percent of items are sold without free shipping. Math works also if you know what you are doing.

@@RockstarFlipper While your content certainly has value and the expediency with which you get it out is largely beneficial to many sellers(including myself- hadn't heard the USPS rate change yet), you should keep in mind a few variables: 1. Most of the people consuming your content are not multiple 6 figure sellers(myself included). 2. The scale you may operate on is not necessarily the same as others - nor their level of ambition to grind volume for sake of low margins. 3. Not everyone is a clothing or smalls seller and costs for shipping, value/quality/scarcity of products is wildly variable. 4. I am not an enabler. If those abusing the system aren't held to account, they will continue to do it to others. I have an "ethical" obligation to ALL sellers to stop the abuses if possible. I'm not willing to take a $50 hit($25 shipping each way) on a $100 item 2-3 times a month, maybe get item back and call it cost of doing business. One model doesn't fit all

The sky isn't falling. All etailers face the same shipping problems. The difference is that the big ones (QVC, Amazon, Walmart, etc) negotiate rates that are 1/3 to 1/2 what we pay. We don't complain about that because we don't know exactly what they pay AND they operate on a completely different scale. I've been in retail since the 1980s and inflation has ALWAYS been a big scary thing - even when the economy in the Seattle area where we lived was booming. Actual statistics show that the US economy is doing extremely well right now, but one side is playing up perceived inflation because they have no platform to run on. I say you always have to work with challenges.

The terrible decline in service with many of the blue drop-off boxes being removed and cutbacks in the number of substations happened under Trump. Biden has moved toward removing the postmaster general DeJoy (appointed by Trump), but the rules for replacing this position have a complex time line and he's still in place.
