I live in a small rural town and the mail carriers all use their own vehicles and get paid so much per mile. A couple years ago, my local USPS location was forced to take a new Mercedes van (possibly a Sprinter?) but that thing had more problems and they were eventually able to get rid of that since nobody wanted to drive it over their own vehicle, plus it was ONLY 2 wheel drive so it totally sucked in the hills around here during winter.

Ironic, because over here ALL mail delivery services use MB Sprinters either the diesel or the EV version. Except for UPS (yes I know not the same as USPS) who use those ugly modified Peugeot vans, which are notoriously unreliable. Which is in no small part why UPS has a reputation of being unreliable and late here.

Now the mail will be really late, when the batteries run out of juice. How are evs working for the major manufacturers? We will need more coal fired plants to supply all the power needed.

@RockstarFlipper .. The way they all now park overnight right next to each other, the first time one battery catches fire it will destroy the entire fleet at that post office location.

Correction: I meant USPS already uses new vehicles they are similar to Amazon delivery vans. According to my mailman those are not new, those are rented vans, they also rent / use subcontractors for semi trucks. (during holidays they were renting u haul trucks)

Even if the vehicle only gets one hundred miles per charge , that's more than enough for any letter carrier in the United States Postal Service . The average route is about 30 miles and plus when the EPA tests a vehicle it is with the air conditioner running . So this vehicle should be good for the guys and gals , who deliver our stimulus checks and kitty litter through the rain , sleet and snow .

@@hc7679 The average route is miles and miles of rural driving. This might be great for them. The harder route is the constant stop start of urban delivery.

Well I think this is the best way for mailman at least get good and comfortable seats and AC the old car they are using now is hot inside no AC just stupid little fan. Who want it from all of us to drive with small fan rise your hand?! Ill tell you what NOONE. But mailman still do use small fan to get at least some air flow. I think this van is good looking and looks like tesla a little with that window up to the cilling. Im picking the van 100% for my mailman to get comfy enough.

Probably about the same amount if a gas powered delivery vehicle were to go up in flames . And think of how much more likely that would be , when you compare the likelihood and the combustible materials in each of the two vehicles .

The duck mobiles are made by Oshkosh. Probably much better quality than Canoe

Have you ever owned an Oshkosh or Canoo , because the Oshkosh seems to be a more practical setup , but the Canoo has been tested and proven reliable by our military .

There's a reason why the new ugly ones look like the way they do. There's a lot of requirements that are to be met that are more important than looks such as safety, fuel economy and functionality. It's not a Lamborghini. Not the whole fleet is electric but also have an ICE version in the same package.

Luv your comment , specialized vehicle are designed for a specific task . A Louisiana Catahoula will never win at Westminster , but if you cut him loose in the bayou . He can sniff out anything , run down or tree anything and even keep your home safe at night . The Louisiana Catahoula is a dog that is specialized for the people who can't afford a different dog for every task . We like it simple down here on the bayou , so "Laissez les bon temps rouler" , do what cha mailman and mail female . Much respect to y'all for doing what you do every day and especially since y'all deliver seven days a week , peace ✌️

Sure EVs cost a bundle, but so does ongoing repair for an aging fleet of gas guzzling vehicles. This seems like a smart business move. I'm not sure what all the doom and gloom is about renewable energy?

A total boondoggle that we as USPS customers absolutely cannot afford and will do nothing to change the weather or reduce dependency on foreign oil. Many of their LLVs still on the road are still perfectly serviceable and economic to maintain. Will these electric vehicles have the same long life and economy as their existing LLVs? No one knows.

I feel the better looking Canoo vans should be used more for larger USPS package deliveries and will be too big to make it a good replacement for the current daily letter vans. I have personally seen the Oshkosh, duck style EV's at the 2023 CES, and although they are really ugly, they are well designed to be very functional. The main thing that makes the Oshkosh superior to the Canoo for regular daily mail delivery is the low side window and sliding side door which I would imagine can remain open while driving just like the current letter vans making it easier to reach lower mail boxes and jumping quickly in and out of the van. My biggest concerns about the new duck vans are... they will surely be overpriced and delayed because they are being designed from the ground up and built by Oshkosh (a US defense manufacture in which DeJoy holds stock), and the underbody clearance is quite low and there are currently no plans to make a AWD model, making the duck van a poor choice for snowy climates. A 200 mile battery range should be able to handle 80+% of daily mail routes, and for those routes requiring more than 200 miles, there are still plans to make 25% of the Oshkosh vans with gas powered engines.

They can’t even find packages inside their own post offices, can’t handle simple tasks. How many electric vans will run out of power on the route because someone forgot to charge it the night before? USPS = three stooges university!

The vehicle can drive 200 miles per charge and a letter carrier drives about 30 miles per day , so the vehicle doesn't have to be charged every night , lol 😆

Not quite understanding the logic. The LLV's they had could have been upgraded(even just a redesign to base them on a modern pickup rather than a early 80's chevy pickup) to have better mileage and air conditioning. Some of them on the road are from the original fleet and have lasted 30+ years with mostly just routine maintenance. Electric vehicles batteries are their weak point, they will only last a finite amount of time, and when you have to replace them it will cost 10-30k. Most non commercial electrics have a life expectancy of 5-7 years with normal use before you have a major failure. I drove one of the LLV's in the late 90's and have to say they were brutal in summer heat with no a/c and just a fan. You can really see the disconnect within the government when airports and cities are getting rid of their electric fleets because of maintenance issues and cost. They don't communicate.

The van is listed for $33,000 and the fleet price is always less expensive . So where are the so called six figure numbers that this guy is talking about ? If you look at the fact that the Postal Service has been delivering in the present vehicles since 1987 , which means that they have kept them in service for 37 years . This purchase is a very intelligent if this vehicle can last for just 20 years . First off the Postal Service can phase out a lot of mechanical positions and save millions . They don't need the gas cards with these vehicles , savings again . Oh yeah brothers and sisters , they will be contributing to the world's climate change agenda . So to me it's all good , but hey y'all I'm just a brother from the "Lower 9th Ward" in New Orleans with a 12th grade education . Maybe one or two geniuses can explain why this is a bad move by the United States Postal Service . So with that said that's all I got on this subject , God bless America people , "Laissez les bon temps rouler" and I'm out 🎭
