80-years ago today, at 1400, on 1 May 1944, Lt. Cmdr. Marcel Blancq assumed the command of USS SLATER (DE-766). For the next 2-years, SLATER and her crew sailed thousands of miles across the Atlantic, Pacific, and Gulf of Mexico. After decommissioning in June 1946, the SLATER returned to service in 1951 and transferred to the Greek Navy, where she served with pride until 1991.
Following a 4-year restoration period in New York City, the SLATER was tugged north to Albany, NY where she remains today. In 1944, no one would have guessed this small ship would remain afloat and still servicing her country today.
This video montage is a tribute to Frank Slater, the WWII crew of the ship, her Greek crew, and the volunteers that have worked to restore the ship to her 1945 configuration.
