The History Guy: History Deserves to Be Remembered

2 жыл бұрын

Just months before the assassination of Franz Ferdinand would begin the July Crisis, a minor incident in the city of Tampico nearly sparked a war between the US and its southern neighbor. The incident represented the beginning of the active service of USS Texas to be a part of a diplomatic action against the dictatorial regime of Victoriano Huerta. The largely overlooked Tampico incident could have resulted in war, and did affect world politics for years to come.

Used to take my now adult kids (one at a time, of course) to the Texas on the back of the Honda every couple of years when they were young. Became sort of a tradition. On one of these, my son and I were two decks down when we came upon a tour group which had two tour guides. My son was asking me all sorts of questions about the area we were in, and one of the guides overheard him, broke off from the group, and asked my son and me if we'd like to see the lower decks. So we spent the next couple of hours climbing down step ladders, and stepping over various equipment being used to maintain the lower decks, eventually ending up in the emergency steering room deep down in the stern. My 30-something son and I still talk about it to this day. What a great thing for that guide to do.

I've lived on board with Cub Scout and Boy Scout camping trips twice during the early years of the current millennium. Her caretakers are negotiating to get her into drydock, sometime in 2022, for much needed hull repair.
@JarrodFrates
@JarrodFrates 2 жыл бұрын
@@michaelmoorrees3585 Here's hoping she makes it. A surprise leak in 2017 resulted in her taking on so much water she listed eight degrees to starboard before emergency response could correct it, pump out the water, and make temporary repairs. That happened after a 2012 leak that flooded her engine room and dropped the stern two feet overnight. Repairs took more than a month at the time and there was fear that they would lose her. After both incidents, experts said that new and even more severe leaks could appear at any time almost anywhere. Much of her hull is inaccessible because it lays on soft silt. She could literally be lost a few days from this comment should a new leak occur. Alternately, they could get her in drydock and find out that the damage is so severe that repairs would simply be too expensive.

I worked with a World War II Marine Vet and he told me about the USS Texas at Iwo Jima. The Texas, (as he fondly call the New York-class battleship) provide naval gunfire support during the Battles of Iwo Jima. He was so proud to look out on the horizon and knew she was there. He told me they had to call for support several times and he could see the ship fire and not hear the blast until later. Then the blast of the shell when it came in made the island shack like an earthquake.

Warren wrote great songs showing empathy for ordinary people struggling to survive, being pawns in someone else's game, or being buffeted by forces beyond their control, yet he had his own demons and had a reputation for not getting along with others. I miss his insights nonetheless. It is heartbreaking that he eventually got sober and seemed to be making peace with himself and his family, only to die of cancer at a relatively young age. Thank you, I found this very interesting. Oddly both sides of my family have connections to the Texas. My step grandfather served on her just before WW I as a cook. When my father in law passed we found a photo album. He had served in the South Pacific during WWII in the Navy as a store keeper and replenished ships as they came back. As I was looking through the album I came a cross a series of photos of what looked like an early battle ship. The clock range finder on the mast gave me a clue in might be the Texas. As the ship passed my father in law took a whole series of photos. The last one was of the stern and across it was "Texas." I don't know where he took the photos, but I suspect it might have been Subic Bay. I've always loved the battle ships. When I was in the Navy the ship I was on was in the yards in Bremerton, WA. The New Jersey pulled next to us as a cruse to Vietnam. It was good to see her alive and well. I also saw the Missouri in moth balls just a few miles up the road. Years later during Desert Storm I saw her again in Bahrain and bought a ball cap in the ships store.

My El Paso high school has a Civil War union cannon as a symbol of our school and chosen name, The Eastwood HS Troopers. That cannon is nicked named The Blue Whistler by union troops of it's day due to an odd quirk of producing a whistling sound when fired. The day before Pancho Villa launched a raid on the Mexican garrison in Juarez to further rebel goals in northern Mexico against President Huerta, Villa stole the Blue Whistler during the night from the El Paso downtown plaza. It had served as the focal point for old reenactments of civil war battle and would be fired to mark such occasions and others. The cannon sat next to an alligator pond in a shaded park where folks often collected each day to socialize. In the ensuing battle American citizens watched from low hills on the US side of the Rio Grande as the battle proceeded, using Whistler and a smaller German howitzer. The garrison was large and put under siege, but the key to winning was the garrison water supply, stored in a large tank. Pancho wanted the tank destroyed so that Huerta's troops and horses had no water under the hot summer sun and it was the Blue Whistler that struck the blows and won the siege. Then Villa proudly thanked the El Paso citizens for 'helping' with the 'loan' of the plaza cannon and marched it back into the plaza to much cheering. All in all, a great day. That day goes mostly unremembered now, but for those of us who love history, especially west Texas history we remember. El Paso is the oldest settlement area in the US, starting thousands of years ago with primitive men in caves as can be seen at Hueco Tanks States Park, then as a Pueblo area for hundreds of years, then as a more modern Indian tribal location, the Tigua tribe and then as a location for the calvary post, Ft Bliss. Today it's a major US city of about one million on the US side, facing Juarez on the Mexican side with over two million people. That is barely a reference to a city and area with more history than is easily believable. The battleship Texas is a tremendous thing to behold in person. Come see Texas. We Eastwood Troopers are proud of our namesake, just as Texans are very proud of our Alamo, Battleship Texas and more. Thank you THG for visiting us and supporting the Texas restoration of the greatest old battleship.

A couple of interesting facts. The Battleship Texas is one of the last ships in existence to serve in both World Wars, and it was the first battleship to launch an aircraft off of it.

I wish here in Britain we had preserved some of our historical war ships!
@TedBronson1918

There's a large sunken ammo/explosives ship in the heart of London from WW II. It's port used to be outside the city, but with post-war growth it's now in the middle of it. It was too dangerous to clean up/clear out. One mistake and KABLOOOEY ! It'd make the Beirut explosion look like a firecracker. The UK gov't is preserving that ship by keeping everyone well away from it. I don't think they even want 2 rubber rafts jostling each other above the wreck. They decided to just let it lay there and slowly rot/rust/dissolve away and hope for the best. IF someday you wake up to discover half of London has disappeared in a mysterious explosion and the Thames has a brand new bay, you'll know that the Germans got the last laugh in and it wasn't a terrorist attack. So they HAVE preserved a ship, but not for tours. I know this isn't quite the answer you wanted, but I thought you should know. I bet Parliament or the BBC haven't warned anyone in London they're living on a possible almost atomic size explosion that could be set off by the collapse of a rusty barrel or something else as simple.

You should assemble a playlist of all videos involving the USS Texas - there have been several, some of which she played a huge role in, others were historic events she merely witnessed, but there's certainly a theme of history through the eyes (or portholes) of that specific ship.

Speaking as a Scot, when we were taught about the US entry into the Great War, the Zimmerman telegrams were not given much importance, compared to the Kaiser's threat to re-start unrestricted U-Boat action. However, having seen the video, I realise that there should be a greater emphasis put on the Zimmerman telegrams.

Fun fact. Among the marines that landed to "seek redress" was ensign Willis Lee (later the adm that commanded US battleships at the second naval battle of Guadalcanal, and the fast battleships at the Philippine sea and Leyte Gulf) being a crack shot he set up a chair in the open and took out any sniper that fired on them.
