According to Yahoo Sports, Kirk Schulz, the President of Washington State University, clarified that the Pac-12 didn't intend to impede the recent adjustments to the College Football Playoff (CFP) format for the 2024 and 2025 seasons. Nevertheless, he voiced concern about potential format changes from 2026 onwards, particularly proposals from the Big Ten and SEC seeking multiple automatic qualifier spots for their conferences.
As a member of the CFP Board of Managers, which includes university presidents from each FBS conference and Notre Dame, Schulz echoed concerns about any conference securing guaranteed automatic berths beyond their champions, reflecting a common sentiment among his peers.
During a virtual meeting, CFP presidents unanimously approved transitioning from the previous 6+6 model to a 5+7 format for the next two seasons, adding an additional at-large spot while reducing automatic qualifying spots to five due to Pac-12 realignment.
Last month, Schulz postponed a vote to present a proposal aiming to maintain the Pac-12's revenue and voting rights privileges beyond 2025. However, the proposal received minimal support among fellow presidents.
Despite his reservations, Schulz supported the move to the 5+7 format. Nevertheless, he remains cautious about potential future adjustments. The impending meeting of the CFP Management Committee, tasked with resolving issues like revenue distribution, voting rights, and format, is crucial for finalizing a new television contract with ESPN.
Expectations are high for the SEC and Big Ten to seek increased revenue, authority, and access in the new model. Schulz highlighted a proposal from his commissioner suggesting a single league could secure four automatic qualifiers, a notion he believes might not resonate well with football fans.
Schulz advocates for greater involvement of presidents in decision-making processes, proposing more frequent calls to discuss CFP matters and broader collegiate athletics issues.
He anticipates the upcoming commissioners' meeting to generate pivotal ideas for the CFP's future and hopes these proposals will involve presidents early in the approval process.
Concerning the Pac-12, despite dwindling membership, it retains positions on both CFP governance groups. Each Pac-12 team will continue to receive its standard Power Five revenue distribution for the next two years. Schulz aims to keep the Pac-12 engaged amidst ongoing discussions about the conference's future, including potential restructuring or merging with the Mountain West.
“There’s a lot in flux right now,” Schulz observed. “It’s crucial for us to remain actively engaged in these conversations.”

It all depends on the number of members that the B1G and SEC end up with. If it’s 24 each, none of those teams that these guys are talking about will be available to the Big 12. More importantly, the Big12 will lose 3 or 4 teams as well. Do the math and look at the landscape.

@@jansonroberts2616True, but the idea that they would go over 20 teams is NIL. What remaining teams are worth $100M? If not, adding is DILUTIVE. Reason why both B1G/SEC hesitant to expand beyond ACC footprints. B1G already at 18, so that's 2 seats. SEC @ 16 so they could grab 4, but they are stingy on expansion. Most see them grabbing 2. So if B1G grabs ND, that's 1 from ACC (FSU). If SEC grabs 2 (Clemson, UNC). Leaves Miami up for grabs.

Clemson isn't going B12 unless big10 or SEC says no. Pay isn't that much different than the ACC. Only way they would end up big 12 would be an extreme failure of the athletic director at Clemson to land in a better conference once the ACC dissolves

Will have to see what happens with the ACC and what schools the SEC and BIG10 will take. Another issue is how much money will ESPN/Fox Sports will provide the Big 12 take some of those programs. If the ACC goes away I would think VT, Pitt, NCSU, and Louisville would fit the Big 12. I know Miami wants the BIG10 or SEC, but they play in a empty stadium and never won the ACC and the last time they mattered was when they were in the Big East.

Winning doesn't matter here. The question isn't if Miami is good enough to play in the sec or big10. The question is if adding the Miami media to the sec network or to the big10 network brings in enough money each year.

Utah, even if they were to win a couple of natties would not be a Clemson. Utah was a G5 just not too long ago where Clemson was not. Utah has never won a football natty, Clemson won a natty in the 80s. Utah doesn't even have as many wins the last 5 years as Oklahoma State, utah hasn't even won a new years 6 games. Utah is a wannabe program, they have a couple of conference championships from a conference that is no more. Utah is little leaguers

The question going forward is whether the Big 10 and SEC will want to just keep expanding with good brands or will they get greedy and start to figure out ways to get rid of some of their weak sisters that don't carry their weight. If they want to keep those sure W's we could end up with 2 or 3 very large conferences.

The conference bylaws would require a big majority of the other SEC members to vote any single school out of the SEC. The SEC schools would never do that. I would think the B1G would be identical on all that. No SEC or B1G member majorities with vote out a Vandy or Northwestern. Just too much competitive history.
