Muscle Car Of The Week Video #39: 1967 Camaro Z/28 Video
/ musclecaroftheweek - The '67 Camaro Z/28 is one of the most sought-after Camaros, having been designed to bring the Camaro into the competitive world of Trans Am racing. The Mustang and Barracuda had a couple years lead time on the Camaro, but the potent 302-powered pony car came out of the gate running. This one from the Brothers Collection is a pristine example of an original Z/28 that has been upfitted with some period correct speed parts including the rare cross-ram intake manifold. Too cool.

Another awesome car from the Brother's collection. That thing smoked like the rings are washed out of it or the motor itself is extremely tired.

From letting it sit, starting it dry for just a bit then shutting it off. Great way to wreck an engine and flatten a cam too

if your dad has an original '68Z, only the rear stripe, right side, will have the cut for the "C", emblem will read "Camaro" and underneath will read "by Chevrolet". '67Zs had the cut front and rear. emblem will read "Chevrolet" and underneath "Camaro", a different emblem. take no one's word on this stuff, do your own research. no expert here, just experienced. the cut on the one in this video appears a bit much with too many letters in the cut from the angle I see.

Beautiful car. It’s surprising that there was no factory tachometer and no factory gauges on this Z/28.

I totally missed this era as a driver but have always been a watcher. I admired these cars from the backseat with my face pressed against the glass as we pulled up to something like this at a stop light. I fortunately was old enough to finally participate in the mid 70s when hotrodding was still strong with used musclecars still plentiful and cheap as I made my first purchase of a 69 383 ply roadrunner.

The 68 had the Z/28 emblem the 67 had just 302 on the front fender.I only saw one 67 it was in Bethesda Md. I had a 69 for 6 months it was stole and the shell was found 31 days later. Bought a Pontiac Custom S wanted better than 8 mpg city and 11 on open road. The Dealer I got mine at said mine was the first that wasn't going to the track.

Yep, rings are shot, i was told by an old family friend that bought one new in 67 and it came with headers in the trunk, nos rebuilds have shown about 360-365hp and 350tq on the dyno with headers which is really good, im a fan of the small journal 302's of 67, very rare

This one had valve seals that were a bit dry from sitting, hence the smoke.
@derekstewart8175
@derekstewart8175 6 жыл бұрын
You mean the rubber valve guide seals got hard from old age? I design and build custom and original muscle car engines for a living and in my experience when it smokes all the time under acceleration it's 98% of the time it's a problem with the rings, if it just smokes on start up it's valve guide seal or bad guides, there is really no reason that 302 should be burning that much oil, period

These engines were NOT setup for the quarter mile. They were road racing cars. Power dosen't really kick in until after 4000 rpm s. Not sure the difference would be with the off road cam..Jerry MacNeish 67 302 z28 is setup for the quarter mile, I think he broke the "D" stock bracket at 10.5 seconds around..
@kensalazar5066
@kensalazar5066 5 жыл бұрын
@port nut not sure what you mean by x2 or up to 3? Be clear they were not set up as quarter mile cars. But with some adjustments they could be. Check out Jerry MacNeish 67 302 running lows 10s here on the you tube. They made huge power after 4500 RPMs. If the crossram ram is not set up correctly, and many are not then they dont run well. A lot of crossram s were discarded for this reason. There is a tremendous amount of changes when installing the crossram, from the cam n valve springs to even the gas pedal. It's not a quarter mile car. ..

I had a chance to buy one around 1979-1980 . I checked it out in regard to the VIN (not an easy task back in the days before the internet) and it was legit. The guy wanted $10,000. I was newly married and a house and baby were on the way so I couldn't swing it. I love my daughter, but, but, but, God I wish I had bought that car. I ended up buying an SS 350 convertible . Nice, but not the same.

In 1976 I was buying cars for the chev dealership.. i bought a 1970 corvette that was perfect coupe. 4 speed 350 v8 350 h.p..16k miles .. and paid 3600 to the owner.. we would take in nice muscle cars for around $1500.and price them at $2300.. used muscle cars back then were very easy to find....

For all those saying the rings are shot, it was common to de-tension the the rings to reduce the friction and add a few ponies in race cars, The side effect of that is changing plugs a lot and a little smoke. You really think someone spent almost 200k on a car and left out a ring job? Back in the day there was not many racing part around and a couple of HP could be the difference between 1st and 2nd.

@WoodedAcres
@WoodedAcres 4 жыл бұрын
It doesn't have to be a ring issue. It could be valve seals and yes someone could have put a lot of money into a car and the rings or valve seals could be bad. Why? Poor machining or.....more likely.......the owner has put some time on that motor and perhaps for authenticity reasons has shied away from doing a rebuild.

If set up properly with the off road racing cam and crossram setup, neither which were available from the factory, but as an over the counter "heavy duty " GM equipment. 465+ actual HP, the standard version 302 pushed out about 402 with headers .

Yes. 'MO' code on 302 was offered 1967 & 1968. 'DZ' only for 1969 302, all conforming to SCCA 305ci max displacement rules. Race form filled the additional displacement with increased bore and stroke.

Do this car a favor and rebuild the engine before it scatters!! No it wont devalue it I see guys on forums post this which is complete BS. NObody cares if its std or 30 over. Love the original look of the car. No fake Rs package, cowl hood, flowmasters, just stock. Great looking car....100 times better than the retro one these days looks like a bloated truck in comparison. Periodically starting the engine running it for a bit and shutting it off will destroy an engine and even flatten the cam over time. Either dont start it at all or drive it for a good 30 min. Drilled in my head by none other than Bob Lambeck. THink he would know better than most.

a little more info... the pulleys are large to reduce rpm, and temp gauge for oil is there for similar reasons. This engine could climb to 11000 rpm, there was no oil in the day to keep up. the smoke is from the ramp of how fast it pumps ..and no lifters to accept the squish, oil flies right on by the solids. The last engine to be this crazy in manufacturing came from japan... little boxer engines for 1 year only, in 1987.

I know this is an old video but.. Shift when the tach needle is straight up? Thats like 3 grand. I don't think I ever shifted my daily driven DZ below 5,000 and it had a hydraulic cam.. Maybe you meant straight down at 9,000 rpm with some really good valve springs...
