When you make it I will take you to lunch at the Shamrock Hotel in the historic gold mining town of Bendigo, a City that in 1900 was larger than Melbourne, at a time when the goldfields of Ballarat and Bendigo made Melbourne the richest City in the World. The native inhabitants had no use for gold so massive nuggets were just lying on the ground. I turned 21 in Bendigo in 1958, when the ANZ Bank sent me to work in the Bank on the opposite corner to the Shamrock Hotel. It was still like the Old West and behind my Tellers Box was a massive set of scales, with solid weights, about 4 foot tall that I had to use to weigh the nuggets of gold that I bought from the miners, because they had to sell the gold to the Government. Underneath my Teller's Counter I had a massive .442 Webley RIC revolver, the same as Colonel Custer famously wore at the Battle of The Little Big Horn. At least once a week the Manager and I used to take surplus cash to the Commonwealth Bank, so that it could be sent to Melbourne on the steam train. While I had to stick the massive revolver into the top of my trousers, the Manager wore an ancient leather holster on his hip, that he tied down to his leg with a leather thong. The RIC stands for Royal Irish Constabulory and the Bank bought them when notorious Bushrangers, including the notorious Ned Kelly, were robbing stagecoaches. one of Ned Kelly's descendants is a neighbour, and my wife's family are a whole tribe of Kelly's. My girls grandparents, on their red headed Mother's side, are named Kelly, Ryan, O'Callaghan and Hanrahan. My grandmother and my greatgrandmother both migrated from Ireland when they were in their teens, then got married to locals. That was very common because there was a great lack of females in the Goldfields and a lot of very, very, rich batchelors. Google the Shamrock Hotel and read its history from the late 1800s when famous ladies would sail half way around the World because the Gold Miners paid a fortune to see them. As an afterthought, when Clint Eastwood played "Dirty Harry", his gun was a ".442 Magnum. The most powerful handgun in the World ------ feeling lucky punk ??" Phil.
