In note 3 of the Supplement section of her Basic Principles of Classical Ballet, Agrippina Vaganova writes:
"In order to preserve all our achievements for posterity it is necessary to resort to the aid of the motion picture, which will be a great contribution to the immortalization of our art. The years are passing by, and we hope that our achievements, registered on film, will aid future generations to learn and perfect themselves.
In the not too distant future our first experience in this field will be shown to a wide public: pictures of the methodology of classical ballet at the Moscow and Leningrad Ballet Schools. This film will be a scientific aid in outlying districts as well."
This is that film.

Our teacher Vladimir Tsukano was a student of Mr. Tarasov, who created with Mrs. Vaganova this video. A timeless treasure for our students and future generations.

This is fabulous for the inclusion of Asaf Messerer, the man who single-handedly began choreographing much more athletic parts for men, who from that point-at the Bolshoi-was constantly innovating for both men and women, including the famous move in “Manon,” when Sylvie Guillem jumps in her partner’s arms and does a double turn with her whole body in the air. I saw this recently in a Soviet film showing dancers from the Bolshoi entertaining wounded soldiers during World War II. He was an uncle of Maya Plisetskaya who, with his sister Sulamith, worked with her until she was admitted to the Bolshoi school, and later he trained the top dancers of the company, including his niece! I’ve no idea why he’s included here, because I thought he was only associated with the Bolshoi.

Rather than a Kirov- or Bolshoi-specific scenario, this film is more of a showcase of the State's cultural method, applied across all schools via both Leningrad and Moscow, so Messerer isn't a Bolshoi outlier here. (You probably already know all this, but I'm writing for other viewers...) Nikolai Tarasov, who collaborated with Vaganova on this film, graduated from the Moscow school, was a Bolshoi dancer and later director of/teacher at the school. Lepeshinskaya, Fayer, and Rafailova were also Bolshoi associated. Kamkova and Tyuntina were students of Vaganova herself, and both were later teachers at the Leningrad school.

I'm puzzled. My Russian is not good, but I can read the nanme of Messerer in the credits of the film, and Messerer's version of Vaganova is not the St Petersburg version but that of Moscow, hte Bolshoi style-- and his niece, the great Maya Plisetskaya was one of its great exemplars and quite different from the Kirov/Maryinsky ballerina. There are many many nuances of difference, and much cross-over, ever since Semyonova [Vaganova's firtws great "product" -- I mean that in the nicest possible way, the beneficiary of Vaganova's understanding of co-ordination and how to build on a foundation]] became a Bolshoi ballerina-- and then Ulanova, also schooled in Leningrad, also became the luminary of the Bolshoi. I'll just mention the difference between the Bolshoi "tulip" hands, with extended fingers, and the Franco-Russian hands of the Vaganova style, wherein the fingers gently curve inwards. Perhaps that's more a difference of style than technique. Where does his class fall on the spectrum of the developing Soviet style?

I think of Messerer as a bridge that allowed Russian ballet to establish its own living voice, not completely cut off from tradition but not weighed down by it-purity in style but with a strong leaning toward naturalness and realism. Messerer explains in his book that in addition to studying Vaganova's book (as well as the methods of some 14 others), he actually traveled to Leningrad fairly early in his teaching career (mid-1920s?) to observe how she taught class and to glean as much wisdom from her as possible. Messerer was a voracious learner and observer and did this with practically every other great teacher and even STUDENTS of other great teachers. So certainly there's a continuity and coherence, the local/temporal stylistic differences notwithstanding. In any case Plisetskaya herself said, "What Vaganova did for the women's classes Messerer did for the men's classes, teaching faultlessly, precisely, always with the highest professionalism, the classical dance." That's no small thing!

She looks a bit like Irina Kolpakova, and she would have been 12 at that time, so maybe. I know this film was made with cooperation between Leningrad and Moscow schools, so students of both schools are in it.
