Sarajevo, YUGOSLAVIA - 1984 Winter Games, Figure Skating, Pairs' Long Program - Elena Valova and Oleg Vasiliev of the Soviet Union skated a strong program to win the Gold Medal here. Includes a profile on the pair. For those who are too young to remember, St, Petersburg was renamed Leningrad after the Communist took over the Russian republics and became the Soviet Union. After the fall of the Soviet Union, cities that had a name change during the Communist era were reverted back to their original names.

Their skating deserved so much better music. Love their speed across the ice.

Они двигаются очень быстро. Современные фигуристы все медленне катаются.

Their LP was only marginal and I would have given the Gold to the Carruthers for their skate of a lifetime!

The Carruthers are definitely not an Olympic Gold medal calibre pair. This team even not at their absolute best is better. Remember the Carruthers barely even won the silver, many judges had them 3rd or 4th. And had all the teams skated their best at these Games they would have been something like 5th, they only won silver since the favorites like Baess & Theirbach and Underhill & Martini underperformed.

@@tumicduguar2583 Unfortunately it is true, had B-T and U-M skated cleanly in both programs - the Carruthers would have been 4th at best. The judges were never inspired to put them on the podium. Heck even a subpar and second rate Selezneva-Makarov were rated higher by some judges because they were Soviets and the Soviets wanted 2 podium spots this year. The Carruthers' issue was a lack of sbs jump difficulty - their program included 2 Sal, 2 F, 2 TL, and 1 A - the lowest of any of the top pairs - Coach Ludington should have insisted on at least a 2 Lz and 2 Lo somewhere in their program as well and a two jump combo.

those marks were overrated…..really makes you think the scoring system was rigged or contrived, even bought

It's back in the days of scoring by reputation and from which country you represent. Soviet Union had been a powerhouse in Pairs since 1964, winning every gold, so when V&V enter 1984 as the reigning World Champions, they already had 2 advantages in their favor: being from the Soviet Union and being World Champions.

Yes, it is :) At the beginning of the program, from steps we can see side by side TRIPLE toe loop (not a double as Dick Button said:)

Beautiful triple toeloops, and uncredible comment of Dick Button - DOUBLE toeloops!
@nondescriptnyc
@nondescriptnyc 14 жыл бұрын
@indiatree Those were triples. Her step out on SBS 2A wasn't considered a major error because there were only a few pairs even attempting them. The Curruthers (and Martini/Underhill) didn't really have any substantive SBS moves, which was their weakness.

P.S. a testament to their technical proficiency is the fact that Dick called their SBS triple toe loops as doubles. Perfect, fast triples often appear as doubles.

I’d say he just called it wrong! Plain and simple.

Dick Button got Tamara Moskvina's partner wrong. Igor Moskvin was her coach and husband. Moskvina's pairs partners were Alexander Gavrilov and famous coach Alexei Mishin.

I never understood Dicks use of the word conservative. He used it a lot throughout the years. He said their throw double axel was a conservative one. Won't a conservative one been a single axel? I can't remember who or what program it was, but once we referred to someone's prefect jump as "perfect, neat and conservative." ...and if he did use that word it was always referring to something as the "wildcard" 😉
@3Axel1996
@3Axel1996 7 жыл бұрын
Conservative in that there was just enough effort, height and distance in the throw to land the 2A. I'm sure he wanted to see more power, height, speed and distance in the throw.

How did this parking lot of a performance win? Oh right - eastern bloc judging. BTW, neither Russians nor Soviets invented ballet - though they'd leave you to believe otherwise.

+Elaine Snow это было тридцать лет назад -- вам такие программы тогда и не снились .О, да балет изобрели не советы, но это русская балетная культурная традиция, уходящая корнями во французскую культуру. ROTFL!

You have to understand, this was 36 years ago. This is how a sport evolves. Watch the 1980 Olympics, when pairs only did six elements, no twists or throws, in the technical program, and you’ll understand why the 1984 Olympic medalists blew them away, and the 1988 Olympic medalists blew the 1984 winners away, etc. etc. etc.
