For me, the things that define good customer service are 1. Deep knowledge of products, enough to answer any question. 2. Patience to both answer all questions the customer asks and also if they're a bit belligerent. 3. Being nice and polite, as well as genuine understanding/concern for any issue customer has.

I'm a former Amazon customer service rep...and we (well...amazon) 100% can afford to send out complete replacements for almost whatever (although the more costly items needed higher authority approval). People go crazy happy when you say you'll replace a lost or broken item, for obvious reasons and to the point where there is also a separate department for "concession abusers" who try to gain the system. There must be hundreds of thousands of stories like the playstation 4 one...but they've been forgotten, or never brought to light in the first place. :)

While working at a car rental company, I had a customer who reserved an SUV for his family trip and when they arrived they had way too much luggage and the client also only drives domestic vehicles no imports, so I took him and his family to their hotel while we collected an Escalade for his trip from another location and delivered it to his hotel, he was so happy that we did that for him that he told his company to rent exclusively from us only. Little details like that can make a big difference.

Great story! Customer service really makes a difference. The executive chef at Disneyland who went above and beyond for the family, especially for the autistic son, is truly inspiring. The story about Lego is also heartwarming. It shows that even a small act of kindness can have a big impact on someone's life. Keep sharing these stories, it's important to spread positivity and show the impact of good customer service.

It's good to see people taking their 'job' and making it a profession. 'I just carry bags to peoples' rooms' - learn more languages, learn about where you work and live and interact with your customers offering tips, places to go or not go, traffic, events, etc. 'I work on a production line' - learn about the machine, work in different parts of the line and learn more - can you do it better without eliminating workers?

I always make sure I contact management or corporate office when I get someone who goes above & beyond. I used to work in customer service for years & CSM... it's so much better to go the extra mile. It makes you feel good, the customer feel good & I was lucky to be loved by the big bosses so I was allowed to have the head store management decision making & codes to make whatever happened, happen. I love it & miss it. Customer service is key to success, period! I had to stop working for a while & would like to be able to do customer service from home, but not sure what company to go through. Amazon is odd with theirs, and I'm not bilingual. If anyone has anything (no get-rich-quick pyramid scheme businesses) or knows of ideas of companies to look into, I'd greatly appreciate it. I miss having a purpose. It always lifted my spirits to work with people, making things right & then them coming back, wanting to only speak to me. I had two events where people wanted me to walk with them & help them shop, offering to pay extra for me to do it. But, it was not allowed ☹️ although, it was quite the compliment! In a more men's world large store, and they were asking for me, a female, by name. Any ideas are welcome. Thank you in advance 😊

I worked in retail management for 3 years. 1 employer sold car audio along with other technologies. Visiting 1 store I was asked if I was headed west to a remote store. I asked why & was told 35 car DVD / CD players needed to be sent there as customers were waiting for them. I collected the boxes & drove 2 hours to get to the store. I was greeted with cheers & claps as I walked in with these boxes stacked up high. The thanks I received from the staff & manager was only further supported by the customers handing over cash & cards. The Manager was shocked I would go this far to support the customers but those customers paid my salary.

These are excellent examples. Now and then I will work a booth at a local trade show. There is a MASSIVE difference in customer retention between the vendors who pinch every penny and the ones who go out of their way to help customers. I may forget someone who doesn't give me a deal, but I sure won't come back to a person who both inflates their prices and won't haggle on them. I will ALWAYS come back to a person who is helpful and gives me a deal without me even asking. I do the same, and my customers love me.

I would have missed my flight yesterday and likely would have missed the connecting flight and been in a tight spot if not for Bonnie who got me out of the line at Air Canada at YVR (Vancouver airport), and really saved my bacon... Really impressed me to see a total stranger who went out of her way to help me when I was about to freak out.

They say that if you provide great service to a customer, that they will tell 2-3 people on average about their experience. But if you give exceptional bad service, they will tell 10 people how awful the service is. Your organization is only as strong as its weakest link, and if that person is on the frontline with your customers, you will lose that war in the battle for their dollars. Remember, the customer isn't always right, but they are still the customer and foot the bill for everything that you do. You could have a whole channel dedicated to customer service, and never run out of topics to discuss. It can take over 20 years to gain a life-long customer, and less than 20 seconds to lose one.

THE TROUBLE is that people like to Abuse their Customer Privileges, often spoiled by for example Amazon Returns policies , etc, they like to Buy something, wear it or use it for a month, and than return it dirty..Or buy a Karaoke Machine to use for Weekend or Birthday Party and return it week later ..The Item no longer can be sold as new, The Seller looses money on that item, and postage both ways, and sometimes goes out of business ...Entire Airliners go out of business only because people Hustle them out of money only to get as much free shit and refunds as possible..

There's a story about a mining company that bought a Toyota Tundra and they used that truck over capacity all the time. They blew out the differential and sent the truck back for a warranty repair. Once it was repaired, it was sent back and they put the truck back to work. Well, they broke the differential again. They sent it in again, and it came back repaired. After the third time of this company breaking this truck, they asked "At what point are you going to finally tell me that its not covered". The rep tells him "Oh, don't worry about that. Keep sending us your truck. We keep making changes and improvements to your truck everytime you bring it in so we can learn to build a better vehicle". Toyota operates on the principle called Jidoka. When they discover a problem they will work backwards to find the failure and fix it and make those changes with all future rollouts. That is why they are so reliable.

I'm currently experiencing some poor customer service and it's doubly annoying to me because in my working life I always put huge importance on it. A lot of these type's of videos can seem "false" or "contrived" and focus on promoting good customer service for essentially the wrong reason's, or certainly not the most important reasons. This one is pretty much spot on. Really good customer service should come, not from a willingness to do something well, but from a need to to it well. As foreign as it sounds, it should be bordering on a selfish act. If you're the type of person that gets joy from other peoples happiness and satisfaction, if that makes you feel good, then you'll almost always have good service skills. If on the other hand you are doing it because you've been told to or because it's company policy or something similar then it will come across quite often as being false and contrived and people will quickly pick up on this. I'm not saying that anyone will be 100% on their game a 100% of the time but I would say that REALLY good customer service is a character trait or talent more than a learnt ability and is very hard, if not impossible to instill in people without it coming across as "forced". In short if you WANT to please people, if you get GENUINE enjoyment in making others feel loved and satisfied, then you're 99% of the way there. Maybe I'm being too black or white but I believe you've either got it or you haven't.

Totally agree with you Patrick, at work I always strive to go above and beyond and funny thing is I've been told by coworkers or some leadership not to do it so much because then they take advantage of my goodwill. To me, doing my job and doing it with a good attitude means a lot. To me I'm representing my family name, I try to always honor my family and do my best. I have even been told I'm too nice and the customers will take advantage of me etc. The reasons you spoke of here is the reason why I always do the things I do regardless of what these other people say. Honestly I don't feel appreciated at work but I still work hard and always come with a good attitude no matter how bad I'm doing or whatever and it's very hard because when I go home I don't bring my work home either. I shield my family from my rough days, I don't want to make them worry or anything and I am not going to do like some people that take it out on their kids or their wife. It's very hard keeping things inside and not having someone to release to. I do talk to my wife about my things sometimes but it's hard cause I try not to worry her and what not. It's nice to hear how you took care of your employee like that. For me it has been quite the opposite effect and I've almost had it with this job. The thing is I love the company and not the people but I hope to find one similar to it but one that will appreciate me in the future.

Patrick, whilst you were going through your list of companies, I was thinking of Amazon as a positive and lo and behold, there it is as your no.9. I won't get into it but I have had nothing but good experiences with them anytime something goes sideways. I don't reside on your continent but it does not mean that I can't relate to everything you said. I believe it is the inherent nature of a person to naturally be a good employee or a bad employee and the reverse side of that coin is a good employer and a bad employer. I always find it necessary to tell you what a natural, wonderful speaker you are.
