Awesome video - just replaced the valve cover gasket on my 2005 4-Cyl Tacoma today (took about 3 hours). The star-shaped stud bolts require a small E6 Torx Socket, and that difficult-to-reach bolt holding the metal pipe at the back (near the fuel injection rail) requires a 12mm Flex-Head Ratcheting Wrench.

Worked well for me, Thank You Brian. For those (like me) out there working under a shade tree, with a more limited tool box, I did this without the E6 socket or removing the studs. I think the studs helped me align the cover, and I figure there is some risk trying to remove the studs anyway. I also managed to loosen that 12mm bolt (bracket in the back holding the PCV plumbing) with just a 12 point box end wrench. It is slow and you might have to come up with a "cheater" to initially break the bolt. I had no cordless driver either. I used a 1/4" nut driver to spin the 10 mm screws out after breaking them with a 3/8" ratchet driver. Going back in with them I used the nut driver and a 1/4" ratchet to snug them up. Worked fine.

Great Video.I have 173000 miles on my 2008 Toyota, the leak started 142000. I replaced the Gaskets,Spark Plugs,PCV Valve and Hose.(First Time for All).It took me around five hours.I had to clean all bolts,parts and clamps was cover in oil and dirt. The two best tips that help was , loosen the 12 mm bolt in the back and remove the E6 Torx studs.

@johnmariano47
@johnmariano47 3 жыл бұрын
This repair is very common as the engine ages right around 100k mark. Once you see leaks around the valve cover, it is time to replace the gasket. It progresses to burnt rubber smell when you start the vehicle that infiltrates the cabin on top of losing oil over time dripping around the hot engine attracting dust etc...

Great video Brian. It helped me a lot. I removed the battery lead before starting with this process according the haynes manual and now it does not want to idle (+-400rpm) and dies after a few seconds . I know about the VVTI relearning process but in those cases it just runs rough for 10-15 starts. Now it does not idles after 15-20 starts.I have to keep it running by adding some rpm's manually. It runs fine, does not skip a beat. Did I reconnect something in a wrong way?

Nice video on the gasket. I recently replaced my dads gasket and when I removed the cover I noticed the timing chain had a lil bit of slack on the top between the camshafts under the plastic guide. Is that normal to have a lil bit of play? Or it should all be tensioned tight? I couldn’t really tell in your video if your chain was a lil lose under the plastic guide.
@HowtoAutomotive
@HowtoAutomotive 5 жыл бұрын
It’s possible that the engine just rested in the spot where there is a little slack. But it’s hard to tell without seeing it. If there was rattling noise of any type before then I will suspect a problem. But most likely it’s a non-issue.
@Ozzaphellah
@Ozzaphellah 5 жыл бұрын
How to Automotive Oh ok. So there is a engine position where the chain can have a lil slack? Because the truck runs really good. No weird sounds or anything. She does have 250,000 miles on it but runs great. I maintain it well for my dad. Thank you for the quick answer. I was thinking the tensioner was bad or the engine was going to blow up if the timing jumped teeth.

I suggest you find out what the code is first with a scan tool and go from there, It could be related to the components touched on this job in which case it should be easier to fix or just another trouble that is totally unrelated to it.

I cleaned up the surfaces with brake clean and for added insurance I put a light coat of RTV on the mating surfaces . also when Tightening the cover all you need is a nut driver . the cover has molded raised tabs that make contact with the head when tightened down so once you make contact with the head that's it . My Toyota Stealership wants $350 plus tax to replace the valve cover, I will do it myself, just like I had to replace the garbage plastic thermostat bypass pipe that was leaking. Replaced it with the new steel one, and just installed 4 new coil packs because the engine started to vibrate excessively. All this occurred since hitting 109,000 miles. Almost forgot to mention, had to replace the Cat at 101,000 miles, and used Bill Hirsch paint on the rusty frame after the garbage one year sealer that the Dealership put on came off.
