If you're a DIYer and find yourself replacing a starter motor on an older Toyota Corolla, Matrix, or Pontiac Vibe, that's an excellent time to also replace the throttle, intake manifold, and valve cover gaskets, too. Removing the throttle and intake manifold makes getting to the starter motor super easy, and since the lifespan of these gaskets is approximately the same as a stock starter motor it makes sense to take an extra hour to replace everything at once. Done properly that translates into thousands of more miles with less maintenance keeping that much more money in your pocket over the life of the car.

Bolt installed at 10:30 is the wrong one. That should be the long bolt that also holds the plastic engine top cover. It came out on mine when taking the plastic cover out and was wondering why the valve cover was missing a bolt. Thanks for the video 👍

And for anybody interested in the torque specifications for the valve cover are - 106 in lbs or about 9ft lbs in a crisscross order... 2003 to 2016 I believe

There is a little baggie with two small black seals that are included with the Fel-Pro kit, is that the ones that are placed on the long bolts at 10:17? The narrator did not mention it, but I guess that is where they go right?

Why didn't you put gasket maker near the timing chain?

If my gasket is broken, would the motor oil leak out and smoke when I drive it?
@tonycaffeine26427 жыл бұрын
what color smoke ? blue or white if its a blueish it could be a piston ring. if its white you could be burning oil.

1st) need to turn off the music 2nd)needs to be narrated better 3rd) need to tell what tools are needed. 4th)The machanic needs to give a little more explanation of what he is disconnecting and what it is just for education purposes.(I already know all the components he disconnected) but it's needed for newbies,like I said it would just be for education purposes. 5th)those small bolts that hold the valve cover gasket down need to be torked to Toyota specs.because especially with the air ratchet he could be tightening those too tight and cause the gasket to break,and then you would have an oil leak and be right back where you started. And last but not least. 6th) "Just Saying" those small things would of been more helpful in the video.

Maybe a dumb question but is there any reason I can't install the new gasket on the bottom section then place the cover on top?

There is a groove gasket goes into on valve cover... If it keeps falling off while assembling use some gasket silicone in groove in many spots on Valve cover to hold it in place. Change plugs while you have coils out.
@zzzbrianxxx8 жыл бұрын
how do you know when a gasket cover has to be replaced?
@SUDVD8 жыл бұрын
+Brian Schiller You can usually see oil leakage/stains/spots around the seam of the gasket when you visually inspect the top of the motor front/back

would it affect performance if its not replaced? im asking i may have a slight leak. wondering if its urgent to fix right away
@justint67437 жыл бұрын
Amir Riveroll of course, the chains and everything else have to be constantly lubricated given that you have the right amount of oil for your car to function at its best. With. A leak you can expect it to get sloppier, possibly lock up if you dont constantly fill up and let it dry out. Also the oil could spill onto other functioning and mechanical parts such as alternator, belts, etc depending on how bad of the leak is. Im gonna fix my moms corolla 04 ce cause it really needs work. Done a couple of these in school but with some background research im confident i can do this myself.
@DougHinVA5 жыл бұрын
I just went thru this... nearly identical symptoms as a failing fuel injector (I had 2 replaced over a year or so...), but cold engine startup gave off a bluish exhaust for 10-15 seconds (oil getting onto the cylinder/plug area). Best left to a mechanic unless you are fairly well skilled. At 261K, my 2000 Corolla will never need this again, so why fool with it... ?

The gasket does not fit over the small screw holes though?? That does not seem right to me. They have a different gasket that should last you a longer time, it has smaller circles for the screw holes and fits like a glove. It is made for the 1zz-fe engine

why its blue and the one i bought is black thx
@SUDVD8 жыл бұрын
+jirojoseph esman The Felpro gaskets are sometimes blue, other manufacturers make gaskets in different colors and sometimes even change the color of them. There is no real reason why it is blue.
