To his credit, he hesitated kissing “Elena” in 1x22. He kisses her on the cheek initially, but since it was actually Katherine, she looked disappointed it wasn’t a real kiss. So he went in for the kiss… but super slowly lol, like he was expecting Elena to stop him. I think that might’ve been the tipping point for his feelings because when he’s at the hospital with the real Elena, she says she doesn’t know wha he’s talking about, and he says even if she can forget they kissed, he can’t, etc.

@@luckyDancer100 I think it'd be hard for anyone to resist acting on their feelings. He buries himself in other things, but that can only last for so long because their feelings are magnified. He has a hard time not being near her, which is fun to watch when she gets to hating him in season 2.

Trueee I feel like he isn’t really in love with her until later. I feel like he loves her here but no in love yet. Because not too long after ethics Katherine comes back he tries to get back with her cause Elena didn’t want him. So he just must have not been in love with Elena unless he wouldn’t have tried to get back with Katherine and been so heartbroken about it. Idk though it’s messing with my mind lmaoooo.

Both their hearts were fractured in a way that made it possible. Damon's fractured when he found the tomb empty. Elena's fractured when Stefan left town with Klaus. That's not to say he'd choose Elena first. He'd choose Katherine first because he's loved her for 145 years. That's why Katherine comes first in 2x1. He kissed Elena because Katherine tore his heart out, and he was reaching for someone to hold onto for stability. That's why he snapped Jeremy's neck. He's still in love with Elena, he simply rebuilds their friendship because that's most important to him.

When Katherine wasn’t in the tomb, obviously a big part of him knew she didn’t really love him, but he foolishly held out hope. Katherine admitting his worst fear, that he basically wasted 150 years pining for someone who didn’t care about him, broke his heart. But it also made him appreciate Elena even more, since she’s extremely kind and generous, while also being strong-willed. Qualities he wanted to see in Katherine, but never materialized.

It's the same thing for Elena in 4x10, when she tells him in a voicemail she can't stand not being near him. Then in 1x21, it's what Damon tells Isobel when he attacks her. His entire threat is about Elena. Damon: You do not come into my town; threaten the people I care about. Going after Elena? Bad move. Isobel: I think that you underestimate how much Damon cares about you. His words are important because you get Elena's side of this in 3x22 and 4x6.
