Sammy: "The ‘Balance' record was such a great record, but it was during hard times for the band, and a very hard record to make. A lot of painful dark images, bickering amongst the band, health issues, but this live performance of Amsterdam on the Jon Stewart show shows how great this band was live. Wow & that's a TV performance"
Mike: "By the time the 'Balance' record came out, there was lots of tension within the band, personally, and professionally. One thing that was understood though was that the music was the important thing, and when we got together to play live we kicked ass, be it in concert or guesting on a TV show. This clip of us on Jon Stewart shows we were still delivering the goods!!!"

Unbelievable I remember when balance came out. It blew me away. Eddie was still killing it. Sammy with those vocals and those screams. Wow. I sure do miss those days.

Agree. What a shame that this lineup didn't get to keep it going and make another 2-3 albums. Eddie is arguably the greatest guitarist off all time but he messed up a good thing here.

All VH fans just need to face the fact that both versions of VH were great. DLR and Hagar both brought great talent to the band in their own way. I loved both versions equally

Totally agree! The darkness and tension of the strain in the band is fully captured in the songs.. great stuff (and of course they split shortly after)

Wow, it’s been passed 27-28 years since then. I was fortunate enough to get Balance as soon as it hit the shelves and listened to it when dad was driving us around on our old car. Excellent work, Sammy. I miss those times.

Such a frikken awesome song. Can't believe this is almost 28 years ago. There's a video on youtube of Eddie in 1985 working on the main riff of Amsterdam. Crazy to think this song could have been on "1984", but just wasn't ready.

I never thought Sammy-era VH could top 5150, but they did it with Balance. Amsterdam, Aftershock, Feelin, Seventh Seal, Don't Tell Me What Love Can Do, Can't Stop Loving You, Not Enough & Deja Vu - not many albums contain this many awesome songs.

As a lover of every single member of VH (even Gary), it was so painful to know that such talent was sitting at home instead of delighting us all. We didn't see the internal struggles (but even pre-internet, the rumor mill was working overtime). I wish the inter-personal relationships were better, but damn did you guys make some amazing music.

I don’t know how in the hell I have never seen this! But God, damn this is the one of the best performances I’ve seen them with Sammy. Of course, they’re all killer, but this is just amazing perfect sound perfect! Production on this is excellent, Eddy’s tone just killing it Alex Michael, beautiful rendition of this song. So glad to have made it to the 1991 and 1995 (proud to be part of the released concert movie!!) tours in Toronto. 2 of the best nights of my life. I miss Eddie dearly, I miss Van Halen dearly. Rest in peace G.O.A.T E.V.H.

I love all VH albums, but my two favorites are Balance and Fair Warning. IIRC, both were cut when things were tough in the band or for Eddie. I think it gave him some more edge.

We all love this, Ed is amazing, Sammy & Mike too, but what about awesome drummer Alex? I've always loved the sound of Al's snare, that amazing crack with each hit. (Alex weight tuned his snare drum) If you will, start at the beginning again and focus on Al's drumming, maybe close your eyes to help single out Al's drumming here. He's so deep in the grove, no standard drumming here, listen to all the different parts he plays, to me totally amazing, the highest of professional drumming there is. And with Mike's awesome bass playing in perfect grove with Al, wow. Then for Eddie & Sammy to play & sing along with this drums & bass grove, it all comes together so perfect. Alex recently sold all or most of his drums gear at auction and is retired from drumming now, so a huge thank you to Alex Van Halen! And you too Eddie, Mike, and Sammy!

I would add in Def Leppard (any era haha). I would also say Van Hagar more than Van Halen simply because DLR live can leave a lot to be desired singing wise.

What suck is that I guess we take it for granted the band will be around forever and they’ll continue making music for a long time like the stones or Aerosmith and time flies by so fast and things change and now Eddie is gone Alex don’t even talk to Sammy no more how unfortunate but they look back at when they were at their peak my God how great Van Halen was I will always miss these guys but I’m fortunate because I got to see them from the beginning to the end
