DLR was the perfect compliment to Eddie's pyrotechnic guitar playing. His look, singing style and overall persona was a perfect fit for the band at that time. Not surprising this song sounds like it has one foot in the 70s and one foot in the 80s, it was written by a band in the '70s that helped forged the sound of the 80s.

Well yeah and this album came out in late 1979, so... It's not like you can really divide music by the arbitrary decades, it's kind of silly when you think about it. There was a vast diversity of even just "rock" music in every decade, and especially the 60s and 70s

What people nowadays think of as the "Heavy Metal Sound" was actually influenced a lot by Eddie's sound. Before Eddie, "Heavy Metal" guitar sounded more like Zeppelin or Black Sabbath. In that way, he unintentionally ushered in the 80s Metal guitar sound.

Best summer beach song EVER! That "Mammy and Pappi" line is straight from the Andrew Sister's song "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy from Company B. The Andrew Sisters were super big in the 40's. Especially around ww2. Roth often sampled old songs for some of his lyrics. One. what Lex said about Davis Lee Roth is why most people prefer him to Sammy Hagar as singer. Two, I saw Van Halen Twice. Once around 1978 or 1979 just after the first album but just before this one. I think they were good. I was too high to remember the concert. I really only remember the first and last song.The last song was "Fire" and Alex set his drums on fire as he played it. It was at the Palladium in NYC on 14th Street. Back then, they sold beer at the venue and it was an unwritten rule that whatever you brought into the concert you had to share it with the people in your section. I have no idea what I took that night. Saw them again for Sammy Hagar's first album in Conn.. The concert that they filmed Eddie Playing Eruption thats all over the net. I wanna say around 1984 or 85. I remember that one better and it was very good.

@wadsworthaaron
@wadsworthaaron 2 жыл бұрын
Diamond Dave was perfect for the band until he wasn't (1985-ish). Sammy stepped in and helped the band to grow and, in most regards, sound better. Dave's voice was pretty much over in the mid-90s (1-2 octave low-tenor range doesn't cut it for rock & roll), so it worked out for the band. IMO Van Halen should have called it "done" when Sammy left in the 90s... their new music was sub-par and the rotating roster was just a distraction.

Pretty insightful thoughts y’all had there in the middle of the song, yes VH was extremely cutting edge when they came out in late 70’s. No other band was like them and every band after their first album wanted to be them. In the 70’s, rock was about dark, mystical topics, music was heavy feeling. Van Halen was all “incredible guitar work and amazing entertainment!” …..and they were always smiling and looked like they were having fun. Totally opposite what most popular rock bands were doing in the 70’s. IMO, All of the 80’s rock bands are just other peoples versions of VH.

Watch the Smithsonian interview with Eddie Van Halen. He and his brother were very interesting people. Eddie's guitar sound changed guitars thereafter. He perfected a type of guitar amp that allows those outrageous sounds at a more manageable (more recordable) volume. He also invented a method of dipping guitar pickups in wax to prevent the uncontrollable squealing and feedback at those gain levels. ALL pickups made by any manufacturer after 1982 are now wax dipped. They were immigrants from Holland. Dutch Dad. Indonesian Mom. Dad was a classically trained musician. I wasn't a Van Halen fan back in the 80s, but me and every other guitar player wanted to sound like him. That Sound! Especially after 1981! That Chunky low end along with the high harmonics. Still not a huge VH fan, but I've come to appreciate what a monster of the instrument Eddie was and what an interesting person he was.

Me to, Van Halen is my favorite band of all time, 54 as well, so great to be young in this era! Today's youth are being cheated, they don't know what good music is! The band before Sammy was awesome!! Then their sound changed a bit. We were truly blessed to be young in those days! Where does the time go? RIP EDDIE, Thanks for the memories, You we're the most explosive guitarist in history,!!!!

The song was released in 1979 which was very astute for you to notice one foot in the 70's and one in the 80's. This was a precurser to what was coming.

The song is from 1979 so end of the seventies bringing in the 80's. And Van Halen did put on a helluva show. They were the best Live band of their era, the David Lee Roth Era from 1978 to 1984.

When you were commenting about van Halen being a pioneer of 1980s sound in the late 70s I agree. In my opinion the era known as the 80s started a few years before and ended a few years after the actual decade. Those years are the pinnacle of rock ‘n’ roll. So many bands and so many great songs!❤

VH II came out in 1979, so they were bringing in the 80's but with a little 70's flavor too.

I am about to turn 59 years old, I grew up listening to Van Halen, nobody ever knew a guitar could make so many different sounds and tones and ways to played until Eddie Van Halen came along, I have seen Van Halen 9 times 5 times in the DLR era and 4 times with Sammy Hagar, I am more of a DLR era kinda a guy but DLR and Eddie Van Halen were an excellent duo and compliment to each other, he was the guitar GOD and DLR was the greatest front man ever!!! Stay Frosty

Your assessment regarding the sound of "Beautiful Girls" bridging the two decades is very fitting since it's the last track of the album, which was the last to be released in the '70s.

Great reaction. When they broke in '78 David Lee Roth said then "We are the band of the 80s" , so it rings true with what you were saying. They were the greatest , most spectacular live band from 78 to 84 with DLR. No-one could touch them ! You have reacted to Dance the Night away. Here's a live version from their first headlining tour in 79 , amazing ! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/otKWnaeGp5yaimg.html

You guys nailed it. Late seventies but they were trail blazers and so much fun. This came out when I was in 10th Grade and I had just got my first electric guitar and amp and I struggled so hard to learn that amazing riff. It was a couple years later until I could actually do it any real Justice. And I just loved this song. I had played their first album until I wore it out and just about every so g on it became a radio hit. Then they released this and I loved this song so much. Plus at that age, beautiful girls were very much on my mind! I love that it's a fast swing song, and they do a fair amount of swing, which I always felt like there should be more of that in rock and roll. And yeah I saw them in 1978 and 1979 in small venues and the shows were absolutely insane. I saw them a couple times in the early 80s and the venues were much larger and not nearly as crazy. And David Lee Roth actually was a pretty good singer. He just added so much color to it most of the time. But I've heard some of his isolated vocal tracks and it's pretty impressive. I still wish you would do Little Dreamer off their first album. More of a ballad but just beautiful.
