Ed’s the king. Sammie’s no slouch either. Alex is a madman. But for me, Michael Anthony is what makes Van Halen sound like Van Halen. He is the quintessential back up singer. His groove on the bass is unduplicatable. A nice guy and a great band mate.

I'm so sick of this tired ass old argument. It's ALL good. I love it all. Even the Gary Cherone stuff was equally great to me. Van Halen was always good. I'm glad we had the different singers. They all brought something different and amazing in their own way,

Well said Eddie was progressive whether it came out good or not so like Bowie he did what felt good at the time a true artist
@SDesWriter3 жыл бұрын
Except because it didn't work with Cherone there was no more original VH music after that 2nd album. Even by Cherone's admission the album was not polished and not nearly as good as what they were capable of. He was used to being in a band that all pulled the same direction. Eddie and Alex always went their way and it was only Sammy's refusal to compromise that helped them stay focused. Dave didn't want the band to even incorporate keys, so if he had stayed it would have been an awkward fit.....

I've always said Sammy Hagar is a phenomenally talented vocalist but damn he just held his own next to his bandmate who happens to be the greatest living rock guitarist.
@tak1784 жыл бұрын
Sammy has been playing guitar longer than Eddie. The difference is Eddie defined the genre, while Sammy laid the groundwork. Sammy still says that Eddie is the best of all time to this day. They may no longer be friends, but he has tremendous respect for him. As for Sammy, he's a Jimmy Page archetype...playing within the song rather than rewriting it with a solo. Sammy doesn't get his due, because he's content just to make music. That's how it should be.
@tonydegregorio48954 жыл бұрын
@@tak178 I'm 100% a fan of Sammy since the early 80s and he definitely is a great guitarist but his vocals are just mindblowing. I challenge anyone to sing Dreams in the original key, no falsetto, with the passion, i don't think it can be done truthfully. I would walk across the country to see a Van Hagar reunion but doesn't look like that will ever happen.

@PittmanKen3 жыл бұрын
They were clearly the number one band in the world when David Lee Roth was there and were dragged down to the middle of the pack after that. Part of it was the fans were turned off by all the infighting but it was a drop off in chemistry that could not be replaced even by the very good rock ‘n’ roll performer of Sammy Hagar. My opinion is no more important than yours but clearly the hubris of Van Halen took a dive and so did David Lee Roth.

I don't think Sammy really ever needed VH. His work with Montrose and solo shit was great to begin with. When he joined VH, I thought the band just took off. Roth is a great frontman, don't get me wrong, but all the things that Sammy brought to the table just gave VH that extra kick in the ass after 1984. Amazing that Sammy and Eddie lasted as long as they did.

Slap is correct. Hagar was VERY well established. VH practically went volcanic after he got there. Sammy had been touring and playing his ass off for years before that time.
