For the past week, I've been based around Mount Rainier in Washington State. If you've ever wondered what a very normal day looks like in my life as a van-dwelling outdoor adventure photographer, here ya go. Early morning drives into the mountains, sunrise photography shoots, coffee and editing breaks, sunset hikes, and all the other stuff in between. Hope you all are having a beautiful weekend ♡

Hey :) I’m Christian Schaffer, and I’ve lived on the road full-time since May 2018. This journey began in 2013 when I left the corporate world to build my career as an outdoor adventure & travel photographer. As a semi-minimalist, I eventually decided to donate/sell most of my belongings and move into my 4x4 Nissan Xterra. After 14 months of SUV living and falling madly in love with the open road - I bought a van and hired a team to build it out. Van life enables me to experience and document the beauty of our natural world on a whole new level, all while having my home and office nearby. My hope is that by sharing my own personal highs and lows along this (sometimes) wild journey, you might be inspired to hit the road or spend more time outdoors. Maybe one day I'll see you out on that open road 🚐

I was flying over Seattle, the plane was heading towards Tacoma airport, when taking a look outside. I saw nothing but a cloud cover and a great beautiful mountain breaking through it. I didn't even know about that mountain, it was an incredible sight.

@@ChristianSchaffer I didn't either, otherwise I would have seen the fantastic scenery coming. I just asked my neighbor, if I could took a look since we went for landing. So I leaned over him, watching through the small window, and couldn't believe that incredible sight. That volcano was so mighty. And that's not all. A minute later, he said "look at that". I took a look again, a small hole opened in the cloud cover, exactly over the space needle, it was unbelievable, like in a bad movie. My neighbor, he was from the U.S. national team in chainsaw sculpture carving (didn't even know that exists) said "it's so great to be at home again" (he was on a championship, I think in Russia). I was so jealous, Seattle seamed so beautiful and magic, and he was at home there. That was 2015, I was traveling on a conference. I'm a migrant in Germany and there's no place I feel so belonging to like that guy in that moment. I fell in love with Seattle then, and now I understand why there are so many love and drama movies playing there, I notice them on TV at least twice a year since then.

It’s never too late to try something new ☺️ every time I wonder if I’m too old for something or I’ve ‘missed the boat’ - I think of my eighty year old grandma who still downhill skies 😅 I’m only 36 and you couldn’t pay me to downhill ski haha. It’s all relative, and so much is possible 🤍

I see why you have plenty of work!!...It feels like the music was Made for your scenic shots... not the other way around. (okay, am buttering you up a bit, as this is really good!) I loved the Northwest in September - 25 years ago - on a visit. I keep coming back to watch it again... The soothing echoing voices of forlorn sprites and fairies, then the rumbling, like on the Shining! -Hauntingly exhilarating... in the best ways. And, I live on Maui, yet remember the beauty... looking just as you have captured here... Wowww!

Hi, I’m not someone who takes a lot of photos or even have a lot of photos that someone else has taken. Snaps of holidays or events don’t do anything for me but your photography and videos of mountainscapes and desert imagery makes me both want to be there and be able to capture imagery like you show to us. Beautiful! I have found myself mountain biking as the dusk grows darker. I'm not much of a singer, but I sang my heart out to warn the lions away. My favorite song that popped into my head during those times was from Wizard of Oz, "If I only had a brain." Making up new lyrics kept me entertained. Be safe out there! ❤️

Loved this adventure and getting to see behind the scenes too. The scinematography is insane, you’re so good at this. Thank you for showing us the beautiful nature and Inspiring us to get out there more. Also I appreciate the fact that you’re honest about the cold. You could’ve easily posed in just a tshirt with the beautiful sunset, feeding into what the media shows us that vanlife is like - warm and tropical hikes in beautiful scenery.

One day I woke up in my apartment in Manhattan and thought, 'What do I like to do?' The answer was politics, photography and travel. A friend had a trucking company so I got a job driving a truck cross country. I stayed on that truck for 7 years and loved the job. Not only did I get thousands of images but got to speak with hundreds of people from all walks of life. I was able to work on political campaigns in every part of the country whenever I had a few days in a particular location. I would recommend the job to anyone wanting to discover America on many different levels while doing a very essential job that is the life blood of the nation! Love your work and the quality of the production.

Totally agree with your headlamp strategy Christian! I only wear one when I absolutely need it. In most cases, I can see better without it and have more awareness of everything around me.

You made my Sunday morning with that footage that takes so much discipline to get. Seeing the golden, pastels, and light shine through those clouds in those frames was amazing! Mountain lions will attack from behind the neck and head. Going to a sunrise, or leaving a sunset in the dark, I would raise my tripod up with one hand and let it rest on the back of my neck, just in case. I know how it feels walking back like that. Please keep shooting and sharing your awesome work!
