Its like when Kara and Nate entered Portland they pulled out their emergency hipster clothes to blend in.

We locals have a saying; if you can’t see Mt Hood , it’s raining. If you can see Mt Hood, it’s going to rain.

So as a downtown Portland resident I appreciate the honesty from Kara and Nate about what the city looks like to a visitor. Running through downtown every day I see a lot of people experiencing homelessness and boarded up windows. The homelessness problem seems to be a long-term issue for a city that tries its best to give these people a shot but is dealing with a serious housing shortage. The boarded up windows are obviously a result of the BLM protests that hit the news and the prep for protests after the election. There are many of the streets on the east side of the river that are much more pleasant right now. Hawthorne, Division, Mississippi, and Broadway to name a few. Portland is definitely going through a lot right now but I guess I just wanted to emphasize that there's plenty of fun things to do around here despite the struggles we're going through. Side note... pretty freaking cool seeing Kara and Nate on the same waterfront path I run on basically every day! 😄

The world's smallest park is also the only park that anyone is allowed to landscape, no permissions needed. Sometimes it has leprechauns, gnomes, Barbie pools.... a tiny amusement park. The reason for the park is all that land was donated...providing there was a park there....they forgot to specify a required size....so the land got used for everything but a park and sold off, roads were made and really this park is an insult to the guy who donated it. Fyi durring a pandemic (portlanders take seriously) they CLOSED down, and all the riots was a really.bad time to visit. But the homeless are also a deterrent all the time now. When you go east in the Gorge visit the full sized Stonehenge on the Washington side near Briggs. Fun, beautiful and free. Also be sure to detour by the falls and take old Hwy 30 adds 20 minutes to your drive but you will never do a prettier or more scenic drive in your life!

I’m pretty sure I was unknowingly 5 mins away from you most of the time while you were in Portland, which kills me. I wanted to thank you for re-recording your thoughts on Portland with the understanding of what is currently going on. As a city, we are going through a lot of change, hopefully for the better, which is even harder than normal because we have the eyes of the world on us. When it is safe to reopen everything I really think you owe to yourself to come back and see the splendor of our city. Also you haven’t even scratched the surface of what our city has to offer and you definitely need a local to show you around! My wife and I would be happy to volunteer. We’ve been following your travels since the trans Siberian train videos and we feel like we’ve seen lots of the world thanks to your videos. Have a great time in the PNW, and hopefully we can see you in our city again.

On September 1, 2019 my wife and I came across Vlog #664... "Our TINY HOME IN THE SWISS ALPS". We were curious and continued watching a few more from the Switzerland series. The drama of the glacier crossing hooked us and we needed to see more. On September 7, 2019 we began our journey and started with FIRST VLOG EVER and went one by one through the "Watch From The Beginning" playlist. On November 1, 2020 we finally caught up and were able to watch this video the same day it was posted. After spending hundreds of hours with you two I wanted to thank you! Our travel wish list has grown as we learned about familiar (and unfamiliar) countries and saw what experiences each destination had to offer. Thank you for sharing the videos and we look forward to the next one as you continue your adventure.

I have a college degree and am about to be homeless November 30th when my lease is up. I couldn't afford another lease somewhere else as I've been unemployed since May 💔 been selling all my belongings and trying to mentally prepare. My heart is broken. Praying for everyone struggling right now, no one deserves to be homeless.

as an Oregon native I'm glad you guys kept in the Portland clips and were honest about your visit. The city is going through a lot right now and you guys were there with open minds and brought some light to a very dark time in the city's history. I'm glad you enjoyed Voodoo Nate those apple fritters are my favorite. So happy the coast treated you guys well its definitely my favorite place to be!

I'm glad you took the bit out about Portland. From growing up in a city with a lot of poverty and social problems, my advice would be to acknowledge that the city is struggling (and acknowledge why and how it is struggling) but focus mostly on the positives, the changes taking place and the small businesses fighting in a tough environment.

I am so happy that you guys have finally made to Oregon. I have lived in Oregon my whole life and have experienced all these amazing places my whole life. I am so happy that you guys came to Portland with an open mind and knew that this is not how it has always been and hopefully wont stay like it is much longer. I really hope that you guys do come back and visit again, maybe during the summer time and found someone to show you guys around town. There is so much more to Portland then the city center. Also the beaches during the summer are so amazing. They my not be super hot but they are warm. The place that you stayed in Nehalem is so amazing cause you are able to just walk to the beach at night and have a bond fire and it is just so beautiful and you see all the stars. It it just magical and it is one of my favorite memories from my child hood. Thank you you for sharing your time in Oregon and also understanding that Portland is not all there is to are state and that Portland is not always like it is now. I'm sorry you did not get the view of Mount Hood you were after, but am glad you found Voodoo Doughnuts, Multnomah Falls and the Pacific coast enjoyable. I appreciate your attempt to explain your feelings about Portland. 2020 has been a truly tumultuous year for this city. It has been at the heart of more than one national conversation this year. The pained and angry responses to racial inequality, white supremacy, police brutality, economic inequity, financial hardship and this deadly Virus have often spilled into our streets and are front and center in our consciousness (every day). I would not expect you to know that. Nor would that make for great entertainment on KZfaq. I understand that. Even so, I felt sad that the portion of the video showing Portland focused primarily on the area close to Voodoo Doughnuts. It IS one of the areas of this city that has been greatly impacted by the houselessness situation here. The problem has only grown bigger as more and more people have lost their jobs or been evicted due to COVID-19 related business closures and loss of income. While your video was panning across tents and shelters belonging to people living in rough circumstances, you said that these people you did encounter were not the ambassadors one would want for a city. I don't think they've ever claimed to be. In a perfect world they certainly wouldn't be. And yet, they ARE people and this is THEIR reality at the moment. It may not be pleasant to look at, and I think many Portlanders like myself DO find this unacceptable, but it is indicative of much larger societal problems that have yet to be addressed. The fact that anyone would have to choose to live that way in the richest country on earth is shameful. I understand that this was uncomfortable for you both and no doubt a stain on your travel vlog, but perhaps it will also draw attention to the incredible disparity in people's lived realities in this country. There IS way more to see here. It's unfortunate that you were unable to experience the West Hills, Japanese gardens, Forest Park, Columbia Gorge, Mount Tabor, North and South Portland, Mississippi, Hawthorne, Division and Metro areas, as well as the rivers. Maybe next time?

Just FYI, that isn't the sketchy part of downtown, it's really close to where the Saturday Market is usually held, with live street music and tons of smiling faces but because of the unemployment rates a lot more people are homeless right now in Portland. I'm glad you found some places that made your visit worth it but I hope you will come back one day, when we are fully open, and get to see how cool it really is!

I appreciate that you were trying to be diplomatic when discussing Portland. I'm wondering if you actually researched the city before you went, or just unhappily ended up in a bad area by the donut place, and so didn't get a broader view of what Portland has to offer. And, Kara, I'm thinking of you. Because according to my Facebook coffee group, Portland has a vibrant coffee scene.

I’m so glad Nate interrupted the video and, even though you didn’t have the best time of your lives, you didn’t let that negative perspective take over. I’m glad because I visited Portland about 2 years ago and had a blast. In fact, I made a special post on my social medias saying how happy I was for encountering what I described as “the nicest people in the US.” Everyone was extremely welcoming and did so much to help my friend and I when we needed information or anything else. Portland has a special place in my heart and I really hope they get back to being that happy & weird place they are! I also hope you both get the chance to visit the city again in a different time! ☺️

Portland is hands down our favorite city in the US (after having RV'd across it for 4 years). We also lived there for a year before RV life. That being said, even before all of the upheaval, we never would recommend going downtown as any kind of introduction to the city. Yes there are a lot of homeless people and it's mostly commercial/ not residential. The city of Portland is so great because it's made up of a bunch of different neighborhoods. Personally, we lived in the NE part of the city, the Alberta street area is amazing- tons of shops, restaurants, bars, etc. Everything is really spread out and that's why it's so great- you don't go to downtown to "go to Portland." Which is very different than other major cities. Also if you're looking for campground info in Oregon, we really enjoyed Harbor Vista County Park in Florence, Oregon. The sites are pretty spread out with lots of greenery in between, so you don't feel like you're right on top of your neighbors. Florence is a cute little coastal town that has these really cool sand dunes on the beach. People ride ATV's and stuff across them, or it's just a great place to walk along the beach. You can take a walk from the county park down to the beach- maybe like a 15 min walk (or drive down there) and you'll find secluded beaches all to yourselves!

It’s not just Portland. All major cities look like that downtown right now, at least on the west coast. It isn’t dangerous unless you’re actively protesting one way or another. Homelessness is also a huge issue but it doesn’t mean that cities aren’t safe or sketchy. I’ve lived in Portland and I visited this summer to see for myself what’s been going on. People are practicing their right to free speech and some bad eggs get violent, that’s all that is happening. It’s not a war zone in the slightest. And the homeless aren’t out to get you, they have bigger problems to deal with. These are trying times for everyone. And thank you for saying your opinion so respectfully. We did the Oregon Coast in June. It is such a stunning place. Watching the sunset on a beach with no one else but my hubby is one of those magical travel memories that will stay locked in my heart forever.

Honestly I'm so excited to see these videos every time they upload. they could be AS LONG as you want to make them. Longer videos mean more content. Either way you make it an amazing day when I see an upload.

I loved Portland when I visited roughly 4 or 5 years ago. I think it's okay (and encouraged) to talk about what's happening in the US right now, because like, we're going through some s*** lol. You guys are also awesome American ambassadors, and I think it's okay to give your opinions on the subject. It would add context to things you're seeing as you travel around the country. Also, if you roll through the Midwest and stop in Minneapolis, I'll gladly give you guys a Jucy Lucy tour :)

I'm someone who has lived in Portland my whole life. I was so excited when I saw that you were coming through Oregon, but this video was disappointing. You visited one small part of Portland, the worst part right now, and didn't give the rest of the city a chance.

I live in Oregon. Born and raised here and live about 30 min away from Portland. Never in my life, I've ever been so disappointed in my city. I feel terrible you saw us like this, this is not how it use to be. I love all that you guys do and thank you for giving Oregon a chance. The rest of oregon is beautiful though!

In my experience with the Pacific Northwest, when the forecast calls for sunshine all day, it means, "sunshine with intermittent periods of rain," ha ha. When I lived in Vancouver (Canada, not Washington), nobody ever commented on the rain. Rain was unremarkable. They only ever commented when the sun came out, or when it snowed.

Dear Kara and Nate, My husband is Filipino-American, grew up in Oregon and before Covid, we go every year while based in the Philippines. As someone who loves Portland/Oregon, and as someone who lives in the Philippines and has traveled in places like Palawan, Boracay etc. Believe me when I say that in my own personal opinion, Portland is in the same level of love as I have for the Philippines and I think that's saying something. This year is not the best time to explore Portland but don't let that stop you from exploring it maybe in the future. In the same way that you did a do-over of Philippines because your 1st time was not good, give Portland another try next time.

I have been a fan since literally day one and it’s crazy how far you guys have come!!

I think you inadvertently walked through the roughest part of the city. Portland and Seattle are kind of weird where it's little pockets of homeless ppl. Both cities are going through a hard time on that front and I appreciate that you decided to edit your initial impressions. It would have been a very different experience of you had gone to the other Voodoo location 🤷‍♀️

Kara coffee is a HUGE scene in Portland, you missed out on Deadstock Coffee and Cadillac Cafe. You guys definitely have to visit again because there was a lot that was missed.

What you saw in PDX was a combination of factors. Due to Covid restrictions most businesses downtown have been closed since March, they were boarded up for security then, not because of the protests. The area near Voodoo is near two of the major houseless services/feeding centers so many of the houseless stay nearby. There is also a very large houseless camp nearby that the city set up when Covid hit in order to provide the houseless with adequate sanitation facilities so as to keep the virus from running rampant through that community. Finally, there are the protests. Oregon and Portland in particular is a progressive, activist state. We show up to protest. In normal times you can find a protest of some sort a few times a month. Given a righteous cause like the need for racial equity that the murder of George Floyd brought to the forefront and Portlander’s are in it for the long haul. Add the brutalization that protesters have experienced at the hands of Portland Police Bureau and the Dept of Homeland Security officers that were deployed here early in the summer and protesters are doubled down. Mainstream media hasn’t covered the protests evenly. To get a full flavor of the brutality you’d have to watch local freelance journalist and watch the lawsuits being filed against the city. That’s not to say that some protests haven’t devolved into riots or that during protests property damage hasn’t been done; at times it has. Realize that you saw Portland at it’s worst and it’s best. It’s economy is at its worst. Parts of downtown don’t look a beautiful as they usually do. Portland’s people & spirit is at its best trying to survive and to advocate and care for those who are in need. Come see us again when Covid restrictions lift. Watch how what happens in Portland is already bringing about changes in policing in the country. We are a beautiful city. Portland will be worth your second look.

So I just got back from Portland and I had a great time! Yeah, the downtown area is maybe a little grim right now, but there's a whole interesting and vibrant city outside of that. Idk, I just don't think any big American city is going to have that feeling that we want when traveling right now. It's just not the time.

Sorry you didn’t have a great experience in Portland. We’ve lived here for years and it’s one of our favorite cities in the US. It’s true the downtown area is having a tough time but there are actually some great neighborhoods to visit and walk around. Portland has always been very much of a foodie city but Covid has reduced the options quite a bit unfortunately. If you come through again let us know and we’ll be happy to show you around. On the coast near Canon Beach, if it is open make sure to visit Ecola State Park, the views looking down the coast are spectacular.

This was such a fun vlog to see. My family lives in Portland and I don't get to see them that much and its hard to go out there every year especially now so when you were going to these places and seeing Oregon for the first time it made me so happy because it also felt like I was there. I wish I could have showed you around! My family has lived here forever and we would have loved to show you the sights. It was so interested seeing all of these shots of places that I either have seen regularly since I was little or see when I go downtown. Absolutely. Crazy! If you're still here, and if it's open, I would suggest going to stay at the Adobe in Yahats. My mom used to work there, the views are amazing, there are tons of private beaches you can hang out on, and I just can't recommend that place enough. I'm sorry you had to visit when our city is going through such awful stuff, I wish you could've seen some of the better parts of Portland, but if you come back after Covid-19, and you'd still like some locals to show you around, we would be happy to. Aww, it's been years since I've been to Multnomah Falls. So awesome seeing the lovely OR through your eyes. It's one of my favorite places. Also, the reason the coast is so lovely is because the Oregon Parks and Rec Dept makes sure that the entirety of it remains public access. Good stuff!

I appreciate you shedding a light on the homeless situation in this video in Portland by showing images of homeless people sleeping on the streets but I don't necessarily appreciate you showing those images while saying these people aren't necessarily the people you want as ambassadors for your city... I hate to say it but a lot of homeless people have a lot of good opinions and points.. outlooks... all it takes is one missed paycheck to end up just like them... I've met a homeless person that used to be a lawyer made a couple bad decisions and now they're on the streets and do you mean to tell me that, that homeless person wouldnt be (educated or able to hold a structured conversation) a good person to talk to or ask about the city or even fun things they used to do in the city... Not all homeless people are bad and I hate the stigma that they are it's just simply not true.... Love your videos keep up the good work

What an interesting time to be traveling. I am glad you both are realistic that these times are extraordinary and you can't just show up in a city and have a normal tourist experience. People are struggling like never before and that's important to realize that when traveling through a place. I like how you handled it and from someone who did the vanlife thing in 2017 and settled down in Portland, give it another chance at a different time. There are so many wonderful things about the area.

Downtown Portland feels empty for several different reasons. It's not just the protests - although that is part of it, sure. COVID means all the downtown offices are working remotely and all the tourists are staying home and not filling the giant downtown hotels. Multiple super famous restaurants have closed permanently. And I'm sure more will follow. Thankfully, the food cart scene is still vibrant and resilient. VooDoo is near where I used to work, and it was always a little sketchy looking. So many people in crisis and we've never had enough housing. At night (when stores were allowed to be open at night) there were blocks of bars nearby and drunken crowds would stand in line for 24/7 donuts. There are a lot of campers and more so since COVID, as they've been reluctant to clear them out in the middle of a pandemic. If you're not from the area, it's shocking to see. I know it was when I first moved here. And with COVID distance requirements, now we have even fewer emergency shelter beds. It's a mess, but I think we'll eventually find solutions. When this is over, it will be the vibrant, quirky city it was a year ago. But if you get a chance to cut through town when Pip's and Blue Star are open, I promise they're both worth the visit. You also should see our rose gardens and Forest Park over the summer.

The theme lives. All I can say is WOW!!! I would love to be that young, full of energy, invincible, full of innocence & the naivety of youth again. "That was wild" followed by "might not have been the best time to visit" was almost as good as the "some girl" reference after visiting the tomb of Eva "Evita" Peron in Buenos Aires. I live in Tacoma, Washington and love Portland...well the Portland of my memories. This is a hard time for a lot of our cities and Portland and Seattle are two of them. Sad to see Portland looking like it does, but I have confidence that Portland will recover to it’s former funky and beautiful self. It’s a beautiful city, thank you for the respect you’ve shown. It’s been a HARD year, it was heartbreaking to see what was happening down there with the riots etc. Cannon Beach is one of my favourite places on the planet. Here’s to brighter days ahead!

I hope you’re headed to Washington! Lots and lots of good coffee for Kara 💕 Good coffee spots in WA: Slate Coffee Roasters La Marzocco Milstead & Co. Narrative Coffee Also you MUST go to the San Juan Islands in WA! Absolutely gorgeous ferry from Anacortes to the islands and beautiful scenery! Rent Susie’s Mopeds! The Washington Coast isn’t as nice as the Oregon Coast - except Cape Flattery is really cool. If you want a super fun experience go to the Olympic Game Farm in Sequim. It’s a drive through, feed the animals zoo. Also Diablo Lake is an absolute MUST! If you want a fun “we stayed here” video - hike up Mount Pilchuck and stay in the fire look out at the very top. It’s STUNNING! Or the “Rolling Huts” in Winthrop, they’re designed by a famous architect group in Seattle called Olson Kundig. I’ve got plenty of where that came from - washington is a beautiful state!

Thank you for treating Portland with a delicate touch. With the months of protests, looting, etc. it's not a vacation destination right now. Well, except for all of the tenters everywhere. So happy you enjoyed the Oregon coast 😀!

My eyes literally welled up with tears when you were talking about Portland. I am a born and raised Oregon native and Portland has always been weird but beautiful. I was one of those on Instagram telling you to move along. Portland is just.....sad right now. Gone are the days of our beautiful downtown.

As a native Oregonian, it makes me so happy to see tourists enjoying the Pacific NW for the first time! I forget sometimes how lucky I am to live here. :) So glad you were able to see so many beautiful places on your trip through here. And thanks for taking the time to understand current Portland on a deeper basis (not just at-a-glance). As a non-Portlander, I tend to direct out-of-staters to places outside the city/metro area anyway. The coast, Cascades, and the gorge are some of the best places to really see Oregon (and not just Portland)! P.S. SO GLAD you guys pronounced "Oregon" correctly!!! I'm proud of you. xD

Hey Kara and Nate, neck gaiters/buffs are not good replacements for masks, they don't offer the same protection and let droplets pass through much more easily. I'm sure they're ok for outdoor settings, but hope when you're indoors you use proper masks (like Nate was wearing inside the lodge at the start of the video). Just looking out for your own safety!

The Oregon coastline is literally one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to! Glad y'all finally made it! Cheers. :)

I was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest. Both Washington and Oregon states. I now live in Florida, but I really enjoyed seeing you there. Portland is a wonderful city, but it is going through a rough time now. I hope you take the time to return there some day when life is better. But I am really glad you got to enjoy the beauty that surrounds it and you have been visiting some of my favorite places like the Columbia Gorge and Cannon Beach. So thank you for the videos of a place that I love and is dear to my heart.
