Watcher Respond to the Backlash
Watcher is a channel run by Ryan Bergara, Shane Madej, and Steven Lim, formerly of Buzzfeed. They've been highly successful with their series like Ghost Files, Puppet History, and Dish Granted - but now they've received backlash for their controversial decision to leave youtube to start their own streaming service. After receiving tons of backlash, Ryan, Shane, and Steven released a video responding and apologising. But is it good enough?

I’m still really uncomfortable with what Sara said on Tumblr. Paying your bills when you live in an McMansion in LA is very different to paying your bills when you rent a one bedroom flat earning minimum wage. That is surviving. They are not surviving - they are living very luxurious lives. And expecting those in worse financial situations than you to fund your life is really off.

We don't know that actually. Their Patreon grew by a couple thousand during all of this so we don't know that a lot of people didn't sign up. However, this has changed things between them & their audience. Even for those who want to forgive them- they still have questions. Many believe they have grown the company too quickly. They hired a lot of friends and family & people suspect they want to pay them more than the average company would. Which is all good when it's sustainable. If you look on Hulu right now, their old Buzzfeed Unsolved series is on there. It used to be Prime too. Why can't they do something like that with Ghost Files/Mystery Files to help fund them? (Sigh) I hope their channel succeeds & trust between them & the fans is restored. It's going to take time though.

I mean, why would it matter if the apology is good enough or not? Except for people with parasocial relations with their imaginary friends Ryan, Shane and Stephen, at the end of the day, what matters is that the content is going to be available. People take things to a personal level that ends up working against them. If you were angry that they left, you can a) stay angry and still not have the content to uphold some ideal, or because your special friends didn't love you enough or b) be pragmatic and continue watching. For me, it's b. I like the mystery files.

I think they also dont see that while a lot of people 'can' afford 5+ dollars a month, since its a subscription its an ongoing expense and one which doesnt relate to food or necessities. Plus people are already paying for too many streaming platforms. I think the big issue here is that they are now so out of touch with their viewers that they are trying to mantain a lifestyle/production that almost all their viewers couldn't even imagine to be attainable. They also scaled up too much without taking into account their viewers. KZfaq expenses shouldnt scale at that rate.

I’ll keep watching there stuff free on YT, but they have still lost me as a supporter in other ways. I’m glad they backtracked, but I’m not fooled into believing it was out of a genuine care for the fans who made them. They were just smart enough to realize that the people as a whole were against them, and their new venture was going to fail. This was not a minor mistake, or misunderstanding. This took months, maybe years of planning, they had to think about what was happening every step of the way. Surely they thought about how this would impact the fans. They fully intended to remove all content, and make us pay to get it back. It just didn’t work out for them, so they did what the could to save face, and save their business.

Steven's show is plain stupid, out of touch and not matching of the current times. Meaning no one who can barely even can feed themselves 1 meal a day, would want to watch a rich stuck up person go to expensive trips and eating stupidly lavish expensive food on their dime. Very out of touch show. He should of considered a show to match the times. Why else travel food vlogs like Mark Wiens and Sonny are super popular? No consideration or planning for their Patreon. Being unclear about whether their KZfaq content was going to disappear completely. Like, it's not just the announcement that's the issue, but the complete lack of planning for the impact on viewers. A fucking McDonald's happy meal! Hell everytime I see something that is like 100, I am like 'dam I wish I could afford that' I can barely get by as it is, meanwhile one of these dudes has a tesla (don't know which one) like come on. I personally think their apology video was nothing more than a good apology video. They saw the writing on the wall and knew they’d be bankrupt if they didn’t fix shit. But they didn’t address a LOT of the issues that people had. They say they’re struggling to pay their employees a fair livable wage. But Steven Lim drives a Tesla and Shane’s wife owns expensive handbags. So maybe they need a pay cut. They also didn’t address how Shane’s wife and one of the employees decided to defend something the boys themselves ended up walking back. Lastly they completely ignored people saying that they don’t watch for the production value they watch for the personalities and the vibes. But the boys wants to keep the production value high because it’s what THEY want. They’re asking us to foot the bill so they can make what THEY want and live how THEY want while ignoring what content we actually want. It’s a hollow apology. It was well done sure. But what did it really mean

I’ve been a fan of Shane and Ryan for almost 10 years and it was upsetting they were gonna throw away all of us fans like we’re nothing. As much as I enjoy watching Shane and Ryan, idk if I’m going to resubscribe. I feel like they only backtracked on their subscription only content because they were forced to. There were so many other options they could’ve done to make some extra money for the company, so I have a hard time believing that they did it out of desperation. I seen someone say they could’ve started a sticker club where they send out different stickers each month. Which is a way better idea and it would’ve cost them a lot less than making a streaming platform. I think it was all about ego and greed. I think it’s still possible they are struggling to pay all of their employees but that’s their fault not the fans. They shouldn’t have hired 25 people. Not long before they made the announcement they had hired two of Steven’s friends so they could remake a show they did together for buzzfeed. If they were struggling to pay the employees they already had then why hire 2 more people for a show where 3 of them go eat really expensive food? And if they were struggling so bad then why waste money on making a streaming platform? That’s far from cheap and now it’s just something else they have to keep paying for every month just to keep it going. Makes no sense. If their business really is struggling then they need to cut back on costs and that means they need to put someone else in charge of the finances and budgets for each show because whoever has been running things is horrible at their job. And there’s no reason why ghost files should be costing 100’s of thousands of dollars. That’s just insane to me. Garrett watts and Andrew make the same type of videos themselves and the quality is great. Even for ghost adventures on discovery+ they don’t take a whole film crew with them while they investigate. The only time they have a film crew is when they initially go look at the place through the day. Other than that they set cameras up around the place and then carry their own cameras. That makes a lot more sense rather than spending 100’s of thousands of dollars.
@anirose25
@anirose25 4 ай бұрын
Exactly! I love watching Garrett and Andrew. It’s literally just the two of them creating the content nothing else. It’s still pretty good quality and it’s funny and awesome. They don’t pay 60 people to edit, they spend time in Washington a lot so to cut some costs they do a lot of haunted places there or in LA. Garrett also makes other content. They’re proof that you don’t need a million people to make something good. I love both channels content because it’s funny and entertaining not because you used a 3k camera to shoot it on with a huge crew. They could cut down costs on a lot of places. For starters, we don’t care about Steven eating expensive food! If they still wanted to do that they could make one of those videos once every 3-4 months as opposed to 7-10 a year that costs thousands to produce in travel costs and paying for the food and crew. I’ll defiantly be watching Garrett more than them now

So many people were praising the “apology” when it seemed fairly apparent to me that was the bare minimum they needed to do to not go down with the ship they sank themselves. I’m not saying they don’t deserve a second chance but only time and further actions will tell if they can grow from this decision. Fans are going to be extremely wary of them now, some have left for good but I do think they have a chance to listen, learn and move past this if they want to. The fact they never once dipped into the incredible resource that is their fans to get hard data, opinions and what else from them before blindsiding them with this decision is bonkers, the whole thing screams of being out of their depth and bad business management internally.

As a long time fan! I am ok with this apology and accept it. When I initially saw this, I was wondering why they chose to do something so extreme when more successful models like dropout have worked. Its a big breach of trust and will color what they do in the future. Accepting the apology is totally up to ones own opinions so I get if others don't. Im also curious. For those who feel like the apology isn't genuine or people shouldn't be happy with it, what could have been done differently? For me, this whole situation has left me feeling more jaded towards watcher and is leading me to rethink occasions where I didnt quite like their humor or shows. More so, I feel like all the complaints about them being bigger than they can manage, taking on unnessisarily expensive shows, and mislabeling high quality with tv. These critiaues all still stand for me. I accept the apology because they changed up the immediate concern. But until I see sustained action towards listening to fans and better management of financial stuff (or just. Not hearing of it again), I have no additional measure of how genuine it is. That being said, i take the initial action as a sign that it is genuine. This could change as watcher continues tho.

honestly for me it's wasn't even that I can't afford $6/month, it's that I only really watch one series they make, and a monthly subscription for just that doesn't make sense to me. I also worried about their focus on production value. like the draw for me (at least in the videos of theirs i do watch, idk about the other series they have) was that it felt like 2 dudes goofing around and having fun. amping up the production value seems like it would make it feel less authentic 🤷‍♂️ The other thought I had when I first saw the initial announcement was "why not make a patreon?" The discourse around the announcement was how I found out they *did*, they just didn't really seem to promote it? idk I think they really fumbled this whole situation. I've been reading a lot of comments about this situation over the last few days. Quite a few different perspectives, all with good points. I understand them wanting to leave KZfaq, to create the content they want (production value and not beholden to sponsers). But, they had such poor execution. As a business, yes they do want to make money, but part of that is considering the fans (and the strong parasocial relationship). They were out of touch with the cost of things, especially for their international fans. And so many people took this as a personal betrayal as they have cultivated (purposefully or not) a reputation of being the every-man, eat-the-rich, just hanging out with 2 friends, kind of content (fanning the flames of that parasociality). The fact of the matter is, they are a business and made the smart business move of listening to the fans' feedback, whether this was for money or if they genuinely feel bad. People certianly have a right to have a bad taste in their mouth about this. Personally, I can't say i felt upset, just bewildered at the foolish move when there were so many better ways to do this without alienating the fans.

I am certainly not going to pretend it couldn't have been much worse, but I also think they apologized because they really had no choice. They were hemorrhaging followers and fans and it would have been worse for their careers to not do exactly what they did. I feel some people who feel this apology is perfect and have completely forgiven them just desperately want to preserve their parasocial relationships with Ryan and (especially) Shane.

I do accept their apology. But it doesn't erase the greed that was implemented. It's like they didn't think of their plan, thoroughly and I do worry for their future because it seems they are unable to recognize that they are mishandling their finances. They have such short terms goals that long term. It's up in the air. I do hope things work out for them. But they really need a financial expert since it feels like they are overspending on either themselves, their staff or material things. Not Watcher TV.

I feel people are being dramatic. I was upset too but feeling “abandoned” is not a healthy response to any KZfaqr, celebrity, etc. making a career change that you don’t like.
@dreamlandnightmare

For most, I think it was less the feeling of being "abandoned" and more the elitist, condescending attitude in the "Goodbye" video, that "anyone can afford it", while they drive Teslas, rent $55,000 wedding venues, and spend $1000 on meals. Also off-putting that they automatically expected their audience to pay as much as a Netflix subscription just for a handful of goofy videos a month when the content had always been 100% free. None of their audience ever asked for fancier production values. They just come off as moneygrubbing schmucks.

@@dreamlandnightmareAgain, not healthy. Being an out of touch rich person is just par for the course for these people! Thinking that these guys or Taylor Swift or any celebrity is gonna have your best interest at heart or even understand how a regular person lives is silly! Most of these people came from upper middle class families who had a safety net while they lived in LA to work for nothing at Buzzfeed. They were always like this. I wasn’t gonna pay for their platform but as a consumer I let them know I didn’t like their choice and that I wouldn’t follow them and they course corrected. One of the few good things about capitalism is we can influence these things with our dollar! But the attacks I have seen on these guys is out of line. People were acting like they are pedos!

It was a good apology, I appreciate the honesty and their willingness to admit fault along with the willingness to roll back the bad change. That said, ya can't just put the toothpaste back in the tube. It's gonna be a bit uncomfortable watching new content from them for a good while at least.

Logan/Observe made a video about them saying goodbye to KZfaq, he said that from their first tier of patron alone they earn about 90k dollars. That alone is a lot of money. Instead of continuing their lavish living, maybe they should cut back on some of the staff, and maybe also not buy such expensive things.

Their apology showed they listened to the audience and they basically made their content fully free again. I don't know what else people wanted them to do. I mean people can decide to stay mad but personally nothing is getting taken away from me anymore so I don't see a reason to stay mad 🤷‍♀️ I don't believe in "one strike and you're out". I've certainly made bad decisions in my career and I'm grateful people at least gave me a shot to prove I could be better. They didn't kill puppies. They had a dumb business idea.

Okay. My question is this. Who isn’t getting “paid fairly”? Who isn’t making a “living wage”, as Shane’s wife posted on IG? They’re making themselves sound like starving artists whose fans have been cheating them and their employees out of being able to make rent…meanwhile their shoes ALONE cost more than my flat?? WATCHER PLEASE EXPLAIN. Like, how are you so screwed financially that you can’t make a “survivable living”? I’m not even going to mention the wedding stuff I’ve seen people discussing, Steven’s gold plated food series, Ryan’s massive sneaker collection… Oops. I just mentioned it. This apology wasn’t borne of humility. It was the result of desperation. They’re out of touch with us common folk. What can I say, maybe I’m just a petty bitch. Edited: that free subscription to their Patreon members? It’s good for 3 months. I know because we are members of their Patreon. After that, we pay full price. Despite the fact that we’d still be paying for the Patreon because we’re paid up through the end of the year. So we’d get free through the summer and after that, we the Patreons can also eff off with the rest of the poors. I’d love to be positive about something for once. Alas, I cannot. This was a wake up call. I now know what Watcher thinks of its fans. Thank you for the cat break. Always appreciated. (There’s the positive ❤)

They've ruined the appeal of what drew me to them with the first video. They may have said all the right things with honeyed words in this latest apology video and made changes that would have been 1000000% accepted if they had gone that route in the first place, but the damage is done for me personally and I cannot see them in the same light. To me, the move was based on greed and nothing more. I cannot see it any other way when you factor in *everything*. The sources of revenue they were already making was far more than just a youtube channel relying on ads and sponsors. They HAVE a patreon, a very successful one at that. They have merch. They do shows. But they wanted *more*. More from the people who were already giving them money monthly as well. It's also fine to live a lavish lifestyle when you are successful I have no issue with that. It's when you say stuff like "Without this paid for subscription, Watcher will be no more ):" and watching how they can suddenly and very quickly pull back on how they were RELYING on this for survival to "Oh no wait, hang on-" that money wasn't as big of an issue as what they wanted us to believe. It was only seeing how fast they were losing support, how fast they were losing money from their PATREONS, that was IMO what made them change their view. They went into damage mode like any company would because if they didn't do this they were going to crash and burn and lose a LOT. I know many fans are going to happily continue to watch them. I'm glad that they are able to see the best in them all, truly believe that they want whats best and this was just a simple mistake. I can't be one of them though.
