I make HAND CUT cove moulding on the underside of this vanity table, and finish it up! See the final product here!
In the final video of this series where I build a 5-drawer vanity table with only hand tools, I am cutting the moulding for the top with my hand-made moulding plane.
I have a video about that plane here: • I made a moulding plan...
I might even make a more detailed video in the future. We'll see.
For the paint, it's a satin finish paint from the big-box. I sanded between coats and did my best to make it look good.
In the end, it's not perfect, and that's ok! I love it. Unless you look really close, you don't see the tiny mistakes. All that said, this was quite a step out of the box for me, what with the lathe, the moulding, the drawers, etc. Anyway, this was a blast!
Thanks for watching!
Watch me turn the legs on a pole lathe: • Turning a Desk Leg on ...
Build the pole lathe: • Spring Pole Lathe FULL...

Great craftsmanship, thanks. I use both power and hand tools but hand tools, especially planes, are more fun.

Beautifully finished, shame I was hoping to see how you trimmed the drawers to fit, but at least I see they smoothly open & close. All together fabulous. Can't wait to see what your next project will be !

This was a fun project to watch! Great result and your attention to technique is great to see. I'm finishing my first table for my daughter and decided to use buttons to attach the top. I've never seen the pocket holes like that.

Thanks and congrats on your own project! Buttons are a great way to go, for sure! I didn’t have a lot of clearance to do buttons, but I’ve used them a lot on other projects. These pocket holes are rather common on old furniture; I first saw them on the Renaissance woodworker and also on mortise and tenon magazine.

Amazing work! Your pocket hole technique was really cool as was how you did the moulding. Brilliant job!

I appreciate it! I’ve seen the Renaissance woodworker and mortise and tenon magazine talk about pocket holes in antique furniture, so I went with that!

Really fantastic work, Andrew! Beautiful desk! 😃 I hope your daughter loves it! Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊 BTW, don't worry if I don't comment in the next video(s)... I'm going to travel today and the internet is horrible at my parent's farm. But, well... I'm taking 5 quadcopters ("drones") with me. 😂

It's too bad you don't have one of those sweet gimlet bits that RWW talked about to do the pocket hole all in one pass. Neat project. I enjoyed seeing it to the end. Hope you're happy with the outcome.

Ah true! This was easy enough though. I saw mortise and tenon magazine do it this way so that is why I thought of this. Thanks for watching!!

Parabéns pelo trabalho! Ficou muito bonita, há delicadeza nos detalhes como puxadores, as pernas da mesa, as gavetinhas graciosas, a cor. Não deixa nada há desejar para uma mesa vendida em grandes lojas. Linda mesma!

Nice project! Your work is very inspiring. Just wish you'd mention the names of the tools you're working -- not necessarily the brands, but the type of tools you're using. I'm only beginning woodworking, and for instance it would help a lot if I knew what type of planes you're using . At the moment my biggest problem and source of frustation with woodworking is the realization that pretty much nothing is straight, plumb or square in the world lol and so my next goal is to get some good planes. Anyway, great job, the moulding plane and lathe were especially nice. Also, I noticed you used the same finished product reveal music that you used in the cabinet video, really like it and it works pretty well as a reveal music :)
@TheHandToolery
@TheHandToolery 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I try to keep that music to stay consistent :) I hadn’t thought about giving that info and maybe I can go back and re-release videos with some other type of commentary. Thanks for the suggestion! Let me know if I can help you get going!
@Kurisuto321

@@TheHandToolery Yeah I think that'd be nice to have! I mean, I'm sure most of your viewers don't need or want that info, but for those of us beginning, knowing what those tools are AND seeing them used in an actual project would be perfect (as opposed to a video abstractly presenting e.g. the different types of planes). And thanks for offering your help! Yeah actually I'd like to know the names and the difference between the planes you're using around 0:30 and 1:00. And more generally, what kind of plane would you recommend to a beginning woodworker, a versatile one if possible? (as in, I mainly want to square the edges of my pieces, but it'd be great if I could use it to flatten moderately large surfaces)
@TheHandToolery
@TheHandToolery 3 жыл бұрын
At :30 I’m using a #8 joiner plane to get the edges of the boards straight for glue up. At 1:00 I’m using a 4 1/2 smoother to give a nice surface on the face of the board. Not the final surface but getting there.
@TheHandToolery
@TheHandToolery 3 жыл бұрын
About a plane recommendation, definitely a #5. It has some length, which makes jointing easier and it can do a bit of smoothing. I use my #5 most of all my planes.
@Kurisuto321
@Kurisuto321 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheHandToolery I see, thanks! One last question if I may: you said that it's not the final surface yet, so I gather that even a good smoother can't get a surface to finish-ready levels? What grain of sandpaper do you use for final surfacing?
