Miss Nancy's Day Off

Miss Nancy's Day Off

Күн бұрын

Today I am preparing the campervan after the winter months for a trip! There are plenty of unpleasant surprises in store for me including mould and a broken heater, and I can see it will take a lot of work to get things perfect. I also try to make some new DIY window blinds with semi-successful results 🤣
Miss Nancy only turns up for the food as she believes her role is not that of DIY enthusiast but star and she gets her beauty sleep for her next lead role.
If you have a Chinese diesel heater that needs troubleshooting this is a helpful group: / 212813887001237
A little about us: I adopted my ex-racing greyhound Miss Nancy three years ago, it was a massive learning curve for both of us and we have become the best of friends who love going on outdoor adventures, wild swims, van camping and finding vegan food out and about! We make videos showing what it’s like to have a greyhound as a pet, the beautiful outdoors, vanlife, and life with a greyhound!
When we aren’t making videos I am a jeweller and illustrator, you can check out my work here: www.victoriagr...
My new website with greyhound info and illustrations: www.MissNancys...
Thanks to everyone who watches likes and subscribes we appreciate your support ❤️

You've got your work cut out Tori. You're doing a great job. As others have said in the comments please throw away the wooden spoon and storage boxes. Air flow in key to your damp problem so any bit of ventilation will help. I'm sorry Miss Nancy gets anxious in the van, it must be difficult for you. She looked gorgeous asleep with her dreams. Thank you for the lovely update.

Winter in Cornwall is wet! Mould is unavoidable tori. One thing I put on my van is the window rain deflectors. You can then wind both windows down slightly and get some airflow through which defo helps slow down the mould. Lovin the vids x

If you don't use your camper during the winter get some large plastic bowls and fill them with salt. The salt will absorb the damp moist air and prevent mould building up. Alternatiely you can use a dehumidifier if you havea power source.

Kudos to you for taking all that damage in your stride without drama . I can’t guarantee it would’ve worked , but a sock full of a good quality cat litter left in your van would probably help as it soaks up the moisture in the air ( yes that is a thing if you look it up 😂 )

Ventilation and insulation help stop condensation that's causing your mould problems. I have the same van as yours but only get condensation in the cab due to the single glazed windows. My cab and living space are separated by a curtain and my roof vent gives permanent ventilation. Rear window is caravan style double glazed with a built in blind. As much as the internal van metal is covered with carpet or insulation and cladding, any warm surface will stop condensation forming. Running a heater and ventilating the van occasionally when it's laid up will help. Great videos 😊

Airflow is the key to a mould free van. There is a little white dehumidifier that holds a blue tablet that captures moisture really well. Cost was about £10 but I had one in my MX-5 over winter. A portable steamer kills the fungus and bacteria in soft furnishings. £15-20. Anti mould bathroom paint works a treat too.

Mold, oh my favorite.. We had it in shower room that was ventilated well on ceiling which was just plaster board with emulsion over it and in our van. Easy fix and protection, but not every one likes Bleach... Do not use cheap bleach, we use Domestos, wear gloves, put on with sponge or paint brush NEAT, do not water down. Leave for hour or 90 mins, clean off with sponge and dry with cloth, it removes mold and leave layer of protection that stops mold coming back on regular basis, it works on every surface,. We used pvc cladding in sleeping area of our van when converting, its easy to keep clean and fix on and stays warm... Our main issue was windows steaming up at night , even with vent in roof, but found by wiping shaving foam on windows neat, and wiping off after 39 mins with paper towel until dry, it stops misting up and dampness.. Wikcer baskets, put bleach in spray bottle water down 50% bleach/50% water, mist basket and let dry, wipe off.. Domestos I found became my best friend, you just have to ventilate when doing it and it really works , even in houses.. Cheap bleach does not work. Mold Mildew, being breathed in causes Interstitial lung diseases... Great you have water tablets, bacteria can not be seen, and mold is only seen when it progressed to dangerous levels.. I worked respiratory medicine, so if you use Domestos, make sure you do it with ventilation, , its kills an dprotects, I know its harsh , but beter than any ear nose lung disease that mold and mildew cause.. have a good trip Tori and the four legged flyer

Thank for this it definitely sounds worth a try! I don’t like bleach in general but if it’s a one off thing could be good, if the smell fades as it makes me feel sick. I think you can get pots of crystals that help stop condensation! Talking of Mold Please Please dont use the wooden spoon, just burn it! Ive heard that if you put a small block of Silver in you're water tank it keeps it fresh! As as for Nancy not liking living in the van, you could live in a bin liner and she would would be okay as long as she has You! The effectiveness of keeping the cold out for a blind is it's ability to eliminate circulation from the window glass into the interior. Make sure that the material is pulled tight to the sidewalls and the bottom. Then no circulation can take place. Making it tight to the top helps but it is not as critical as the sides and bottom. Just don't allow air circulation from the window surface to the inside to occur. It is not a particularly thick material but it will insulate much better than plain glass but its effectiveness depends on the glass being sealed off.

Great video Tori. 5' 10" gosh you and Miss Nancy could do catwalks! It would be interesting to see the conversion of a Yeti. That is if it's possible to sleep in one if your 5' 10" 🤔. Of course the barrier to entry is perhaps less with a vehicle like that then investing in a much larger van. So I imagine people would be interested in a Yeti conversion has it might fuel their enthusiasm and imagination for a weekend getaway vehicle. I imagine you'd get a lot of interest from viewers. In my caravan the is always a battle with mould but the cheapest best option is a good dehumidifier. For a much smaller space such as the van versus buildings a USB powered dehumidifier would definitely work, it would be helpful to get one with her reliable humidity indicator so you can keep an eye on the humidity. Generally speaking below 70% humidity you begin to go into a safer territory. At 60% humidity you're pretty safe from mould. Good luck with your travels.

@@missnancysdayoff I can really see you and Miss Nancy doing a boho fashion event. 👌 do the front seats in the yeti fold all the way forward or right down? You could then rest your feet on the dashboard.🤭 one idea I have to overcome the length limitation of some vehicles is to see whether it's possible to put a couple of mount points diagonally in the car to allow you to suspend a hammock. The diagonal length of course would give you a few extra inches. But I had visions of the hammock coming loose and dropping me on the floor. 🙃😵😆 but I think a hammock would be good for space saving as it could be taken down during the day to allow you to utilize the space more efficiently. No I don't think that is weird at all. You have a keen sense of smell and so when the humidity dropped to 50% you could feel the air was just healthier to breathe. Really useful ability. 🙂

@Melatiah 🤣 I do think Miss Nancy is the Super model of dogs I must admit, I know I am biased but still 🙈 I don’t think it does I am going to check it out, I think all the seats come out but then it would look a bit obvious maybe with my feet there, would give plenty of space though! I was thinking if you put a divider behind the front seats that is the most subtle approach but that does limit the space a lot. Love the idea of a hammock, can one actually sleep in one? They look a bit like instruments of torture. I do have a. Hammock , unused I might add, so maybe `I can give it a try 🤣 I’m not sharing it with Miss Nancy though!

@@missnancysdayoff Aww Miss Nancy does have the supermodel walk for sure! 😍 I have wondered about how comfortable a hammock is. I quite enjoy sleeping on my side and can't see how that can be done in a hammock without being a contortionist 😆. You and Miss Nancy in the hammock that would be a sight, surely the cutest thing ever. 😄 The divider idea certainly would enhance privacy. I remember my sister used to sleep on the back seats of VW Polo at festivals. She is 5' 8' but then she did like to curl up like a little hamster 🤭 so space didn't seem to be an issue.

Maybe I can change again 🧐

I think they loved their racing and associated getting into a vehicle with going racing. Just a thought, where does Miss Nancy travel in your van? I made a point of ours travelling on the floor or on a large bench seat behind the driver in our camper, that way they are very stable and can find things to brace against when cornering and braking if neccessary. Good luck with your travels and good on you for promoting the adoption of retired greyhounds - they are just the best!

oh that is so lovely, and amazing they all liked driving! I have wondered if the van reminds Miss Nancy f her racing days but that those are not good memories for her 😭 Maybe she just gets car sick too but I think it;s more than that. Well she has tried quite a few positions including in the floor behind the seats, hated all of them right now she is on the seat beside me that I have extended for her. problem with the back is she keeps trying to jump on on the bed so I can’t drive 😖 so I let her go in the front now as she would rather but she doesn’t like that either, I don’t know what’s best really! Thank you so much, they really are and I hope new people will see Miss Nancy and think so too ❤️

@johngibson3837 well because it’s a high bed at the back she could come flying off if I had to brake suddenly. Also because she hates driving I thought it might be better to have her travel somewhere else so the back of the van was a safe space. I could be wrong!

I have portable vacuum cleaner envy! Gadget John recently posted a fab "Simple & Effective Campervan Draught Solutions" tips video. I'm planning upon implementing the closed cell self-adhesive rubber strip trick that he uses at the base of his sliding door. I don't think that I could overnight in a car, I only just fit in my bed in my Renault Master van (my bed is in the same position as yours). I think that you could do with installing some of those plastic vent holes into you cupboards to aid airflow. Vinegar (acetic acid) is great against mold, as mold doesn't like acidic environments. I have a deck hatch (like you'd find on a boat) for my skylight, which I leave open about 5-10mm all year around when I'm not in the van, this seems to help with mold issues (so far). I'm looking forward to seeing your adventure!

Those baskets look like some kind of woven palm leaves or reeds or something, could even be bamboo stem leaves. It also looks like they've absorbed moisture from the air at some point when you were using the van and that's probably what caused them to rot as in colder months that water won't evaporate and just go stagnant.
@missnancysdayoff

maybe they are, I was wondering if I could leave them in a hot room to dry out or something? not ideal in the van sadly
@theKNI

@@missnancysdayoff You probably could dry them out but not knowing what kind of mould they produced you might be best not keeping anything food related in them. Now that I think about it you should probably bin that manky spoon too 😂 Wooden spoons should be washed and dried thoroughly but the part that most people don't usually know about is that you're also supposed to oil them every 6 months or so to keep the grime out of the pores in the wood. Linseed, tung, or walnut oil are ideal but not rapeseed, olive etc. (I'm a woodworker 😝)

@@missnancysdayoff Using it could be risky no matter what you do to clean it but I'll do a full break down on cleaning it below for you. Who knows what kind of mould that is though. Personally I'd clean it but only keep it as an ornament and get a new one. 1. Put it in boiling water for 30 mins and dry it off with a towel. 2. Use a 1:1 vinegar and water solution to scrub it by hand. Dry it with your towel again then let it air dry. 3. Apply some walnut oil, linseed oil or tung oil liberally, let it soak in for a few hours then wipe off any excess with kitchen roll. It'll then harden and seal the wood. 4. Reapply oil every 6 months or so. 5. Always wash by hand, never in a dishwasher. If it feels fuzzy to the touch after all that you can use sandpaper to smooth it then wash the sawdust off. (If you use cold pressed walnut oil you can also cook with that for some healthy vegan fats, and omega 3 😉It should be available in any supermarket. Obviously not good if you have a nut allergy though, in which case use one of the others. Just Google where to buy them.) Hope that helps. If nothing else it gives you some insight into just how mad I must be to care so much about wooden things. 😅

Oh no... it makes sense that it would get mouldy, but even so. It's what happens in the south west due to the higher humidity. Dare you check behind the walls ? Perhaps that's the reason vanlifers overwinter in Spain. 14.1V is decent charge for the battery, so it's nice to know it works in winter with the panels not optimised 👍 Miss Nancy needs to associate vans with happy times, so try giving her a food toy like a Kong, stuffed with food when you're driving ? Desensitisation.

In the end she gets to anxious even to eat which isn’t like her at all! Charming video, thanks for sharing. No being rude but the van is the older side and maybe getting some water ingress, probably from the sliding door because the mould was in this area. Maybe use some vasoline on the door seal?. As for car camping I have done it twice. Once at kingly vale and then at Stonehenge. It’s no van but I enjoyed it. I plan to do more this year.
