Today we're taking a look at two popular sling packs and doing a direct compare and contrast between them. The tried and true Maxpedition Sitka Gearslinger and the up and coming Vanquest Javelin VSlinger. Both are great packs, however the Javelin suits me better, check out the video to see why.

I've been a maxpedition fan for years. But now I see something that has much better features. Seams you convinced me to make a move to something way better. Thank you for your service in helping me find something I know I will love to spend my hard earned money on. I believe it will last for twenty years and still look fantastic in 20 years

Your sitka still looks more brandnew than your javelin. Love to have both slingers too. Great comparison video you made here, very thorough and straight to the point. Thanks!

I have the sitka that I use for my edc for work. I don't really use it for more than a book to read on the bus, rain jacket and a small umbrella, notebook, headphones, pens, etc.. Maybe a total of 10lbs. It doesn't have as many organizational options as the javelin, but it's still a great pack. If I had to purchase one or the other again, I probably would have gone with the javelin, because of the organization extras, but I'm still very happy with the sitka.

I like the sitka's simplicity. Its just a sling bag, the javelin overdid it. Also, which came first? Because one clearly copied the other.

These bags are ridiculous. I own (present tense) the Sitka and used it EDC for over a year. I considered getting the Javelin but decided against it for the same reason that I retired my Sitka in favor of a two strap backpack (Maxpedition Falcon II). A single strap bag just isn't comfortable for any kind of real duration with more than 10 or 15 pounds. Why in the world did I pay over $100 for a bag that is built with the quality to hold well over 70 pounds when I cannot comfortable carry half that? I wore the bag daily for a year. It was SUPER convenient, and it was very easy to get at my belongings in urban and suburban environments. It was easy to wear while riding a motorcycle. The bag carried everything I really needed, and I think I never used more than two pieces of the molle webbing in that time (I did use the Y compression strap and draw string drink container regularly). I started getting back spasms on one side of my back. I stopped using this bag and the spasms went away. A year later I wore the Sitka for a two days and the spasms returned (I'm very fit and part of my regular usage included a 3 mile run with elevation changes). I had always heard that 30 pounds is the commonly accepted weight limit for a frameless (two strap) backpack. I found this to be very true with the Sitka and found that about 15 pounds was the most I would want to keep in the bag. With weight like that the bulk of the weight would sit at the small of my back and twist my torso slightly while running/hiking distance. Nope, I didn't regularly store more than about 5 pounds in the bag, but on occasion much more would go in there. So, why get a bag with dozens of molle attachment points and compression straps everywhere and designed to be capable of holding 100 pounds or more, when comfortably, you're not going to want to carry the thing with much more than about 10% of this amount? I love the look of my Sitka (and I love the look of the Javelin, and really did strongly consider getting one). The Sitka just isn't comfortable to wear for extended periods of time or with any real weight in it, so, having it built out to hold a TON of stuff is just ridiculous.

Great review! I am planning to order a new pack at the end of the month and was planning on a Maxpedition Sitka or Malaga until now. The construction and hi-vis of the Javelin is much better in my opinion. I'll now be ordering a left shoulder version in a couple of weeks.

Great comparison, looks like Vanquest is putting out some really nice gear. I definitely will be considering them for future gear purchases. I almost bought the Envoy messenger bag for college based on your video. But, I ended up getting the Maxpedition Gleneagle messenger based on the size, the Envoy was just not big enough for a laptop, text books, notebooks, EDC items and everything else that I need to have with me at school.

I've been looking at getting a sling-pack. I'm liking that Javelin VSlinger. The lack of water bottle pouch can be remedied with a Maxpedition bottle holder (They have MOLLE webbing!). Thanks for the review Lee!

TGO, Great video! Thanks for the comparison. I am looking into getting a smaller single sling pack (jeez, I have 5 packs all different sizes and mfg.'s). I just want a simple, configurable, EDC pack that is not too small, but doesn't weigh as much as a Volkswagen. I've just recently discovered Vanquish and I'm quite impressed with their attention to detail and quality. I mean no disrespect to Maxpedition as I have some of their gear too, as well as 5.11, Mountain Smith, Jansport, Camelbak and others. Ok, I'm a gear nut, but it's videos like yours that I really appreciate because of your thoroughness and detail, you help us consumers make a better informed decision, which saves us money in the long run. Thanks again! I've subscribed and liked!

I have the Kodiak gearslinger because I need the extra size. Having said that if its the same level of quality it should be interesting to see what they have coming out in the future. A fleiger duffel would be what I want from them.

Great review and it looks like the JAVELIN V. SLING is a winner. Is the padding very comfortable wear when it's a heavy bag and how long is the smaller strap go?

Great review, I have a 5.11 Rush Moab 10 sling bag and like it ok. It has a great hook and loop pocket for my CCW. I didn't see you show a pocket like that on these packs, do they have one? Those dividers are really cool though.

Great review! I went with a more affordable sling bag to make sure I liked the style and it has worked great but they obviously designed it off the Sitka so the storage options are very limited. I, like most, stumbled across Vanquest via message boards and I am going to order the V Slinger. A bit of a bummer that both Vanquest and Maxpedition build their products in Taiwan and charge such high prices anyway but their products certainly look high quality.

+Lordbrega We live near the MCAGCC 29 Palms and came across a Marine selling a Mil Spec Camelbak 44 liter rucksack for $20. Used the sling bag for hiking a couple times but traditional rucksack was more conducive to the task. Still have the cheap knockoff for daily work bag.

yep - that Javelin is clearly superior - damn it. I don't think that this brand gets enough exposure, otherwise I'd have gone with it over the Kodiak gearslinger.... at least I only paid $126... Good review.

I've been interested in getting a Sitka, but... what kind of bottle gave you the problems? If the bottle pocket rentention sucks, I might be better served by the Javelin despite its loud velcro closures. I was planning to use standard 32oz nalgene bottle.

I am 6'3" with broad shoulders, one concern I didn't see addressed is the length of the strap. I use the Sitka with a Janus extension because the stock length of the strap is too short for comfort. How does the V Slinger strap compare in length? Can't tell you how many otherwise perfectly suitable packs I've passed on simply because they needed about another 2 or 3 inches of strap webbing.

I'll have to check for you. I think the strap extends pretty long, never had a problem wearing it even with heavy winter jackets.

I'm 6'3 and about 300 lbs with broad shoulders and chest. The main cross strap is plenty long. When I have it tightened to a comfortable length there is about 7 inches of slack. The other strap is significantly shorter. Granted, I'm a pretty thick guy, but I have it maxed out. Its a little tight but it really locks the bag down and helps to shift the weight from sitting on one shoulder so that it rides more on my torso. The strap is a little short for my liking but it is still very comfortable

For serious carry, single strap with significant weight makes no sense. For city convenience yes, not long distance hikes.
