Vantrue kindly sent me one of their N4 systems to install in my own car rather than giving away like I did with the last one! In this video I document a step-by-step procedure to hardwire in the dash cam. I'd like to say a massive thanks to Liverpool Auto Care for doing the install for me, and I'm glad I went to them as the problem we found was easily fixed.

I am a very fussy guy when it comes to my stuff, especially my vehicles. So I always do anything and everything to them to save taking them to the garage, because people just don't take pride in their work anymore, they do sloppy work, they are rough with vehicles, they are messy, etc. But after watching Lewis, and how respectful he is and how good of a job he done, I can say that he is a professional at what he does. Great job Lewis.

I never even thought of wiring it through the rubber seals round the doors either. I've got cables all over the place (and in the wrong places!) And not even installed the rear camera incase I damage something. Thanks Ashley and Lewis for a great video! You've motivated me to find a pro auto care shop to wire mine in!

Viewer Reminder: Always a good idea to test to see if the camera(s) work before routing and also with any supplied hardwire kits. Last thing you want to do it undo all the routing work after finding the kit was busted. More of an issue for people who have to rely on the kit rather than knowing how to fix it.

I am amazed that even your friend whom is a professional clearly understands what curtain airbags are, even mentions them in the video, and yet he wires the cable across it introducing a safety hazard in your car. Do not wire across a curtain airbag like this, it can prevent the airbag from properly going off, it can launch the cable into your face or rip the dashcam completely off your windshield and send it flying through your car. You've already had an accident, no need to add more possibilities of getting injured.

I still don't understand why dashcam makers are so keen on putting all the electronics into the spot behind the mirror, this formfactor is out of date. Surely now that we are getting these systems with multiple cameras it would be better to have the recorder/screen as a separate device that you plug the cameras into, like a small NVR? This way you could make the camera units very small and the cables running to them smaller. It would also mean that cameras could be changeable, so if I wanted a water proof camera for outside the car, or a wider field of view I could just swap them. If you made the recorder box a little larger you could add a 4 inch screen and a 2.5 inch SSD for storage, and record weeks of footage instead of hours.
@gordon861
@gordon861 3 жыл бұрын
@@Fazer_600 At the moment you are needing to run to the middle of the windscreen the power to run two cameras, the lcd and the power for CPU to compress the video/audio and write it to disk (and often the power to charge the built in battery/capacitor). If you have a third camera you also need to run that connection up there to do the same, this lead is often thicker to avoid any losses in the cable as it also has to carry power to the rear camera, so the camera could be much smaller. With my solution you would only need to run as much power as needed to power the camera all the hardwork would be handled by the recorder box. You would also move the bulky bits of the system to another location so you could run a 4 inch screen and even add an SSD for recording (microSD cards are too unreliable). If an insurance company wanted to build this into their 'black boxes' you could even run a data cable to the OBD2 port to read what the car was doing if/when it has an accident. But that may start to get complicated/expensive, better to just have the recording box that does it all for you. This solution would also mean that the same recorder could be used for cars, lorries, buses and motorcycles, so long as you could find somewhere dry. A cab driver could have the box difficult to access (under the bonnet?) so if they had a runner they couldn't just rip the camera off the screen and take the evidence with them.

@@gordon861 Another option would be for the car manufacturers to respond to the trend for dash cams by putting a USB port in the rearview mirror cluster/a piece of trim nearby. So many cars these days have a sensor cluster there anyway for auto-wipers and headlights, maybe a hands-free mic as well, so the cable run is done. Adding an extra power run plus a USB-C port up there would cost no more than a couple of quid at manufacture, but allow end-users to power a dash cam with a ~6 inch cable, rather than a 6 foot one. Potentially the same on the boot. To me, that should be the approach on even base models. Premium model cars by this point should have fully integrated recording systems. Throw a camera in that cluster, if you don't already have cameras everywhere (a la Tesla) (the sensor tech has more or less matured now, I wouldn't expect to see huge leaps in the sensors used over the lifetime of the car - unless they really skimped out in the first place), SSD based recording system integrated with the in-car entertainment. Integrate various other information (possibly beyond even what is available via OBD-II), such as acceleration/braking, indicator & lights status, speed, maybe the various driver-assistance tools in a modern vehicle. Of course, none of that helps those of us who can't afford a new car, in which case I definitely agree there'd be a market for your proposed design (if SSD prices didn't push unit prices too high). My car has a couple of cubby-holes just under the front footwells that would be perfect for housing such a system.

@@nowillnoway I've seen some cars with axillary circuits in the boot that are wired to the ignition, so they could also be used. But I totally agree, car manufacturers should be doing more, so many cars are starting to have cameras to detect speed limits and lanes there's really no reason these cameras couldn't be utilized as a dashcam. The only problem with this approach is privacy and how much information you want to make available that could be used against you should the police decide to go on a fishing expedition. At the moment, if you have an accident the footage may be available and it's also 'your footage' and you have control of the level of detail that is recorded. I like to have the choice of how much data is recorded My helmet cam does not have GPS and my dash cam doesn't record the footage with the speed readout on the image, this is a conscious decision by me not to make this information easily available. Should anyone want to calculate the speed it's possible from the footage but it'll require a lot more work and there will be an element of error in the calculation that could be argued should the need arise. I do, on occasion, allow my speed to creep a little high on the bike when conditions permit (most riders do, including the off duty police that I have discussed it with). The last thing you need is to be pulled over and the footage being seized and used as evidence because it has the numbers right there on the screen, I would rather make them prove the case than have my own footage dob me in. I think I've already heard of issues in the US where the argument is going along the lines of who owns the data that your car records and does the car company have the right to download and monetise the information when you go in for a service without your express agreement, or do the police need a warrant to take the data. Data tracking is just going to keep becoming a bigger problem as we go forward with more computing power added to cars.

I was thinking a similar thing for battery powered cams - None of my cameras even have displays - the cycliq fly 12 and fly 6 and the Drift Ghost X and Drift Ghost XL. All are bricks however because they have about 4 hours battery life... would be amazing if you could pack the battery and hardware separate to the camera sensor, and then just attach a much smaller item in your cockpit/to your helmet etc which is sensibly wired through to the hardrive/computer and battery.

Unfortunately I screwed up today installing my n4 today and wanted to save you all the trouble. I did a perfect install with hiding all cables neatly along with the hardwiring. The rear cam cord had several feet extra. Me being and idiot cut the excess wire to splice it back together. It was a usb c so unfortunately it had several little wires in it and I could not re connect the wire. I’ll have to buy a shorter usb c to usb c and redo the entire wire from back to front in the car. Painful. Other advice. When hardwiring, put the fuse that’s already in the footwell fuse box into the fuse connector, so the connector will appear to have 2. It took quite a bit of force for me to get it to work, but it did get in eventually. If vantrue is reading this I would love a new usbc to usbc lol.

In one of my parents car they had a system that would turn off the fuel pump after a mile or so. It was a hidden switch to disable it but if the car was stolen the car would get a little distance then start bleeping a warning at you, if you didn't hit the hidden switch the pump would switch off and you aren't going anywhere, the system would reset every time the car was turned off. Most car thieves would just abandon a car that stops in the middle of the road rather than try and work out what was wrong with it, it would also be far enough away that they couldn't threaten you so that you'll tell them how to restart the car.

With this configuration, it seems that the camera will shut down when the car is parked (unless it runs off an independent battery in the camera). Could you discuss "parking mode" installs. Also, is it an option to run the camera off it's own fuse by finding a space in the fuse box rather than piggy backing of an existing one?
@ProMilkshake
@ProMilkshake 3 жыл бұрын
On your second point. It isn't piggy backing off of another fuse. Instead it is running on its own fuse, but splits an existing fuse socket into two. The original fuse runs separately to the dashcam fuse. Both devices fused independently. It'd be far too difficult to run a new fuse from the fusebox, even if there's a free spot, as there would no way for the car to decide when to power the socket. You'd also need some kind of relay to trigger/switch the fuse on and off. I've ran the fuse socket splitter that Ashleys used for years, for dashcams, amplifier trigger wires and the such.

You can actually use an empty slot on some vehicles, as long as they have ignition power to them. However, you may also need a constant 12V which usually would be indicated by a yellow wire. If this is the case, the Camera will use the car battery for power and most will monitor the battery level and shut it off if it gets too low. In the scenario the camera doesn't have the yellow wire, the camera usually has an internal battery used for the parking mode.
@donsvideos1985

@@LukeGuitarSmith I never saw why they did not use the hardwire kit he brought. I saw that the kit supplied by vantrue was sensitive to what side the fuse got power on. That makes sense otherwise the lowe power cutoff relay could not work. If no power output was the reason the kit was scrapped might have been due to this very issue. But I'm just guessing.

I agree. The Vantrue instruction manual is useless. I tossed mine out too and just use common sense. To hardwire, all you have to do is to use ACC fuses so they power on your N4 when you turn on the ignition. To do that, I recommend piggybacking off of a ODB fuse, moonroof fuse, any fuse that powers accessories when engine is turned on. Use a voltage meter to measure which fuse gives you a voltage reading while the car is on and test it again when you turn off the engine to make sure there are no voltages going through. WHen both are confirmed, that's the one to use. THen it just a matter of making the connections and it's super easy. After that, you have to get creative to run the cables all over your car lol to the camera (both front and back).

He did a nice job, but I really do not enjoy the idea of pulling off the rubber seals and routing the wires under/near them. I would much rather do what you said you did by routing with the plastic panels (because they have clips). The weather strips never stay in place with the same strength after they've been removed. Just my two cents

How does the parking mode work? Does it automatically go into parking mode when it senses no motion or do I need to press a button every time? I have hardwired mine to constant power

That hard wire kit is good for protecting your vehicle when the ignition is off and records movement near your vehicle when your away. How would that dash cam be getting power to record any of that?

Awesome video! I got a 2019 & 2022 Merz and I was concerned about the parking mode and hardware kit I had to watch this. Why didn’t you go with the OBD to USB-C option? My issue is with bare wires and fuses burning faster, dead battery or triggering warnings light.

Isn't the wire kit for using a fuse which is always on? Because only then the parking mode will work when nobody is there? And the wire kit turns off the cam if the battery is low.

does hardwiring stop the time and date not staying constant? my N4 seems to be wrong time when i first start car in morning, then mid day goes right, then late at night back to wrong time, so i assume capacitor runs out and it doesnt know time anymore, then updates itself at somepoint? or its broke?...

Thanks for the install video, I have the non suction cup mount and have never adhered anything to my window before. So it has a strip to peel off on the mount unit, and a stand alone pad and peels off on both sides, my question, Is that an extra mounting pad? Or does that go on the window first? Thanks

I see you wired the dash cam hardwire kit to a switched power source. Correct me if I am wrong but isn't the point of this cameras hardwire kit to have power always available so parking mode can be used? I just did mine this morning and in the vantrue instructions says pretty much that. After Installion the directions " you might find yours in the bin".

I've had this Vantrue N4 since December 2020, and I've only been using it with the 12v lighter cable that came with the unit, which seems to have just died on me. I've confirmed the lighter plug in the car still has power, so I'm sure it's the power cable that came with the dash cam. I have the hardwire kit to try out, but seeing that the one in this video was dead on arrival, I'm a bit skepitcal about trying it now. Also, it only seems to have a Ground and an ACC wire. If it's wired to ignition, doesn't that mean that parking mode won't work?

Could you tell us where the piggyback adapter goes together? I know it goes into a live fuse but how does the cigarette lighter 12v socket thing go onto the end of it? 🤔🤔
@NobleDistortion
@NobleDistortion 3 жыл бұрын
It doesn't use the 12v/cigarette lighter, it gets its live/neutral from the fuse and then earth from the bolt. Think of it as a lamp you plug in to a socket compared to the light you switch on at the wall.. it doesn't need a plug as it's hard wired into the wall

In southern California it costs around $100 - $150 per hour of labor. I got quoted $250 to install both cameras. Supposedly it would take 2 hours to do the job. I ended up doing it myself. It took me about 2.5 hours, but then again I have no experience and I was extra careful with everything.

I'm guessing when on test you can just sping the interior cam around so its not filming the examiner. Or even just unclip whole unit 🤣
