My full review of the Varjo Aero, the first premium Prosumer grade VR Headset to combine Aspheric Lenses with modern high resolution LCD panels. The video focuses on how the Varjo Aero compares to the HP Reverb G2, and with it costing nearly $2000, is worth upgrading?

Just wanted to follow up and thank you for all the help you've been! Initially used my Aero in MSFS for the first couple of weeks. Loaded up DCS the other day and was hit with that weird issue, then I remembered that you mentioned some setup tips. Now I'm having a blast and it is the most awesome VR experience I've ever had! Really love this thing in DCS, with Voice Attack/Vaicom pro and my PointCntrl finger units. Incredible experience when you tie all of them together. Also just added the Winwing F16EX throttle, which is awesome. One thing I notice is slight judder when I look left or right in the cockpit. I have a 3080, i7-1100K, so I'm going to try your settings that you've posted for DCS. I'll experiment later, but right now I'm off to see Top Gun Maverick (for the second time). This time in IMAX! Awesome movie 😉👍🏾

Awesome, glad to help and I really appreciate the feedback. Sounds like the next thing you need to add is some tactile feedback like a Buttkicker 2 or something. I absolutely love all the stuff! Please let me know how my settings work out for you. Thanks for being a GYGO viewer.

Hey GYGO - if the clarity of the Varjo Aero is anything like your presentation skills then I am ready to be blown away…! I really enjoyed your insightful honest and obviously passionate review of this headset. Your enthusiasm is infectious and your intelligent breakdown of all aspects hugely appreciated by me! I have a reverb G2 that has just broken down on me - I’ve had it almost 2 years, and as I don’t spend as many hours as some might do in VR, I was mightily disappointed when a pixel went in the right eye a few months ago and then yesterday a large what I can only describe as a burn mark appeared in the left eye… I did nothing out of the ordinary with the headset so I’m hugely upset. Hence researching new headsets now. I sim race a lot so your input on that I have taken to heart - this will be my next headset in the coming months. Thank you so much and I’ll keep watching your channel!

Thanks background man... and the best part is watching my video didn't cost you $2000... well I guess it might end up costing you $2000 but that will go to Varjo, not me :) Appreciate you taking the time to both watch and leave a well written comment. Appreciate the positive feedback as well. I literally just got out of flying 1 mission in my F/A-18 for the past 2 and a half hours and I still love the Aero! For racing, I really think it is the best out there. Again, Pimax is looming with a supposed new headset so if you want to wait for it you can... but I'm skeptical about how good theirs will be in the end. You can watch my videos on the Pimax 12K OLED and Pimax Crystal if you haven't yet, for more info. FYI, I've been offered an invitation to join Varjo's affiliate program and may do that, but am trying to get at least some sort of discount for the buyer. Not sure if it will happen or not, but when you are ready to buy you may check back here to see if I was successful! Thanks again for being a GYGO viewer and good luck with your VR purchase.

You are very well spoken, very easy video to follow and I actually feel like I'm learning something, the VR information channels on KZfaq primarily just spew out the same stuff, something something quest 2, or "it's higher resolution, it looks like I'm there", I'm really glad that you are discussing things like the sweet spot, type of lens, and physically how it is put on your face. BREAKING NEWS (9/20/23) The Varjo Aero is NOW $990! This is the new standard price of the headset and not a promotional offer. This gives the Aero an even more compelling cases for purchase. Again, unless you really want wireless or that extra vertical FOV, the Aero is a fantastic option over the Pimax Crystal. (Aero Affiliate Link) varjo.idevaffiliate.com/111.html UPDATE: Positional Audio Works Wirelessly - The most important thing to me is that my viewers have accurate information and thanks to Ben S this issue is resolved. A big thank you to Ben, who inspired me to look more closely at the wireless positional sound issue. As I mention in my video I am sharing my experience with you, and I experienced a lack of positional sound when wireless. After reinstalling my wireless software and making sure everything was up to date, I double checked that I was on 7.1 sound and it worked! The lesson here Boys and Girls is to always keep your drivers and software up to date. I thought about re-editing the video but it's already had so many views I hated to do that. Plus, that WAS my experience so maybe this will help if someone else has this same issue.

Best analysis of the Varjo I have seen. So much detail in there. Has not pushed me off the fence, but certainly given me much food for thought. Think we are still 1 or maybe 2 generations away from powerful enough GPU's to get a truly immersive experience, so i'll make at least a 1 gen update to GPU before considering, and who knows, maybe by that time, and updated Aero (or worthy competitor) may be on the horizon.
@GYGOtv

Thanks for the compliment Fish! I agree we are not quite there with GPUs yet... but I do think Dynamic Foveated Rendering could make the difference with today's GPUs if games start implementing that. I feel like my overclocked 3080ti gets me just to the min of what I want but I'd love to have just a little more headroom, so we will see what the new 4000 series brings. I will say, if you are a flight sim guy, you will really like the experience in the Aero (or the Aero 2 if you wait long enough) :)
@JayRacer
@JayRacer Жыл бұрын
I think it really depends on how much time you're comfortable dedicating to optimizing your sims. There are a lot of "tweaks" that must be made in order to run on current systems. 2 that come to mind: 1. Changing your "rooms" 2. Implementing OpenXR 1. This is coming from the perspective of a WMR Odyssey+ user. Both SteamVR and WMR both have a space that you launch from. In games based on SteamVR, I first have to launch from my "Skyspace," the 3d room/interface for WMR. Then I have a whole separate room for Steam. For WMR, you can change your skyspace from this large beautiful multi-room apartment to a 3 sided room that includes 2 walls and a floor. The reason? Because the former eats up gigs of VRam while that latter eats up just a few megabytes. With the Steam "room," you can just eliminate it so that you're in a wireframe environment with the steam menu in front of you. Both "rooms" ran in the background, costing a ton of overhead. 2. Forcing your software to use OpenXR instead of Steam VR. I don't know about "all" of the titles, but in Assetto Corsa Competizione and DCS, forcing OpenXR eeks out significantly better performance. Additionally, MSFS2020 is amazing in VR. You can't run it 100% maxxed out, but then again, most rigs cannot do that in 4k. If you adjust the settings accordingly, it runs better in VR than XPlane or MSFS X ran in 2d 10 years ago. Other titles such as Elite Dangerous, Raceroom, the original Assetto Corsa, and Automobilista 2 all run phenomenally in VR. For reference, I'm running a 10Gb 3080 and a 5900x. Sorry for the long reply. But VR gaming is approachable now for the right amount of money, know-how, and technical prowess.... in simming. Other games run with very little to zero tweaking required. It's the high-powered sims that require technical prowess. As far as VR Simming being Plug and Play? My money is on the 5 series. Cheers!

Great review! You covered all the bases here especially around the black level problem. I thought I was the only one who is has a big problem when there is a dark scene of any kind and almost a deal breaker for me. I hope the local dimming is eventually supported! Thanks for the view, comment and the compliment Derek! Ya, I didn't buy and index because it wasn't OLED... I was hesitant to buy the HP G2 because it wasn't OLED (but glad I did for the resolution). I was hoping by the time the AERO got to me they would have the local dimming implemented... was disappointing to hear from them that they may not ever do that. If the AERO didn't tick so many other boxes for me, the blacks may have been a deal breaker for me. But man the experience is so good in every other way that I'm happy to own the Aero. Just wish they would fix that one last problem.

Going from the Valve Index to the Varjo and only having it for a day the main pro I noticed right away is the clarity and the second thing which I think is just as important it's clear from where ever you look. The con would be as you said vertical FOV was not as good but after an hour I became use to it. To me the clarity is well worth the loss in vertical FOV.

The 4090 changed everything, especially for G2 owners. My V1 pre-order is still going strong and now with a 4090 it's pushing 120% SS at a locked 90fps in AMS 2 and high MSAA using open XR and open composite. Will ride this headset out until a new Index drops. If HP had stayed in the VR market I think I would have gone for a G3 based on how good my experience with the G2 has been. The thing is bulletproof.
@GYGOtv
@GYGOtv Жыл бұрын
Hi Low Blow, I continue to believe that the G2 is the best VALUE in VR, and your comment seems to reinforce that. The new developments with OpenXR, etc. have helped everyone it seems. I do a lot of DCS and they just introduced multi-threading which also helps, so what a great time to be into VR! That 4090 is a monster too for sure and I've thought long and hard about buying one even though I have a 3080ti. I'm hoping I can hold out until at least the 4090ti but time will tell. What I can tell you is that you are missing out on the larger FOV of the newer headsets, and also the edge to edge clearity of the aspheric lenses, which is kind of a big deal. It just makes everything more lifelike when everything is clearer. Now again is it worth 4x the price... well that is an individual decision, but I can say it does give a better experience than the G2. Anyway, I also wish HP had stayed in the VR Market because I would have liked to have seen what a G3 would have looked like. Who knows, maybe they will come back someday. Thanks for the comment, appreciate you watching our content.

Great review!!! As a serious sim racer this was what I needed!! I have tried a few headsets but always ended up back with my Rift CV1, not the greatest at all but it’s rock solid, works every time and all I need to do is open oculus when I fire up the PC and have it running. No steam, no WMR, super easy,that’s important to me. Just open an Iracing session, Let It load and there you are. Do you need to use steam with the Varjo or will it be the same as the Rift, Just have their soft ware running in the background?? Best review I have watched!!
@GYGOtv
@GYGOtv Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment derek, ya the Varjo won't be as easy as the Rift if that is your main concern. Some games are a challenge to figure out how to get working and some need a special qualifier tag to get running (like a " --force_steam_VR" or something similar after the executable). Once you figure out how everything needs to be configured it is easy to just launch from the icon... but the setup can be tricky. Also the Varjo uses steam as a foundation to run and then the varjo base runs over it so it is not as clean a setup but similar to running WMD and other programs like that. Anyway, if you willing to put the effort in, the Varjo is an AMAZING headset... but I totally get not wanting the Pain in the Ass factor that all this can be. Hope that helps, and if you do decide on an Aero, remember we are an affiliate if you don't mind using our link varjo.idevaffiliate.com/111.html

Interesting, clear review and comparison. As you say I'd expect the 2nd gen to have audio and maybe tracking built in, without the need to add these I might have bought it for the price just for the clarity. Question, will it work ok with my RTX 2060?
@GYGOtv
@GYGOtv 2 жыл бұрын
It should work with the 2060 as that is the minimum spec they list. I would say, if you are currently running a HP Reverb G2, you can expect about the same performance from the Aero. Now once Dynamic Foveated Rendering is a thing, the 2060 should give you even better results. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a question.

OK I’m continuing to finish your video. I must say by far the best video out there on the headset. I also heard that they have taken some of the warping with a software update. Is that true? And hopefully they can get a audio update to use wireless headsets for positioning sound that would be great because I would like to use my wireless Bose earbuds.
@GYGOtv

Hi Richard, thank you for the compliment. If you look at the pinned update, you will see that positional audio works just fine. The problem was fixed with updated drivers for my audio headset. What I called "warping" is due to the lenses... they did fix all the "distortions" from the headset with software a long time ago. So enjoy your Aero and enjoy your Bose earbuds, those should work well. You will still need to add a microphone if your Bose earbuds don't have them and you want to talk to anyone.

Excellent review! As one of the G2 owners I'm waiting to see what happens with the new upcoming headsets but I have a strong feeling the Varjo with it's 35 PPD will continue to stay relevant. The headset looks quality and it's nice knowing the clarity is 95% of the screen. For my I'll be continuing with the HP G2. For 2000 UK pounds it has too many problems. Black levels, chromatic aberration, distortion/warping, fan noise, lighthouse tracking, and controllers extra cost, lack of motion reprojection, bulky design.
@GYGOtv
@GYGOtv Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment David, ya and for the price the G2 is a pretty strong value proposition. The chromatic aberrations and distortion are not that bad and the design is comfortable even though it looks bulky it really isn't bad. Unfortunately I think most of the next gen headsets are all going to be in the $1000 to $2000 range, so I think the days of the G2 and Quest 2 might be over for awhile. Time will tell. Also, if the Crystal pulls off what they claim, it might be the perfect compromise for what you are looking for. But I wouldn't even think about buying one until you hear some independent reviews. Giza Egypt, to visit the pyramids (one of my bucket list items). WOW!!! I was blown away by the clarity, especially in the cockpit! What an amazing experience. It really felt like I was sitting in the real thing, although the only Cessnas I've flown IRL are 172s and 182s, but man! I sim race, and I want it so bad because I know its good. But I cant justify the price-point. Not to mention, there are some reliability issues reported, potentially costing more money. I've decided to wait to see the next gen releases, hoping the tech catches on for a better price

Thanks for the comment Pauly, I totally understand where you are coming from. The Aero is an incredible experience (especially for sim racing), but honestly, the HP G2 gets you a pretty good experience at a fraction of the price. I think the Pimax 12K OLED has the potential to be THE HEADSET we have all been dreaming of, but I also think it will end up costing more than the Aero does. Give it time, this tech will become more common... and thus more affordable.

What a great review! This is actually the first time I hear about the Fresnel vs aspherical lenses topic. I noticed the "rings" on the glass but I never thought much of it. To me the biggest disappointment with the G2 is actually the sweetspot. As someone new to VR, I expected to have a clear image where ever I point my eyes in the headset. With the G2 I have to move my head all the time to actually read the different instruments when I'm flying in DCS and it's so hard to spot planes against terrain when everything is just kind of blurry except for the very center of the image. At some point I thought that this is an issue with VR in general but your review made it seem like this is basically not an issue with Varjo Aero. I'm currently thinking that this headset might be just what I was hoping for to have with the G2. You should have an affiliate link for Varjo ;)
@GYGOtv
@GYGOtv Жыл бұрын
Hi Tobias, welcome to VR!!! You are right on the money as far as the sweet spot... with Fresnel you only get the clear image right in front of you. The aspherical lenses make that much better. Now the trade off is slight distortions and some chromatic aberration but I'll take that any day over the god rays and glare. As for the affiliate link, I am planning to do that, but I'm trying to find a way that I can give at least a small discount to anyone using my link. I'll probably have to take it out of my commission, but that is ok with me. If you are serious about using my affiliate, let me know and I'll try to fast track that so I don't hold you up. I really do think from what you describe that the Aero would make a big difference for you. Just know you will also need base stations so if you can, try to find an original vive setup because those lighthouses will work and they should be cheaper than buying new. Good luck!

Great review GYGO. Your findings about the Aero are quite similar to mine. I have my Aero now for more then 3 months and I am absolutely enjoying it. The edge-to-edge clarity and no godrays/glaring are the real game changers in comparison to my HP Reverb G1, which was already a very good headset with great resolution (same as G2), but tracking and WMR not that great ... . For me it was really worth it to upgrade to the Aero. At the moment the major flaw of the Aero are for me also the subpar black levels. I hope Varjo will solve this by implementing local dimming or at least let us control the backlight brightness ourselves. I also mentioned that to Varjo in my review of the Aero to them. They thanked me for the feedback, because that let them enhance their product. Let's hope the blacklevel issue is of enough importance to them so they fix it ... .

Hello Gygo, it was not a real review I have sent to Varjo, but merely a summary of my impressions and issues with the Aero. So that Varjo would know at least what were my experiences with their headset (hoping that they could fix the blacklevel issue). I am still rather busy professionally and for me VR is more a sidestep to relax, so I have not really the time or the intent to make high quality video reviews like you do (good job by the way). Here a short summary of my experiences with the Aero: - There are the known issues of chromatic aberration and the warping at the edges, but those did not distract me anymore after a while. It seems the brain is rather quickly filtering that out and the warping issue is also mainly resolved after the latest distortion patch. - The fan is a real plus for me. I get always fogged lenses after a while in my other headsets (HP Reverb G1 and original Vive), but due to the fan that does not happen with the Aero. The fan noise is noticeable but not to the extend it is intrusive. - The lack of a real audio solution did not bother me. On the contrary I always use my own audio solution, I also did that with my other headsets as the audio in headsets is just mainstream. I don't expect to see any highend built in audio quality in headsets. For that you need a decent sound card/amplifier and a headphone with at least medium impedance (e.g. 200 ohm). The focus in headsets is mainly on the visuals, audio is just to personal/subjective for a headset company to invest in it. - The standard comfort of the Aero is fine, but I still ordered the Studioform counterweight strap which just makes it all more comfy (then there is no need anymore to tighten the knobs that much, so less pressure on the head due to a better balance of the weight). - The high resolution (no SDE anymore) and the end-to-end clarity are the gamechangers compared to the other headsets. As I am getting older (50+) and starting to have a little farsightedness (+1 presbyopia), but I still wanted to enjoy all this eye candy I also ordered a set of VR Optician lenses for my Aero. They fit well and work great (no negative side effects at all). - And then there are the already mentioned subpar blacklevels ... , for me just the major flaw of the Aero at the moment. I hope Varjo will tackle this as well as they did with the warping/distortion issue. We need to make Varjo aware that this is still a major shortcoming of their headset. At least for me but i assume for a lot of other people as well, so they will be convinced to implement local dimming (or at least let us change the backlight brightness ourselves). Of course the whole VR sensation is mainly a rather personal colored experience. For some people clarity is of main importance, for others it is FOV. Some get bothered by SDE and others not, and so on ... not to mention blacklevels ;) For me the purchase of the Varjo Aero was really worth it, although my bank account was a little bit stunned but survived :) For others it could be a different story. But having witnessed myself the stone age of computer science (70s-80s) it is just freaking amazing what we can already experience with VR at this moment, and that all just on our own home pc's. It is still not perfect, but I am not complaining. To be able to travel virtually the whole world in such a visual quality, and that from our own sofa, that is just mindblowing.

You can attach some kind of weight to the rear section to even the front-back weight balance, maybe 6-8 ounces or so. Great honest review. Can I keep my glasses on without scratching the lenses?
@GYGOtv
@GYGOtv 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Robin, sorry for the delay... this comment didn't show up on my notifications and I just found it. In general, glasses are always a risky proposition so contact lenses or prescription lens covers are preferred. That being said, it will honestly depend on your glasses. I think most "will fit" but as far as not scratching that may be a different story. I have a daily pair of glasses which is larger and a smaller "VR Pair" that I use in headsets. The larger pair fits, but it is tight and even pushes down on my nose a little. I predict these would scratch the lenses eventually. The smaller "VR Pair" have about a 1/4 inch of room between them and the Aero Lenses. I checked this when I first got the headset by wearing everything and grabbing the glasses frames and pushing them forward into the lenses while the Aero still had the protective plastic on the lenses. I've been using these for over a month now and I just checked and still no scratches on the lenses (knock on wood). One final note, I think the plastic collar around where the IR lights (for eyetracking) sticks out a little and may also provide a "stopper" for hitting the lenses in some cases but I wouldn't count on it. Be very diligent and just check your lenses regularly to catch any problems early. Obviously you don't want any scratches, but 1 scratch is better than 1000 scratches. Hope this helps and thanks for the compliment and the question.

@@GYGOtv thank you for your reply 🙂. i say its not a good choice for several reasons, the budget they would use for integrated audio is much better used for things like ventilation for example, the issue is emphasized even more when everyone can easily get far better choices than integrated audio, in sound quality and practicality, for very cheap prices. even if practicality is the priority, one can easily find great sounding earplugs, far better than limited and limiting integrated audio. and there s even more factors, integrated audio might even limit the positioning possibilities of the headset because of the different headshapes. it even also goes to the point that many people already have better audio at home. integrated audio is like a pretty package box, it might not look the best having a lame box that does the same job of a pretty box, but the company can spend that budget in a more important thing

@@jh5kl So this is what I love about my viewers, you guys are so knowledgeable and passionate about this kind of stuff. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and insights. I totally understand what you are saying and makes sense BUT for me, I hate the hassle of putting the headset on and then the audio (even if it is just putting in earbuds). Seems like I always forget and end up either yanking them out of my ears with the VR headset, or try to pull the VR headset off without taking the headphones off first. Might sound like a minor thing for most that I should just be able to get in the habit of doing correctly... but a pain for me none the less. I do endorse the idea of any integrated audio to be removable if desired by the end-user for the specific reasons you mention above. I just prefer to have the option for integrated audio for the convenience. Maybe the right answer is to have a version with, and one without to address your budgetary concerns? Very comprehensive review. I have the G2 and one of my main gripes is with the abysmally small sweet spot. Even though the G2 is my main sim headset, when I put my Quest 2 on, I essentially forget I'm in a virtual world due to the edge-to-edge clarity. This is due to Oculus' fantastic lenses. And after the Quest 3 announcement with pancake lenses, I believe I'm gonna put the poor girl out of her misery and just use the Q3. That ability to actually move your eyes rather than just be an owl is so freeing.

Hi MrJr, yes it is hard to describe how much that edge to edge clarity makes a difference but it sure does. I think the Quest 3 is going to be a worthy upgrade for almost all Quest 2 owners. @@GYGOtv In all honesty, $500 for all the stuff the headset will provide such as higher than 4k edge-to-edge screens, full color 3d passthrough, a better processor, 128gb of storage from the start, and a MANUAL IPD slider on top of so much else is such a good deal. A wireless 4k headset that is PC-compatible for $500 is an understandable increase. That's a gaming console in the modern era. MUCH better than the $3500 abomination that is the Apple headset. I've set things up so that basically all my media from VHS tapes to 4K 3D Blu-ray can be consumed through Bigscreen and with friends. I'm excited for the future of VR

Great video. I do have a G2V2 and am very happy with it, as you mentioned the worst part of the G2 is the WMR tie in, if this thing would have been a native SteamVR (lighthouses) headset, it would have been amazing. Also, you don't need to use the controller(s) to get into SteamVR from the cliff house, I turn on my G2, WMR Portal automatically appears and connects, I then fire up Steam and hit the SteamVR icon and the G2 automatically goes to SteamVR in the headset. The latest version of the WMR software also has a option to jump right into SteamVR automatically when you fire up the G2 (the WMR software will still be running in the background of course hogging as many resources as it can, it is Microsoft after all. LOL) I am a Sim Racer, I would love to experience the Aero, but at a little over $2500 Canadian, it's a forbidden fruit for me. I was very lucky to get my G2 on Black Friday sale ($300 off regular price) otherwise, I wouldn't have that either! LOL I am very surprised that Varjo doesn't have a brightness control, also surprised you can't use the brightness control in SteamVR but it seems only the Valve Index has that luxury. With the screens being so bright, how warm does the Aero get? I know the Index can get fairly warm when the screen brightness is on the higher settings.

Ya, I got the the G2 on sale for 450 but I actually returned it. The speakers were good, but for some reason too quiet (which is weird since my old Valve Index had the same speakers and were plenty loud). It was really annoying when playing BeatSaber or Ragnarock. I also had issues with a blue light around the edge in games like Skyrim with the v2 face gasket as well as some games being really glitchy like Mini Golf and Zenith (weird pop-ins etc) not to mention Steam Home just randomly going crazy and making me want to vomit, lol. I have a beefy PC too with a 3080 and 11700kf. So i went ahead and ordered the Aero. Really hoping it's as good as I'm hearing!

Good to know about WMR... I doubt I'll ever need to use it again but hopefully other viewers will find that helpful. Excellent review!! I have some points to clear. - VP2 is not good for flight but for simracers is the best. With perfkit and fixed foveated rendering we can 3500x3500 90 fps iracing is crisp clear. For flight the g2 is better. - i had the amazing cv1 when it launch and as everybody we love the blacks of the oled. But when i upgrade to the G2 or even the VP2 the brightness was so much better. Realise this, asking for oled as it is, will have big impact on the brightness. So when talk about oled remember that. Is big trade off to get the oled. Right now i prefer LCD. For example the blacks on the vp2 are very good, the problem is the amount of glare. As simracer this is no problem to me. As said excellent review, waiting to receive the varjo and see it myself!

Hi Amilcar, thanks for the comment and the view. My first video ever was my review of the VP2 (Vive Pro 2) and you can see it here if you haven't already (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mLyUZbtk1tSZhYE.html) and as I mention it was close but the glare ruined it for me. I can see how racing it wouldn't be an issue so great point. I really noticed the performance deficit compared to the G2 so if perfkit helps that, that is great info as well. As for OLED, I'm still an OLED snob and will take OLED over LCD everytime... Hell I still use my original Vive Pro for roomscale and love it in spite of the lower resolution and Pentile pixel display. It will be interesting to hear what you think of the Aero compared to the VP2, so please let me know your thoughts when you get it. Varjo is working on a way for us to adjust the brightness so hopefully that will be working by the time you get yours... otherwise you are really going to notice the lack of black levels on the Aero compared to the VP2. Keep us posted, and thanks for watching!

HI GYGO, great review. Liked it. There is one thing which made me doubt about the Areo was your comment about Elite Dangerous which is my favourite Space Sim game. Did I get it right you would not buy it for ED for the grey of the darkness and the loss of contrast in the void? So you think that the Reverb G2 is better for ED? My eyes are getting weaker so as I am just the age of 50 I try to get it as sharp as I can. I am still using the Oculus Rift but I am not satisfied as the rift is getting to warm inside after 45 minutes and the clarity and solution are improved in the meantime with other VR headsets. Which headset would you go for ED?
@GYGOtv
@GYGOtv 2 жыл бұрын
Hi M. Benicke, thanks for the comment. 50... such a young man, lol I just turned 53 so I feel your pain! So let me tell you my journey with Elite Dangerous (one of the reasons I got into VR way back when). I started with the old Headsets that had OLED screens, so "the void" was pitch black. It was awesome BUT of course the resolution was really bad. Then I went to the G2, and the resolution was better but then the blacks were more grey. THEN I went to the Aero and resolution was amazing but again the blacks were even more grey, so seems like the better the screen looks the greyer the blacks get. So with you starting with the Rift, I think you will likely see the same thing since, if memory serves, you have OLED screens in that as well. Now with all that out of the way lets talk about your situation. The problem with the G2, or pretty much any other headset out there except the Aero is that you will get Glare and Godrays in high contrast scenes, which there are a lot of in ED. I don't know if you have noticed them in the Rift or if they do not bother you but the awesome thing about the Aero is that glare and godrays are not an issue. The biggest thing however is that the Aero has the ability to dim the panels AND Varjo has told me they are going to at least add a brightness adjustment to the software. If/When they do that I think the Aero will be your best bet because you can dial down the brightness to your liking. And I can tell you the clarity is unmatched in that headset. So you could wait for the brightness adjustment, or if want to get onboard now (the Aero will work obviously with ED currently, and then you can hope that the brightness fix comes soon) that would be an option. Or you could wait to see if the Pimax 12K QLED might fit the bill better if it comes out at the end of the year. If I were you from what I can gather from your comment, I'd probably go for the Aero now, knowing the brightness will at least be adjustable in the future. Hope that helps, if you have any other questions please let me know.

Very helpful level-headed review, and very clearly presented, thank you. I had a question if you don’t mind - I don’t see it answered below, but thank you for taking the time to answer everybody. At 31:30 you say that you wouldn’t use the Aero for roomscale yourself - may I ask why? I’m not a sim guy myself, I usually play FPS and immersive survival games like Into The Radius - is there a reason why the Aero wouldn’t be a good fit for that? For context I’m a Vive Pro 1 wireless user interested in an upgrade. Given my high IPD (73mm) my options are quite limited! I don’t like Pimax for roomscale because of the eyestrain.
@GYGOtv
@GYGOtv 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Brian, thanks for the compliment and the question. So funny that you are using the Vive Pro 1 wirelessly BECAUSE that is the main reason I won't use the Aero... I also run roomscale in my Vive Pro wirelessly and I don't want to be tethered again. Also, I REALLY like the black of OLED screens and I'd rather give up resolution for true blacks in roomscale games. The other reason I wouldn't recommend it for roomscale is, in general, roomscale VR doesn't really need the high clarity that sim games do... so to spend $2000 on a headset for that seems like a little too much for most people. Now by all means if you want (and can afford it) to use the Aero, please do... It will give you unmatched visuals, but you will notice the lack of blacks if you are coming from the OLED of the Vive Pro. I just don't think the $2k is the best use of money for most people in a roomscale only situation. I hope that answers your question and thanks again for being a viewer.

Thanks for watching the channel patrones, so from my experience the Varjo Aero will give you the same, if not better performance than you are currently getting in your G2. The Varjo Base software is optimized to the point where it runs the headset as well as a HP G2 even though the Aero is higher resolution. Additionally with the Aero's eye tracking, you can maximize performance even more if you use Dynamic Foveated Rendering. If you do decide to purchase the Aero and want to help the channel, please use our affiliate link varjo.idevaffiliate.com/111.html Thanks for your support!

@@patrones6024Hi patrones, great to hear back from you. For Sim Racing you probably would be fine with one basestation mounted in front, you might lose tracking if you turn your head completely around to look 180 behind you, but I doubt you will be doing that much (that is what mirrors are for right?). Anyway, you could always start with a single base station and then if you find you are having trouble, you can add the second one later. Also keep in mind the Aero works just fine with v1.0 base stations as well so no need for the v2.0 if you want to save a few bucks. v2.0s big advantage was you could pair more than 2 in a room, which you don't need. I'm still running v1.0 and they work great. As for controllers, if you have access to your mouse and keyboard you will probably be fine without them. When I'm using the Aero, I don't use controllers because I can access the menu with the side button on the headset. If you would like to also support the channel with your purchase, please use our affiliate link varjo.idevaffiliate.com/111.html it doesn't cost you anything extra to use it. Thank you for the very good and detailed review. I have G2 with RTX3080. I play iracing only. I checked a lot of review and I am confused. They have very low (60-70) fps with 3080ti and 3090 in iracing but I don't understand it. I thought with the better software you should get the same fps then the wmr based G2 (then you mentioned too). I would like to buy Varjo but I am afraid of low fps (with G2 I have stable 90). Other problem with my G2 is the "strained" eyes after hours. Should I buy 2 base stations or 1 is enough for sitting racing game?

@GYGOtv Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question Zoltan. So I have a 3080ti and my Aero consistently performs better than my Reverb G2 (v1), so that is the only data point I can give you from personal experience. I don't know if the other reviewers bumped things up or changed settings, but I kept mine the same and had easily 2 to 3 frames per second better with the Aero. I've also only ever used 2 base stations with my setup, but theoretically if you have just one, it should work fine... the only time I would expect you could run into issues is if you look directly behind you. You might loose tracking then with only one base station. You could always start with one and then if it doesn't work, you can easily add the second one. The best news however is Aero is running a Black Friday deal right now so if you do decide to purchase the Aero, please use my affiliate link for it, it would be much appreciated. varjo.idevaffiliate.com/111.html I can tell you the Aero is the best VR racing experience I've ever had. I don't think Meta will get into the aspheric lens market... too many challenges to overcome and they are more on the "mass market" side of things making headsets for the "masses" instead of us enthusiasts. I bet Meta focuses more on the social stuff like face and body tracking rather than improving the visuals to this level. Thanks for the great review. I'm looking to get into VR and am contemplating the Varjo Aero. You mention you wouldn't see use it for room scale VR. Any particular reason? @GYGOtv
@GYGOtv Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the Sub Steve, also appreciate the comments. SO for room scale I can't go back to a tethered experience after being wireless so that is the main reason I don't use the Aero for roomscale. I still have my Ol' Vive Pro that I use for that. Consequently I have not used the Aero in Alyx. SO here are my thoughts and again I'm sure many people will disagree which is fine. SO most roomscale games don't require the high resolution capability of the Aero. Really you only need that high resolution for reading gauges in a cockpit IMO. Would that resolution be nice, sure but the trade off for that which I won't make is you have to use LCD backlit panels which can't produce the BLACK blacks of an OLED screen. Roomscale games like Alyx have a lot more dark areas in them so I think the lower resolution OLED panels (especially if wireless) give a better experience in roomscale than the High Resolution LCD panels found in most modern headsets (Again this is all my opinion). The answer may be coming in the new Pimax headsets (the 12k QLED and the Crystal kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nrZjbLCh2pariYU.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mOCbnL1irtOxoKc.html) that will use QLED panels with "Local Dimming" which might give us the best of both worlds if they deliver what they are promising (A big if based on Pimax's history). The QLED might give us the higher resolution with the ability for the dark areas to be near OLED black level. The Crystal is supposed to launch Q3 of this year which is basically now, and the 12K is supposed to launch by year end... But I have my doubts on both. As a bonus, both claim to be wireless capable so really these will be the headsets that check all the boxes IF they pull it off. Time will tell, but might be worth waiting a few more months to find out. Anyway, I hope that helps you with your decision making process. If you have any other questions, just let me know and I'll do my best to answer them. Appreciate you watching GYGO!!!

Also, with the new 4000 series video cards coming out soon, keep an eye out for deals on 3080ti's or 3090's if you are trying to save a few bucks. You mentioned that the Aero is hands down the best VR headset for simracing. But have you tried the Pimax 8KX in that role? I haven't seen your channel before and searching around didn't find any apparent experience with that VR headset. I've found the wide FOV of the 8KX to be game changing for simracing. I'm able to see all of the cockpit mirrors at once, and that's a big deal when knife fighting with other cars. It's very obvious when I'm door to door with another competitor that I'm able to see where they are while also looking ahead on the track at the same time and seeing my mirrors, too. Meanwhile, they're either looking at me or looking ahead on the track, but they can't do both at any particular moment. I've found that it gives me a significant advantage.

Unfortunately I haven't tried a Pimax, but I have heard that the image quality isn't even as good as the HP Reverb G2, and clarity is where my preference is. That super wide field of view might be more of an advantage competing than the full lens clarity but I don't know. I think the clarity would still win over the wide FOV for me as far as making it feel more "realistic" and the immersion is what I'm after. Now if the Pimax 12k QLED actually delivers... we might get both clarity and wide FOV. Time will tell.

In fact, one of the first things you learn in flight school is, NOT to depend on your FOV, but to keep your head on a swivel (to avoid a deadly midair collision). Great question Tronpoid, thanks for watching our stuff! This is a tough one, my gut instinct is to say the HP G2 because I still think it is the best value for clarity. but if you had problems with the Quest 2, I think you would have the same results with the HP because they both max the IPD at 68. SO I think you might look into a Vive Pro 2, as long as you don't mind the glare in high contrast scenes (see my review here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mLyUZbtk1tSZhYE.html). It has a max IPD of 70, so a little closer. By comparison, I'm an IPD of 69.5 so I'm 1.5 out of range on the HP G2, and you would be a little worse off than that at 2 out (72 vs.70) in the VP2. For what it's worth, at 1.5 out of range it isn't too bad for me. Your other option is to look into a Pimax and see if one of those headsets fit your budget and feature-set. All the Pimax headsets go out to an IPD of 72. You will need lighthouses for tracking for either the Vive Pro 2 or any of the Pimax headsets. Do some additional research if you are leaning toward Pimax because I do know a lot of people have problems with the distortion on the 200 degree settings, so the Artisan might be a good option if you want to avoid that. Hope that at least gives you a direction to go.

@GYGOtv
@GYGOtv 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ben, thanks for the question. I don't specifically know about the Astro A50, but I'd assume it would still be the same result. When you are wireless, the computer is sending the audio and there is no way for it to know how to pan the sound other than as if you are staring at your monitor from directly in front of it, it doesn't really know where you are looking in VR. When you use the 3.5mm jack, then the Aero is controlling the sound from the game and it can tell which way your head is turned. I tested this out several times and this was repeatedly the case for me. To be honest, most other reviewers probably didn't notice or didn't care because it is a pretty subtle thing. I'd love to hear if other people are experiencing this, but I know I am, so please sound off with what you find out. As for not using it for roomscale... a couple things. First off the horrible black levels would ruin it for me... again I'm an OLED Snob and most of my roomscale games take place in dark environments. I still use my Original Vive Pro for roomscale because it has OLED and I'll trade the clarity for the pitch black darks in that situation. Most roomscale games don't need the clarity that you need in an aircraft or racecar to read the gauges. Would the clarity be nice... sure but not enough to give up the black levels. Also a big one is my Vive Pro is wireless and once you go wireless it is really hard to be tethered to the computer again. Again this is a personal preference, but those are my reasons. Hope that answers your question and thanks again for the view and compliment.

@@GYGOtv Interesting...I wonder if it may be your headset since I currently have a 5.1 surround setup for my flatscreen monitor and when I move in the game, the sound moves around me too, so I would think it would be the same with the headphones since the sound should be tracking your character in game regardless of the speaker setup. I have a Quest 2 currently that I think I'll try the Astro's with tonight and test it out. I'm quite an audiophile so that would bother me too if it doesn't work the way it's supposed to when I receive my Aero. As far as room scale, ya I got pretty used to the Quest2 wireless but I think the clarity will outweigh that. As you said in your video, Varjo is supposed to be updating the software to include the ability to turn off pixels for much better black levels but hasn't happened yet. I'm pretty confident they will since they are releasing an update this month to use dynamic foveated rendering for MSFS, which would be a first for the industry, so it appears they're dedicated to improving it on a regular basis. Hopefully they do it soon!

@@justaguydoinstuff This is what I love about my viewers, you guys are so smart! After reading your comment It made me think more about the issue and it possibly being a wireless headset issue.
