I love the idea that someone was going around writing reviews of pub signs, and that these reviews have survived the ravages of time.

Just been reading Alice Loxtons book Uproar about the 18th century and the satirical print trade , it seems that images where quite rare on the streets not like today when there are so many, so when a new pub sign was put up it was quite the event to go and look at it and yes some one would review the work! we are bombarded by imagery all day long now, how different it must have been back then.

Looking at the distaff she is spinning from, it is possible that Mrs Calvert is spinning flax/linen rather than wool. It will be interesting to see what type of wheel she is using when you clean the lower right hand side.

Always pleasing to see the dirt and varnish come off. But more pleasing to see what is revealed. Your walking history tour is very interesting. Who knows what lies beneath the modern streets, or is encased in modern buildings. Thank you!

@@Bloomfield_Art_Restoration I understand. I live where a major civil war battle was fought. Troops were on the subdivision land my house is on. They camped 800 feet from my house. The city keeps building on the battlefield, destroying history. It’s sad. Your artwork reveals so much history and is a way in which those people recorded history, just as death masks have been made for millennia. Your history research adds a lot to your videos. Even if it isn’t the history of my country it is still interesting! By the way, I have metal detected civil war artifacts in my yard and down the street. I found a bullet that had molar impressions in it. Sometimes the troops chewed on the large lead bullets.

Love that this is a mature woman spinning. It makes it seem more realistic especially with the nose I’m sure she wasn’t happy with it but I feel like it enhances her beauty by being a contrast.

Interesting subject -- quite a dramatic change once the dirt and yellowed varnish goes away. Sorry it's not getting a full restoration, I'm sure there's lots more you could do for Mrs Calvert. You seem to be soliciting feedback about your videos, so I'll offer this: I'm not uninterested in the walking tour of Manchester, but I think that, rather than filming your 'talking head' moving through the area, show us the area and add the description as a voice over. The audio would be just as interesting, and much more clear without all the extraneous traffic noise and wind noise. Besides, walking down a city street with a phone held up in front of you and chatting away is just asking for a collision. I do enjoy your videos and look forward to more progress with dear Mrs Calvert. Thank you!

What was the typical price of a portrait in that area for that time period? That price he was charging doesn't seem like very much.

It reminds me of a Gilbert Stuart in the Smithsonian Catherine Brass Yates, nearly same costume the sitter in that portrait is threading a needle.

I doubt it’s one of Baumgartner’s. The finish on the tacking edge and backing aren’t consistent. Lady of the Manor was a different sitter and artist.
