The Vauxhall Ampera is a brilliant solution to eco-friendly motoring. It's amazingly efficient, it completely eliminates range anxiety, and it's comfortable and relaxing to drive.
It's far from cheap to buy, and there's huge uncertainty over its residual values. The cabin plastics aren't particularly appealing and rear visibility is rubbish

Servicing costs are INSANE. Can only be serviced by select dealers and they have you by the short and curlies. They sure know how to charge,

The Ampera is completely different from a normal electri vehicle because the 1.4L engine is not connected to the wheels is Only function is to work as Generator to produce Electricity to the Electric Engine = 238 mpg . the car can go from 0 to 100 mph maintaining Exactly the same Engine RPM because the 1.4 L petrol engine is basically a Electricity Generator (if needed)

@MarcelZager Vauxhall was an independent manufacturer, In 1925, the company was purchased by GM. Opel was GMs German subsidiary and in the early 80s, The Vauxhall brand was dropped in Ireland in 1982 and other countries, however due to the vauxhall brand being so strong in the UK it didn't favour GM to change to name.

@Charliedog214 Just a thougth: It might be because both Opel an Chevy are GM brands and the Volt/Ampera is developed by them TOGETHER! The electric motor and e-Rev drivingsystem is a GM developed system!

The actual answer is ... the generator requires premium because the generator then provides 7% more spark, thus more charge to the battery. The loss in price of gas is made up by the more efficient spark. Diesel has no spark plugs, (it is combusted by compression) and can't give enough spark to make the car run as efficiently. It's all about mpg with the Volt. The Ampera took 1st place in the Monte Carlo Alternative Fuel Rally (4 in top 10).

I wish it could sell in Europe for the same price as the Volt. Looks like it's about $9k over the volt's price. That way if the Volt doesn't survive in the states, it may still gain popularity elsewhere.

@iwo2024 Actually, diesel electric locomotives don't have a traction battery at all. The diesel engine powers the motors directly.

It's a plug in hybrid, not an all electric vehicle. It's like a Hybrid, but you have to plug it in to charge the battery.
@iwo2024

This is how train locomotive engines work. It always runs on electric, you can hear the diesel engines charging the battery when the train pulls away. This principle has been running for decades now. Car manufacturers I'm sure were aware of this, only because the world is moving onto electric powered vehicles (thanks to smaller manufacturers) the 'big boys' don't want to miss out on the lucrative profits they can make.

Actually the Chevy Volt is an Ampera.GM has been taking Opel design and tech and using in their chevy cars for a while now all be it with slight mods to make it look like it was their idea.

In future, yes..., but that's if the product stays the same... which it won't. Nice mention of the 747 though, glad someone still sees its significance and isn't wrapped up in A380 infatuation.

I don't understand what you are replying to? I was commenting on how in the video it was said that it is not an electric vehicle and then in the very next sentence it says that it is an electric vehicle. Whether the car is actually considered "fully electric" or not is irrelevant to the point being made.
@ra5928
@ra5928 12 жыл бұрын
Yes, but it can be used as an electric vehicle by folks who need a city driver only. I have used only 8 gallons of gas since October 6, just over 5,000 miles. When comparing ranges, there really is no advantage when your comute is under 40 miles. Most don't know that you are supposed to plug in at all times. You don't wait until the battery is depleted. So 80 miles range is not an advantage in that instance. Why buy a Volt? I own 1 car. Leaf owners need 2.

brilliant! the next step will be this type of car but with a gas turbine powering the generator, then you will be able to use many types of fuel.

i think a little contradiction is at workhere it's not a hybrid or an electric vehicle its an EREV , extended range ELECTRIC VEHICLE, also not a hybrid, like a prius though, petrol and electric, the prius is a hybrid, same technology but different name?????

Of course Top Gear built a car like this first XD. My total commute is 50 miles, if this is as good as the reviews say I'd only be using "10 miles worth" of petrol a day, I bet the road tax is sod all too, and no congestion charge either, because all cities in Britain will have it eventually. Though how a same-sized but eco friendly vehicle makes 'less congestion' is anybodys guess...

you are trying to Explain something that you also fail to understand . Lets compare this car with Prius a prius has 2 engines which are both connected to the wheels , it runs on Electric below certain speeds above this speeds the petrol engine kicks in and the Prius run as normal petrol engine = 74 mpg . The Ampera is completely different because the 1.4L engine is not connected to the wheels is Only function is work as Generator to produce Electricity to the Electric Engine = 238 mpg

In $ this car would still cost 630.000 Danish Kroner or $ 115.000. For the same money in Denmark, you can have an Audi A6 3.0 V6 and others in the same class. A different nose, does not make any difference. It is still to expensive!

The first 40 miles is battery powered and the rest is ran on petrol so what's the point? If it's not costing me fuel money my electricity bill is going up. What a stupid idea. This is 1 step backwards not forwards.

and laundry softeners will bancrot. Do you think that's logical? Same thing here. They got tehnology to make cars which will move by power of the Sun? Why not? Because they can sell oil, and fuel first, then they will make hybrid, to sell oil and fuel with electricity also. Then they will make full electricity car, to sell el. power, then they will make half sun-half el, then for like 100 years of taking our money, they will make full sun powered car. Homework to think about it.
