From Thingiverse to Finger - Casting a Silver tiger ring with Bluecast X10 - inspired by Gthic

Inspired by a silver ring sent to me by Gthic, I had a go at designing a split shank tiger ring. I adapted an STL file from Thingiverse, 3D printed it with castable resin and then cast the ring in silver. Making jewellery at home with precious metals has never been easier thanks to free software, 3D printers and castable resins :-)

I do have to say, for someone who claims to be beginner at blender, this was a very commandable and impressive example of your skills. Wonderful work and great casting. Positive critic: when you do silver casting, you could do a small math equation to use less silver when casting. Also, Id recommend, if you do not like the clean up and polishing process, to look into a tumbler to burnish and polish the surface of your pieces. There are multiple alternative that could simplify and ease the process for you. :) Have a good day Sincerely, a fan.

Strictly speaking, would you polish it only reasonably just in places of highlights and tiger stripes, and add few small features (like cuts) representing the fur, it would be totally professional looking ring. I definitely like your sculpt better than the original one (I like cats with a longer nose). I am glad you did the striping differently than they did - it highlights the difference in the thin deep cut versus wider cuts you used. I seem several different ways online to polish and leave contrast in the low spots. How would it change the look of the ring if you tumbled it in walnut shell media before final hand polish vs. just doing the hand polish? My guess is that the contrast would be lighter, but I have no experience (nor the right equipment) to test that.
@vogman
@vogman 4 жыл бұрын
My fear with tumbling is losing the shaded spots. These recesses are really very fine, probably a fraction of a mm in places. Sanding allows me to bridge over the recesses, but it did take time. I've no doubt professionals probably laugh at my awkward approach : )

IDEA! Before sawing off the sprue: solder a wire to the sprue, coat the whole ring in nail polish except for the eyes n nose, dip ring in vinegar to clean tarnish from nose n eyes, electroplate nose n eyes in a copper sulfate solution, remove nail polish with acetone, proceed with normal clean up operations.

As i'm reading this and thinking that's how i would do it.. i then think of sponge plating? Not sure thats what its called, but where they just hook the electricity to a q-tip or sponge, dip it in electrolyte and then stick the swab on the spot you want plated. I've never actually done that technique of electroplating, but I'd sure try it. I see people plating things like bumpers that would require a large electroplating tank. Using that technique they don't need a tank at all and can even leave it on the vehicle.

Stoppppp!!! I cannot keep up :) Bricks arrived for the Furnace, Mars sitting idle.. I need a vacuum machine and...and...and... lol. Anymore and I will explode. :) OK How about a short video on smoothing a part in Blender? I just seem to get the small triangles you do initially and cannot seem to smooth them. Thanks again.
@vogman
@vogman 4 жыл бұрын
Ha ha! Brilliant. I'm glad you're enjoying the process. Ignore the triangles. When you work on these small pieces it's easy to get carried away smoothing the blender file seeking perfection. But the chances are the perfection you're seeking wouldn't even show up in a print, so don't chase it. Concentrate on forming the big features : )
@WhiteDieselShed
@WhiteDieselShed 4 жыл бұрын
Probably the issue, zoom in 5000% and everything looks bad. Trying to smooth out something thats 10x smaller than the smallest pixel on the printer. But I know its there and thats the issue. I have an STL of a Morris Mini Cooper. Great detail seats, dash and engine parts but lots of zero thickness parts and parts that intersect badly. Left and right sides not mirrored so inconsistent. Tried fixing it a dozen times and always restart it. Best one was enlarging and making it like a baloon. Zoom out and it looks good.
@vogman
@vogman 4 жыл бұрын
Sometimes you've just got to let go of the idea of perfection. Believe me, that's very hard for me personally to do, but it really is worthwhile in so many cases. As for detailed models, a viewer sent me a Vespa file she'd purchased and couldn't print. When I looked at the file, yes it was detailed, but there were dozens of parts not connected - so there was NO WAY it could print. Things can't float in the air. They have to be attached. I ended up connected pieces with cubes, cylinders, etc. The end result, when printed, looked exactly like it should... sometimes doing the wrong thing is the right way : )

Hi, I have just discovered your channel, your creations and contents are fantastic. On others videos you mention bronzal , ( 10% al 90% cu by weight), could you please explain how it is better than brass ? Does it give more details ? I could not find much on google except melting temp which seems to be 100 C higher. Thanks !
@vogman
@vogman 4 жыл бұрын
Metals are often just a preference. A lot of folks enjoy working in brass. I'm no metallurgist so I can't give you much advice, but from my point of view, I prefer bronzal. Brass gives of toxic fumes when melted as is fairly soft. Whilst it flows nicely and takes shape well, so does bronzal, but bronzal is safer and has the advantage of also being stronger. I hope this helps : )

Hey hello mate, i have a question. I tried to cast this way bronze. It does this black burnt like surface on thé cast m Is it perhaps too high temperature of molten metal? I cast it at 1100C. Also the investment gets little hard at thé cast surface. Thanks a lot for reply.
@vogman
@vogman 4 жыл бұрын
It depends on your bronze. Silicone Bronze does oxidise. Aluminium Bronze doesn't. Both will clean up very nicely with fine sanding : )

@@vogman thank You for an answer again! btw I just found out that my problem is too high temperature of molten metal. That can apparantly cause penetration of a surface of porus molds. Just in case You run into this as well. You take care and I am looking forward to see another video of yours. You are the one who brought me to the whole furnace thing after all haha :)

With that plaster container you have that's got all the holes in it, couldn't you FDM print a bucket to go over it that you remove before putting it into the burn out instead of having to tape it every time?

Yours looks more ... Tigery. At one point though, in Fusion, it did sort of remind me of Godzilla. : ) I just got one of those electric furnaces, 3kg. I'm wondering, have you melted non-noble metals in it, and if so, did you notice any adverse effects in the crucible? I'm planning to melt mostly tin and zinc in mine with occasional copper and aluminum.
