I've never had a person get in my Element and not say something along the lines of "wow, this is a lot bigger inside than it looks". There's no vehicle that even comes close to its versatility.

You can fit a fully assembled snowblower in the back of an element. I've actually bought 2 used snow blowers both sellers when helping me load the machine into the car said this is a very nice utilitarian vehicle.

First generation Scion xb comes close. And anyone who sits in the back seats is amazed at the amount of room. It is smaller, but gas mileage is better. Trade offs… I've had my xb for 20 years, driven >250k mi, and it's only needed regular maintenance. I change the oil every 5k miles.

Thanks for the well made documentary of Honda Element. I own a 2004 Element EX AWD which has 260k KM on it. The body still has its original paint with no rust. I love its interior space and vinyl floor. The 2 things I consider imperfections are its fuel economy and its choppy ride -> hence ride noise. The struts of the car have been replaced already, I will start to do same to suspension bushings.

The problem as I see it is Honda never developed the Element. They kept the trims and look essentially throughout it's run. The biggest issue though is they didn't think big enough. If they decided to go more in an off road direction it would have sold better. Beef up the power and suspension and make it a bit competitive to a Jeep and that would have attracted more buyers. Added more adventure accessories like a roof tent, camping, surfing, biking and climbing amenities for the interior and it would have really attracted a demographic.
@Reach3DPrinters
@Reach3DPrinters 3 ай бұрын
Thats interesting. Definitely beef up the suspension would have opened a new market for Honda. I really like the fact the engine is so reliable and smaller though. like improve the gearing so it has plenty of torque when needed, but doesn't waste power either. A lot of the larger trucks these days just simply don't need to have as much raw power as the engines provide, which kills fuel economy. I see soo many massive trucks that people use as grocery getters. Trucks that have never worked a day in their lives. I have an E250 hightop that has hauled all sorts of stuff, cars and what not, and I suspect a 150 would have just about done what was needed, hard on suspension pulling 5000lbs though. There just seems to be so much pressure for guys to buy big trucks when they are very impractical. A cargo van and trailer has such much more functionality than a truck. The rare case I need to haul a fridge and not lay it flat, I just use a trailer. Aside from moving tall uprights, its only advantages to have interior cargo space. My van converts into a family camper with bench seats/bed, kitchen, etc.

I think that's the thing... the Honda Element is all about utility and economy. Hard to sell to a market base that wants utility and economy because those people typically don't buy brand new cars. So now that they have lost their expense, and have become economic to buy, $5k, they are highly prized and attainable by the intended market.

When they first came out I considered getting one for my wife. The dealership let me take one home overnight to test. I was sold, until I realized its fatal flaw. Considering all the room available inside, they're made to legally carry only four people! Imagine how many families Honda alienated by keeping them from being able to own an Element just because they were only made to legally seat four people! Kia sold more Souls because having seating for five people, drastically increased its consumer base.

I bought a used Element from my sister-in-law. At first I didn't want to buy it, since it is so boxy, but I started running a small lawn business, and it is great for that. I took out the back seats entirely, just a few latches had to be released, and it has plenty of room in the back for my mower and other tools. The original sound system has given out, after 15 years, so I am working on replacing it, but other than that, the car is still in great shape at about 150K miles. Going to hold on to it for as long as I can.

My 2006 EXP just got in a wreck and the insurance wanted to total it. No air bags deployed and it was a minor front end, they just gave me $3300.00 for me to keep it ( or $4400.00 to total it) and I had to put in another $1000.00 even though I had full coverage. It runs great and kept clean like new. Insurance is a scam. It's crazy how many people in the parking lot ask me if I wanted to sell it for around $5,000.00 even with $178,000 miles. No way I was gonna sell it for salvage.

I still have my 2006 Element that I bought new. I got a great deal on it because it is a 5-speed and today's generation can't text while shifting gears. So it sat on the dealership lot for a year until the dealership manager finally caved in and sold it to me for a song. It was meant to be a replacement for my beloved 1999 CR-V which I also bought new. My daughter has it now. My CR-V was my "Willys Jeep" with 4 cylinders. My Element is my hauler for furniture, BIG dog, drum set, bicycles (I can walk them in and hang them from the handle above the back passenger door without disassembly), garden tools, mulch, etc and bags of clothes for the local Safehome. If you just read everything I use it for, you will see why the Element failed. Honda underestimated its uses when it marketed it for the young surfer dudes and rock climbers. They should have marketed it for people like me, the utilitarian homeowner, pet owner, hobbyist and musician. My local Honda dealership said they sold every automatic Element they ever got, before it arrived on the lot from the distributor and that American Honda was crazy to kill it. They've been trying to get me to trade it in or sell it back to them every time I take it in for service. My Element has been super-reliable and economical in spite of being as aerodynamic as a brick. However, on that note, I will admit that it is a bit scary to drive on the interstate in high winds because it becomes a "box-kite". It is light and it is a broad target for the wind. I will NEVER get rid of my Honda Element.

Owned both the element and the gen 1 Ridgeline. Honda had amazing quality, innovation, and versatility during those days. Unfortunately never could appeal to the demographics it wanted to. Both vehicles are now highly appreciated...at least in my area of the US now. Cars a decade or two before their time. Would buy a Ridgeline again if it didn’t get 16mpg, have subpar electronics, and cheap interior materials. The second gen Ridgeline is disappointing compared to the OG. I’d buy a new Element if they could 2nd-gen it without destroying it like they did the Ridgeline by pandering to demographics that wouldn’t ever consider it in the first place.

Loved Elements since I saw my first one, but wasn’t ready to buy another car. I would’ve been happy with ANY one..... didn’t matter..... but for me, when the SC came out, I made the emotional buying decision to buy one... no matter what! So, my dealer had an brand new Alabaster Silver SC auto on the showroom floor with five miles on it, and I snatched it up! Now.... almost 13 years later, it has 84,000 miles on it. I’ve had 16 Honda’s since 1973, and my SC is absolutely my favorite! And..... as I am an anal car nut, it’s still 100% original and in flawless condition. 100% reliable all these years. Best Honda I’ve ever had.... and I’ve had some good ones! I’m a Honda fan, but I am somewhat irritated that Honda let the Element die..... oh well, like some Element owners say, “ I’ve got mine”!!! One more thing, if you’re looking at a well cared for used one, buy that sucker!!

Bought a new 2005 manual 2wd Element as a dog/snowboard/kiteboard/etc vehicle. At the time I had several very nice cars. I've since parted with the rest and plan to keep the Element indefinitely. Garage-kept, often mistaken for new. Everything stock except ASA AR1 18" wheels which look great but not overdone. I love it for many reasons, including several rarely mentioned subtleties and the extraordinary i-Vtec engine. Finally changed spark plugs at 270,000 km/170,000 miles, and discovered they'd barely deteriorated. The manual transmission allows me to deploy fuel-economy tricks that regularly achieve 30 mi/US gal (>35 mi/imp gal;

The element is a CRV, with a full body and face lift. Internal organs are (exactly the same). So for that reason it goes down as one of the most reliable vehicles ever👍👍👍

Why are people so insistent on bringing it back? It will never be the same as the original and will be too expensive to buy new. I just bought mine, but knowing there aren't any being made makes it special to me.

I regret selling my 03 Galapagos Green Element. 18 years later this thing is still engineering magic. Bring it back as a greenymobile. make it battery powered so it can finally appeal to the libs they were seeking in the first place. 🌲 🫂 or for someone like myself that they were targeting in the first place but has now aged like fine wine.

a ltitle misleading about john frye, i actually talked to him about the element and yes he did concept drawings and held the patent it was actually Bernard Lee who is credited with the design, Bernard went on to design all the Telsa's and currently works for tesla. He designed both the honda model x and the tesla model x, how funny.

GuntherSnaps true! I was one of the modelers at the time. It was the first project I was on out of school. I have never owned one though. I’m thinking of getting one now as a beach camper vehicle here in the Northwest.

As the years go buy people are loving the honda element. I have one myself, never regret buying it. It is an amazing car. All my friend that I take with me in my car say that the honda is bigger than it looks. My girlfriend and I went camping in it and we had room to sleep inside and with enough space to have are food, drinks, and other. The best part is that it is cheap on gas. My gas last a long time. Even with me driving it to work 5 time a week and going out. It cost me 30 dollars to fill it the gas tank.

When it first came out, I recall being torn between attraction for its quirky look, but at the same time ridiculing it for the same thing. I didn't think too much about it afterwards. I had a Jeep Liberty around the same time, but I went through a tough time later and surrendered it to the bank. I've had a few great cars since then, but I've found myself craving the extra height for visibility and the roominess when I hauled things around. Knowing how unreliable the Jeep Liberty is (especially after hearing nightmare stories in person from nearly every owner of almost every model of Jeep) I started looking around for something akin to it. One thing that always impressed me about my Hondas were how solid and reliable they were. They all needed to have parts replaced over time, but they were the usual things like bushings, brakes, tires, etc. All the same things as any other vehicle out there. I started looking at different models of Honda. The CRV looked like a good candidate except I disliked how "soccer mom" it looked. I may be a middle aged man, but I don't want something that yells "grocery grabber." It was mostly the same with the Pilot. Then I saw an Element. The boxy look, the quirky styling, then finding out about the interior made it much more attractive. I especially liked that there wasn't any carpet to stress about when I spilled a drink or climbed in after schlepping through snow or rain. I have friends that are incredibly messy and have splashed coffee or dropped food like tacos, fries, etc. I can't count how many times I fumed and spent a lot of time wiping, scrubbing, shampooing, vacuuming, etc, and in one extreme case getting help from a mechanic friend to remove the front seats to take out the carpet so I could power wash it. I ought to tell my friends to walk, but hey, they're great friends in spite of having the manners of crap slinging monkeys. I'm looking around for an Element now but so far haven't found any that are the right one -- yet.

Honda is great. Lots of respect for their design and engineering. Their marketing however, pretty much misfires. My heart goes out to their technical prowess yet the products they choose are not always the best choice for the market. The Indian market for example is a huge one. Honda just needs to dig into its retro car and bike stable. No one seems to be able to tell them that.
