Makes 6 to 7
2 ½ cups warm water
1-teaspoon salt
2 cups precooked corn flour (PAN)
Butter
Place the water in a bowl and add the salt. Mix.
Slowly add the flour and mix with a spoon. Finish mixing with your hands until you have a non-sticky dough. Let it rest for a few minutes.
Place some oil in a bowl with water. Wet your hands and make a ball of dough. Squish it into a disk and form it while you spin it in your palms.
Place the arepas under a damp kitchen rag.
Heat your oven to 350 degrees F (176 C).
Melt some butter in a skillet (preferably cast iron). Place the arepas on it and brown - flipping a few times.
Place the browned arepas in the oven and bake for about 10 minutes until completely cooked through.
Handle the arepas carefully as they are hot. Cut the arepas open leaving an edge intact to form a pocket. Add a little bit of butter in the middle and fill with your filling of choice. Enjoy!

Thank you for sharing this video. I am from Venezuela and this is wonderful. Just a tip. I used to put some oil in the dough or butter, so the dough is softer, and I put a little bit more of water, the consistency should be softer and easier to knead and less thick and hard. Oven yes, depends on what city/state are you coming from. Barquisimeto, for example, they put them in the oven and are thick. Caracas (and mostly the whole country) just in a got pan for a while and are thin. San Cristóbal, are big and thin (sometimes skinny) and sometimes fried.Good job here!

This is, hands down, the BEST instructional video on making arepas I've seen. I have had to alter them due to my husband being sodium sensitive and we went vegan. Fyi, I used my Ninja Foodie grill rather than my cast iron skillet (same one as video) to streamline it. I replaced the salt with 2 teaspoons of Yondu, look it up! Bringing total sodium from around 2300 mg to 700 mg....I got 8 cakes from it and that averages around 87 mg per cake and the taste is amazing. I used Miyoko's vegan butter. Set the Foodie on BBQ Grill at 400 deg and brown as video shows, then when you have them browned, reset the Foodie to "Bake" 350 temp and 10 minutes, flip halfway through. I can only do 6 cakes at once but it doesn't take long. From a southern girl who has made cornbread several times a week and grew up on the stuff, this is super easy and a nice change of pace. The ONLY problem is waiting until they are cool enough to eat! Arepa corn flour is hard to find, even for us living in New Mexico now, and native New Mexicans don't even know about them at our local Mexican grocery store, so we ordered it from Amazon. I am allergic to wheat so it is great to find a nice sandwich bread that is not all that gluey mess of gluten free bread with little to no taste. And these are way easier to make and less tedious than making corn tortillas, of which I make more than I would care to. 😂

OH. MY. GOD! Thaaaaaaaank YOOOU! For sharing this so I can make some at home now! (IF I can find the flour!) I FINALLY found the sweet corn pancakes!!!!!! THESE, are to DIE FOR! with jelly, cream cheese, cheese- like a grilled cheese- especially if you make them & freeze them for later use, you can just popped out, heat'em in the microwave for about 45 seconds & they're good to go with whatever topping you want to use! After the last 2-3 years of searching, I was under the impression that these were a Peruvian food- as the woman I used to cook with in NJ, was Peruvian, she used to make these almost every other day! They were HUGE at block parties in NJ. 🤣😂 I bet you Fetty Wap had a few too! I lived in NJ when he did a concert at East Side High school, for a Spring Concert! It was pretty dope! I'll NEVER forget the day I heard his name on the radio tho. Humbling to know of someone who made something out of themselves and got out of bad areas & neighborhoods! (I will NOT speak on the area I used to live in, in Patterson, NJ. Its a nice place to live but there ARE issues with where I was living at the time. Unsure if things are still like that there. Each area, town, city & place, has its own pros and cons just like everywhere else. You can't have the light without the dark! Thats "Life". I fell in love with them! They're so thick, and a much more "meaty-er" dough to use & cook with! So while hunting & searching for the yellow box she had bought this stuff in- I realized, when I got back to NY- Upstate, NY- the REAL "Upstate, NY"- as in, if I throw a rock off my front porch, I'll hit a Canadian Border patrol agent, in the head. I'm less than 10 min from the Canadian border- in NY.

I will be looking for Pan in the store. Just googled it and you can use the cornmeal and let it sit for 15 mins, because I just made it and it works, the issue is if you do not use Pan, you have to let it sit and absorb, i added just some extra hot water, but my cornmeal at home was coarse Delicious, Delicious, delicious.............I filled mine with sauteed scallions........delicious thank you for the recipe

This is a wonderful tutorial! I think it is because you love making these that the process is so easy to learn from you. I have recently gone gluten free and it has improved how I feel so very much. There are certain tricks to learn when working with other flours, like how much baking powder varies by a lot, but I never would have known the different flours we have easy access to without wheat gluten giving my body a hard time. The masa doesn't cost nearly what some of the others do, and I love the taste. Thank you.

I live in a small city with a large hispanic population and a new group of food trucks opened up close to my home and one is a Venezuelan truck that makes Arepas. Had my first like 3 weeks ago with a friend and we're both hooked. The ones they sell from the truck are largely meats (chicken, pork, beef) and cheese. Oh man, they're so good. And so filling too. They don't look big but I finish one and I feel like I ate too much (in a good way).

In some sites I read they calling the Harina PAN generic. Harina PAN is the original one. The others are copy or generic of the Harina PAN. Harina PAN is the one that invented how to make this kind of Harina on a industrial level back in the 60s in Venezuela !!!! Excellent video !!

Thank you Pedro! The harina PAN that we use here is actually milled in Greenville, Texas about an hour away from Dallas. I am happy you like this video!

@@Thefrugalchef Yes that the same Harina we buy here in New York. Harina PAN belongs to Alimentos Polar in Venezuela. I guess the are partners with this mill in Texas

All the Hispanic aisle in my grocery store has is stuff for tacos =__= I always stock up on P.A.N. when I go visit home. Anyway, thanks for this video! For some reason I can never get my arepas right, so I hope this tutorial helps when I make them tonight :D Personally, I love filling mine with butter and a slice of mozzarella cheese. That, a bottle of malta, and a side of platanos is a perfect meal

What temperature is your warm water? I know when you use the spray 110°F is that about right.
