The city of Venice with its picturesque canals has long drawn visitors from around the world. But the city's charm has a downside, too: Venice is suffering from too much tourism.
This week it became the first city in the world to charge tourists a fee to enter. Anyone visiting the city for a day trip must pay five euros during a trial which runs through most of July. It's hoped the fee will help protect the UNESCO World Heritage Site from overtourism.
For more on this, we talk to Jane da Mosto. She's the Co-Founder and Executive Director of "We are here Venice" - a local organization 'dedicated to the conservation of Venice as a living city’.

@@matthewyabsley Fair enough, I admit my comment and the original comment was redundant. I do disagree with the assertion that Venice will be preserved and inhabited for centuries in the future, I think we will see a mass exodus from coastal areas and flood plains, especially Venice into more inland areas partially due to climate change and rising sea levels. At some point it's going to cost more to defend Venice from the water than the revenue the city generates and at that point we will see a mass exodus and eventually it will become uninhabited and underwater. I admit this scenario is a ways away though. I agree with your assessment that building in Venice will become more focussed on flood prevention as it already is but as far as I'm aware there's not that many new builds in Venice.

That’s rubbish. If you can afford to fly from the US to Venice you can afford 5 Euros, or even 25 Euros. Think how much 1 ride costs at Disneyland. The huge numbers of tourists traveling to most of the popular visitor destinations around the world are damaging the culture, the infrastructure, the historical and natural sites, not to mention the crowds of people everywhere . Tourists should pay to cover the net loss to a tourist destination that their presence incurs. Yes, businesses do well, but taxes on them do not fully pay for infrastructure repairs and maintenance, rubbish handling, additional police, etc. I can't imagine that anyone who really wants to walk the streets of Rome, or Venice, or any tourist destination, would bridle at paying what it costs the place to host them!

To the extent that the fee acts as a deterrent, that's good. And of course the money will be welcome to address the wear and tear excess tourism brings. But why not charge even more? These tourists are the same ones who will blithely spend hundreds of dollars in the US to enter Disneyland or Disneyworld, far less wonderful places than Venice, and then pay overinflated prices for food and souvenirs and various land and boat rides. Why can't Venice charge €50? even €75? They could even offer 2-day or 3-day passes at a less-per-day rate. Then of course they could offer free or reduced-rate entry for groups of students and folks over 70. Venice is entertainment for the huge majority of tourists: why not have them pay the going rate?

Are they going to dump sewage someplace else? ;) Ask the same of New York, big money made over the years, but where does their sewage go? ;)

For EU citizens also? What about Freedom of movement or Schengen Agreement that applies to EU citizens? Don't get me wrong. I love the idea to force Americans and Asian tourist to pay even more!!!

I assume it applies to non Italians, so EU citizens as well. I don't think this is illegal as you're still able to have free movement it just costs a little to enter one city, I mean that would be like saying you shouldn't pay to visit a historical landmark in any EU nation if you're an EU citizen.

Agreed. No matter where a tourists comes from, they use fresh water, and generate trash, sewage, and wear and tear everywhere they go. If you want a city to host you, then be prepared to pay what it actually costs. Otherwise you contribute to their distress for your personal entertainment.

@@whatgoesaroundcomesaround920 Tourists also pay a value-added tax of up to 22% and fees to visit places. And let's keep mind all the Italian workers who are employed in Venice due to tourism. Not only do they pay VAT too, they and their employers also pay other tax such as that on income. Venice is a 'living city' in large part due to tourism. You don't see any steel mills and chemical plants providing alternative employment there, do you? It's a money grab. Five euros will dissuade no one. This tells us the authorities still want all the tourists and use the claim of 'over tourism' not to reduce tourism but to fleece a few more euros from them.

It should've been higher than 5 Euro... 50⍷ would be ideal to enter such beautiful city.
