@ThisisBarris 5 жыл бұрын
@@Nozylatten In all honesty, 6 months ago, I've purged away from all news and social media (but youtube) because I was obsessing over politics/economics so I haven't followed much. I just know you don't win trade wars "easily" nor is it ever beneficial. There is this story that goes: "I have this incredible machine that allows me to turn Midwest wheat into Japanese cars - trade" and that's true. So really we are shooting ourselves in the foot. But since the trade war is happening, and saying we shouldn't do it is kinda pointless, the truth is the US will win simply because we don't rely on exports/imports that much. The US is not a country, it's more like the EU and a lot of US production and consumption is very national. It's also the biggest market worldwide and so everyone wants to sell to it. So there is definitely a lot in favor of the US. But again, that will come at a huge cost, especially today when supply chains are worldwide and any change can have significant impacts. It's no longer so simple as "we produce in the US'", it's x part of the car is produced in y country, assembled in b, painted in d and sold in t. Trying to bring back manufacturing to the US is misunderstanding the complexity and purpose of these systems. Also, the idea that trade/deficits destroyed jobs, especially with China, is just wrong. Over 80% of job destruction has been put on automation - Germany which has a SURPLUS with China still saw similar job reduction in the manufacturing industry since the 2000s.

you cover the time btwn 1099-1123 but you start with 1123, then half way thru go to 1099. why not stick with chronological time so its easier to fit pieces together from historic events already learned. ?

So Venice really hung in there. Tell me, am I remembering correctly that Tyre eventually " silted" and thus no longer an important harbor ?

What happened to the city of Ascalon (Aschelon), was it taken by the Crusader States or did it remain in Fatamid hands for years to come? The High Middle Ages were such exciting times, at least for us sitting here behind a desk with little chance of being massacred by ravaging fanatics and bloodthirsty merchants.

Remained in Fatimid hands for quite a while to come. We'll go into it in future episodes.

Your best narration yet. Really enjoyed the stories added. However, for the love of Antioch, consider that the presentation of the maps is all over the place. This makes things very confusing for someone not completely familiar with the geopolitical maps of that period. For example, the maps frequently jump back and forth in time, often without dates, even though the narrative is moving forward after the introduction. During the siege of Tyre, it's hard to find the city on the map, and when you do, the map paints it as controlled by the crusaders, when this runs counter to your own narrative. There is even what looks like a modern day map of Isreal thrown in at 18:38! Maps are big for us visual people, great maps and chronological order just makes things so much easier to understand.

Thanks! I am a one man team- First and foremost I'm a writer - I had absolutely no skills in video production prior to a year ago. Now that I'm finally not losing money on the channel I'm hoping to concentrate on learning how to make videos, or getting somebody else on board to do that side of things.

I agree, but don’t sweat it. If I gave my kid a map and a Thomas guide, he’d never be able to even leave the street. I think the narration is much more important.🤷‍♀️. JMHO.

Venice and Croatian conflict (I say Croatia not Hungary because the kingdom of Croatia fought Venice before the union with Hungary) played a big part in croatian history. The proof of that are the books writen by one of the great croatian novel writers August Šenoa with the title "Čuvaj se Senjske ruke" (beware the hand from Senj - literal translation) about Uskoci (croatian guerilla/pirates) fighting the Venice occupation.

Hi, I love your videos ! But it drives me nuts when historians of antiquities use the word "decimate". Yes, it has unfortunately become representative of a large amount of destruction, however it also specifically refers to a 1/10 destruction of roman unit for cowardice. Sorry, just had to get that out. (Decimation count for this video: 3 )

Thanks for the reply. It is a good word to use :) I 'm just trying to figure out how close to the romans can we get before we revert to its roman meaning. The progression of language does certainly change meaning over time and there are many roman words that today mean very different things to us. Anyways, thanks again for creating videos that are engaging, well researched and entertaining. I'm a history fanatic and your videos are always excellent. Cheers!
