Venture2Roam Overlanding

Will and Chris head out Overlanding in the Rain to test their gear. A rain and snow storm cancelled their plans to have a much larger adventure, but they found a window in the weather to camp in the rain before the larger storm set in. While it was only a single night trip, a lot happened, including being accused of claim jumping a mining claim on the Boise River!

Fire starting technique is important. Good striker but bad technique. Great video 👍🏻

Thanks for watching! How would you have used the rod differently?
@David-Drums
@David-Drums Жыл бұрын
@@Venture2Roam well there’s few different tricks to get rod fires faster but a quick one would be hold the rod closer right over the smaller kindling area and pull the rod up not push the knife down. By pulling the rod all the sparks are directed straight down into a smaller area right on the kindling.
@Venture2Roam
@Venture2Roam Жыл бұрын
@@David-Drums Thanks for sharing..I hope folks read this because your comment is a great tip. Using ferro rods is something we're both still learning. This definitely wasn't a "how to" start a fire vid lol...I think Chris actually did it correctly, or intended to anyway...the clips I showed in the vid are mostly of when he was super frustrated so maybe not perfect form...but he tried all three ways of using the rod...probably could have gotten it closer to the tinder though...or just slowed down. In hindsight we also should have shaved off some of the rod into the tinder to help it catch. I really love that you brought it up...so if folks are watching and wondering, they can see this info in the comments and search for an instructional vid on correct form.

Virtually all unpatented federal mining claims are in multi-use areas, this means that anyone can camp on the area. The claim owner only has rights to the minerals which means the campers are not allowed to access minerals, they also can not stop the miners from mining.

Love your videos. Great work. Quick question. The ostrich awning do you like it better than the ovs you had? It seems smaller.
@Venture2Roam
@Venture2Roam Жыл бұрын
Full disclosure: Ostrich is a channel sponsor. That said..the Ostrich Jr Is lighter, stronger, faster, better canvas, and totally freestanding. It’s harder to install though, smaller, and more expensive. The smaller size doesn’t bother me at all, in fact it fits the Jeep better IMO. The OVS is a good value purchase though, I liked it and still recommend it to friends.

The claim is just for minerals not for the land. As long as you weren’t digging you would’ve been fine. If he tried intimidating you off camera I’d report it and they would probably lose the claim. That being said you did the right thing by calming things down and moving on, don’t need somebody sneaking up in camp later.

Kent - I'll put one together with Chris and post it asap. I think in general, Chris really likes it. It's roomy enough for his family of 4. He can leave bedding in it, although it's harder to close than other tents. It has a low pro design that's good for driving. Quick set up, a little slower pack away compared to my tent and the iKamper..but overall still much faster than a ground tent (for a fam of 4). However, there was an issue with the adhesive they used...which causes some crinkly noises whenever someone moves in the tent, and the quilt on the inside of the shell is coming off. That said, OVS is replacing the tent at no cost. We spoke to them at Overland Expo PNW and they were really quick to order a replacement when they discovered the issue. You can reach out to Chris directly in IG at @frontier_state_overland

Seems like you guys got pushed off the camp site? From my research and understanding his mining claim is actually public land for public use. It’s pretty messed up if he told you guys you can’t camp there. You should absolutely be able to.
@Venture2Roam
@Venture2Roam Жыл бұрын
Thanks for bringing this up. You are correct that it’s still public land, and we could have stayed there. The convo with the miners ended in very friendly terms…we just didn’t want to camp next to them because we wanted more privacy.

@@Venture2Roam I agree with Adventure Buddy 100% ... appears those dudes need to check their attitudes, especially if you were not mining. You were in no way claim jumping. Rolling up on someone with attitude can go many ways. Kudo's for you two keeping your cool ... it irritates the hell out of me these individuals who in their right have a legit claim, but treat it as their own private property.
