My analysis of General Grievous will focus specifically on the character as he is presented in Legends continuity, drawing from the Clone Wars microseries, the Dark Horse comics, and Revenge of the Sith Visual Dictionary, and the novels Labyrinth of Evil and Revenge of the Sith, ignoring his appearances in Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series and all of its tie-ins. Grievous as he is featured in Canon is a weak villain with an extremely inconsistent performance level, more plot device than character.
My analysis of Starkiller will be focused specifically on Galen Marek, the iteration featured specifically in The Force Unleashed I video game and all of its tie-ins, most notably the novelization by Sean Williams, the graphic novel by Haden Blackman, and the Star Wars roleplaying game supplement produced by Wizards Of The Coast. Though the matter is left deliberately vague within continuity, I firmly regard Starkiller as he is featured in The Force Unleashed II as a seperate character, the clone of Galen Marek. This in mind, I will be using Galen Marek's names and title interchangibly throughout this video.
So with all of that out of the way, let us begin: General Grievous and Starkiller, pawns of the Sith, two of the most successful Jedi hunters of their respective timeframes. If these two battlefield juggernaughts were to meet in single combat, who would win?

I’m predicting a solid win for Marek here, due to Force reliance. While, as you said, Anakin wouldn’t win because he doesn’t prefer to use the force in combat until it’s too late, Marek will look for any opportunities available to chain in the force to his attacks.

+Ironinquisitor yeah there is a chance he could do that and there is a chance Grievous could do a lot of evasive manuveurs to avoid those attacks like he was show to do. But I think Galen has a better chance of defeating Grievous since unlike most the Jedi he fought Galen is more likely to use offensive abilities.
@maxmustermann9058
@maxmustermann9058 6 жыл бұрын
Starkiller wins imo. Grievous benefited from the non-aggressive force use of most jedi he faced, he can't protect against lightning, him reflecting blaster shots once does not change that. Galen uses repulses and lightning against groups and cycles through attacks against force users, but against a single, charging tank of an opponent like Grievous, with blades, but without tk barrier, telekinetic crushing is the obvious response everyone capable of it would take. Basically the finishing argument is that Galen has a clear instant win button against GG, but would be unlikely to use it, because he did not always use the technique in other situations where it was not an instant win button. Just does not follow.

I'm very glad that you resumed the ending assessments that you began with Sylvar against Sedriss! This provides an immense and invaluable amount of context fro the characters, showing that the level of threat or capabilities that they have do not mean all of their skills are at the same echelon. You're quality, entertainment and assessments are continuing to improve with each video! I do have a couple of disagreements with your comments, but they are very small. Such as while Grievous' body was undoubtedly designed to match Force-users, his accomplishments and results surpassed several of them. He can even be comparable to the fortitude of Kyle Katar, the strength of Darth Malgus, and the speed of Yoda. While his mechanical processors and cyborg sensors can give him greater awareness and analysis than many Jedi can possess through their own senses. Also, would you possibly be open to consider added an strategic and tactical mindset component to your post-mortem analyses? Similar to Evannova95's Tactical assessments in his "How Powers Was..." series? While physicality, skills, and esoteric powers are are very impactful, the mindset and methods that character have to use them can be just as critical to their assessments and accomplishments. Especially in cases like Grevious where his strategic genius and silent mental/emotional attacks were essential to all of his greatest successes. The same impact can also be found in gaining a complete picture of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Plo Koon, Darth Vader, Corran Horn and Darth Caedus, Mace Windu, Darth Malak, Revan, Darth Bane, Luke Skywalker, Mara Jade Skywalker, Darth Maul, Exar Kun and Darth Malgus. -Kenobi's tactical mind was what distinguished him from Darth Zannah, and was critical in all of his greatest accomplishments. From subtly undermining an opponent to using minimalism to lead them to underestimate him and commit too far, to his famous use of Sokken, and his distraction of Darth Vader onboard the Death Star to allow Luke and Leia to escape and pass on a critical lesson to Luke. -Darth Maul's tactical mindset was what distinguished him the most during his life prior to Naboo. And is the most distinguished element between him and his presentation in TCW. -Plo Koon had a smaller combat skills-set than others at the Tier 2 or higher levels, and was quite strong but had an otherwise fragile body compared to others in his league. His pragmatic and intelligent mind-set in a fight was a driving force in his few lightsaber duels and was what made him such a successful and formidable fighter. -Corran Horn and Darth Caedus both utilized quite esoteric powers with an opportunistic mindset. Combining deception and tricks with genius-level mindset to defeat or survive against extremely dangerous foes, some of who did outclass them in the cases of Horn against Shedao Shai, and Caedus' fights with Katarn and Made Jade. -With Darth Vader, you have become quite renown for highlighting how critical his tactical mindset was to his duelling-style. -Mace Windu, despite his immense power and skill, was actually a very basic tactician during the heat of a battle. Even in cases where his Force-Powers could bring a more efficient and immediate end to a fight against Sora Bulq, Asajj Ventress, or Grevious himself, he opted for swordsmanship instead. His entire army was actually defeat on Dantooine due to his overcommitment to combat, resulting in a Pyhrric Victory. However, Windu was evidently one of the few who realized this and worked around it. In cases like the Battle of Ryloth in TCW and the invasion of Harrun Kai, he worked to ensure that everything was prepared in advance and that additional commanders were present so that he could cut-loose without leaving his forces leaderless, Geptun on Haruun Kai and Cham Syndulla on Ryloth. WIndu was powerful and i would not describe him as unintelligent. But he is comparatively outclassed tactically and strategically by Dooku, Kenobi, Grievous, Luke Skywalker, Lumiya, Shaak Ti, Yoda, Revan, Galen Merik, Darth Malak, Darth Maglus, and many others. Although he can be viewed as on-par with Kyle Katarn, Jaina Solo-Fel, Darth Bane and Qui-Gon Jinn, and can certainly outclasses Ventress, Fisto, Bulq, Ulic Qel-Droma, Anakin Skywalker, and Kyp Durron. -Darth Malgus was an anomaly among Sith characters, since he carried an even greater amount of hatred and rage than the standard amounts that they used. Yet whenever he ran into a serious challenge he would maintain his rage while increasing his self-control. Allowing him to become focused and creative without dialling-down his power. Assessing and ranking certain character's tactical inclination and strategic habits in your post-mortem analysis would add a greater level of coimpletionism to the videos and place their capabilities and accomplishments in stronger contexts. Also, on a personal note, would you be willing to providing an assessment of the Paragon vs. the Renegade to flush-out where Bane and Luke stood during those points of their careers? I found the video great, but the assessments of their magnitudes almost made Luke appear to be a Tier 2 or Tier 1.5 level threat while Bane was 3 or 2.5. These are possibly unlikely and unrealistic given how farther had to go in their lifetimes and, but your opinion on them would be an invaluable critique.

I always like your Grievous videos. It's interesting to think on different Jedi's reactions to the General's assault and his counter for them. Anakin's reaction to pressure is to rely on his dueling skills which were inferior to Grievous'. Marik's is to use his force powers which Grievous is optimized to either tank, dodge, or circumvent.

Great video--ultimately, in my mind it has to go to Grievous. As skilled as Starkiller is at pulling unlikely victories out of his ass, Legends Grievous is on a level far above anything Galen Marek can combat. The unfortunate bit about being a wunderkind is that you don't tend to know how to deal with starting to lose a fight, when you do what's always worked in the past, and that's what I see Galen doing here. He'll execute the same battle strategy he always has, and Grievous will see through it and pick out exactly how to cut him down. Some other matchups: Eeth Koth and Agen Kolar v. Maul and Savage Darth Nihl v. Kam Solusar Shaak Ti v. Luminara Unduli, Aayla Secura and Tiplar Count Dooku and Asajj Ventress (Legends) v. DoE Luke and Mara Jade Darth Vitiate v. Darth Plagueis T'ra Saa v. Darth Nihilus And as always.... Darth Vectivus v. Master Faye

I was hoping against hope that Galen Marek would win. But after watching this, I realized something: Darth Vader, as Anakin Skywalker, had never fought an opponent of General Grievous' caliber. And I can see why PROXY wasn't given extra arms for a Grievous module. So we can conclude that, due to a lack of proper training, Galen wouldn't have stood a chance. Besides, he was only 17 when he died, never reaching his full potential. One thing I should point out, however, is that Grievous had never fought the likes of Yoda or Battlemaster Cin Drallig. Grievous had the potential to be an excellent antagonist in the Prequels. Another example of character who doesn't need the Force to have influence and poses a threat to the Jedi. IMO, he had more going for him than Dooku, and certainly Maul. Maul was raised to be a Sith since his childhood, but didn't have any interesting characteristics. Sort of a mix between Sidious and Vader, especially Pre Suit Vader. Palpatine is a sadist with no redeeming qualities, and just enjoys being evil, which is fun to watch, though you can't do this for every character, since that would be boring (basically Grievous in Canon). Vader during ROTS didn't crack jokes and cackled, he was cold and silent. His character is also more fleshed out than Maul, and he fulfill this "Silent Hitman" character when he massacres the Jedi and the Separatists. Dooku has more going for him than Maul, though he's just another ex-Jedi. And he smiles like a typical bad guy too. He got something in Attack of The Clones, but pretty much nothing in Revenge of the Sith. AOTC should have been Episode 1, while Episode 2 should have been the late Clone Wars, and then ROTS with Episode 3. However, tweaks should be made, and instead of Dooku being Palpatine's apprentice, he would be an independent Sith, a rival. Dooku didn't have entirely selfish motives, and it makes no sense for him to join someone like Palpatine. Plagueis having two apprentices simultaneously would have been interesting, especially since he choose to ignore the Rule of Two. Dooku would be this second apprentice.

This match-up would be far more fair if it was Grievous vs. Galen... with the stipulation of no active force powers (but even then, it's still a mismatch in Marek's favor). Galen Marek uses the Force very liberally, and is without a doubt comparable to Mace in the Force... and Mace EASILY force crushed Grievous, wounding his lungs. In a realistic fight between these two characters, Grievous would only have a chance if he got in close, and STAYED in close. If Marek has any decent amount of distance between himself and Grievous, or simply MAKES enough room, he wins rather easily. 13:34, Galen's Soresu defense is not even remotely comparable to Kenobi's? Lol. What? XD An actually fair and accurate statement would instead be that Marek's Soresu defense likely doesn't quite measure up to Kenobi's (yet his overall skill and especially his force aug. has him surpassing Kenobi). What you said however is just pure exaggeration. Keep in mind, Kenobi lost to Vader in ANH (yes, he technically LET himself lose, but numerous sources substantiate Vader was notably his better, and Kenobi would have likely lost had the fight continued), yet Marek won against Vader at the end of TFU, and via the novelization, he was "blocking [Vader] blow for blow." And for the record, yes, ANH Kenobi should be better than, or at least comparable to his ROTS self.... and yes I can substantiate that. 14:00, hold up... you don't think Marek has the skill to contend with a "high performance juggernaut like Grievous..." yet Marek not only contended with, but bested a "high performance juggernaut" like VADER. Dude, Vader>Dooku>Grievous. XD 21:12 & 21:17, actually, considering Sidious blasted Vader with lightning in the opening issue of the newest Vader comic series, and it clearly wasn't Sidious going super easy with his force lightning either, I'd say Vader brushing off Galen's force lightning attacks says more for Vader's durability than it does Galen Marek being "weak" in force lightning. 22:27, sorry, Mace Windu is not a duelist "well above Marek's level." Yoda would count as a duelist well above Marek's level, but not Mace. Mace only matched Sidious via Vaapad amping him to obscene levels. Normally, base-level Windu is Dooku-level, who is significantly beneath both Yoda and Sidious. Wow. You actually think Grievous would most likely win... that's amazing, and not in a good way. Tell me, what's stopping Marek from sensing Grievous as a non-force-sensitive, and then merely ragdolling him? Upon sensing Grievous doesn't wield the Force, I see no reason why Marek wouldn't then use variations of force grip against Grievous. Again, as I said above, the only way Grievous has a chance is if he gets up close, and while you make a good argument for Grievous being able to make it difficult for anyone to escape him once he's up close, he's never shown to close the distance or keep the distance close against anyone on Marek's level. And regarding Obi-Wan, as a Guardian and as just his M.O. in general, like Anakin, Obi-Wan very primarily just engaged with his lightsaber, which is why Grievous did as well as he did against him. Marek however, unlike Obi-Wan and Anakin, uses the Force vastly more freely. You're really underplaying just how much of an advantage an extremely strong force-user has against Grievous. He's definitely good enough to mitigate and make irrelevant the advantage of most force-users' powers, but Grievous is, for the most part, doomed against more powerful force-users who use the Force quite liberally.

6:57 - Based on what? Galen has shown himself to be more powerful then "top tier Council masters" in his fight against Vader. 13:41 - I have to disagree with this assessment. While I agree that Galen is not as technically skilled as Kenobi, he possesses parity with Vader as of TFU, Vader being stated to be faster the Obi Wan only a year after RotS over a decade before the events of TFU. Whatever disparity in skill exists between them is more then made up for via their comparative level of augmentation. 21:15 - Considering Galen powered the engines of a downed Correlian freighter in his first mission to Raxus Prime and then goes on to destroy the supports of an orbital superstructure with Force lightning, I dont think you can use the effect it had on the suit of a Force user with powerful passive Force defenses as a way to ascertain how badly it would damage the armor of a non Force user like Grievous. 22:29 - Again, I don't see Windu as "well above" Marek as a duelist and I don't know how you can claim his victories against the opponents he faced were circumstantial in his favor when in nearly every fight the circumstances were AGAINST him.

This would be one hell of a fight to see. It would be very very aggressive. Galen would win with his very proficient application and chaining use of the force however in the end. Galen would probably end up deep frying him somehow just like how his clone version did to vader. Galen is not getting out of this fight without a scratch though, Grievous is a vicious and an effective combatant in his legends depiction.

I refuse on your opinion jensaarai; yes, I agree with Greavius(I can't spell) pushing Starkiller into fighting like Kenobi. However, as you said yourself, Starkiller probes his opponents and spams on their weaknesses; so, in the midst of battle, Starkiller would realize that the way to win is to crush the General; therefore, he would use force repulse to break the General's assault, then immediately force crush the General; giving Starkiller the win.

1) the breakdown of all the tiers 2) assessment of Obi-Wan Kenobi (does he break into Tier 1 lightsaber skills or is he "merely" a Tier 2?) 3) assessment of Darth Vader (one of only three Tier One physical specimens?) 4) some sort of classification and categorization of lightsaber forms (to know which is best for what type of fighter and situation) My list of things I would love to see from you. You are so knowledgeable and your essays are so insightful and well regulated and logical, your conclusions feels entirely reasonable and natural even when I find myself not in complete agreement. ^_^ 2 and 3 are almost purely because (as far as I can tell) Obi-Wan is the fighter you most respect and Vader is the tank you most fear (and rightly so in both cases, might I add). I guess I could even add one more... 5) Yoda ... for obvious reasons to anyone who has followed your channel for a while.

Honestly, considering how Grievous is purely offensive-oriented with any defenses he makes just precursors to more attacks, someone like Galen who is also offense-oriented is going to get his shit pushed in because he's not the superior duelist in this contest. Like stated in the video, if Galen uses any form of Force Crush, Grievous is done. For all his massive, massive strengths, Grievous has one glaring, all-encompassing weakness that, if exploited, is an instant OHK: his organ sac. If it gets hit, even a stormtrooper would be able to kill him, because it has every single vital organ he has left (save his brain) in one convenient place. So if Galen just crushes his chest, the duel is over before it even begins. Otherwise, Grievous pretty much has it in the bag. Odds are in his favor roughly 3 out of 4 times.
@Shadowrulzalways
@Shadowrulzalways 6 жыл бұрын
So you basically stated either one could win based on the circumstances. Galen could just spam the force on Grevous until Grevous is dead. No questions asked. In a lightsaber duel yeah Grevous wins but in a real fight to the death, Galen would just spam the force and Grevous would out right be dead. No way Grevocpuld adapt and win from there. Good vid.

Enjoyed the video as usual, although I am more doubtful of the overall verdict. While I agree with you that Grievous would steam roll Galen in pure lightsabre combat, I do think his force powers would leverage him more of an advantage. Setting aside the instant kill of crush, if Galen can toss out some of his lesser force powers in defence against Palpatine and his own onslaught I think he would be able to muster some force based defence and counters against Grievous. While I don't think this would completely tip the scales unless he goes for a crush out of desperation, I do think it makes that match a bit more even.

Grievous moves into an overwhelming offensive style. Galen uses form 3 to some effect but begins to feel himself being overcome, not being able to outmatch Grievous in any physical capacity. Seeing the mechanical systems, Galen fires a quick blast of force lightning which, while not overwhelming Grievous, causes him to stagger long enough for Galen to retreat away from the assault (possibly also slipping in a quick counter strike as he retreats). Galen uses the force to levitate and dash around the battlefield, navigating the terrain in ways Grievous can't keep up with due to his inability to shift direction in mid-air. Galen uses lightning and/or telekinesis as a frustrated and ungrounded Grievous attempts to pursue him. Recovering from being struck by Galen's force abilities, Grievous shifts back to a more defensive posture and plants himself to the ground. He them attempts to intimidate and/or goad Galen so that they can resume lightsaber combat. Unphased, Galen reaches out with the force to crush the chest of Grievous in a surge of savage anger. Grievous deactivates his lightsabers and falls to his knees, clutching his chest. Galen unleashes a full barrage of all the force lightning he can produce with the full power of his rage against his crippled opponent. Heart spasms. Eyes melt. Brain fries. In the silence that follows a mechanical scream, Grievous falls dead. In other words, I think you underestimated Galen's ability to incorporate the force seamlessly into his lightsaber combat, which would give him the time, space, and opportunity to use his force powers (which he implements much more aggressively than the jedi of the era against whom Grievous had so much success). Put Grievous against an opponent who has training in and is willing to use the force more viciously as a weapon (like Windu or many dark side users) and he becomes a much less dangerous opponent.

Honestly, I don't really think it matters that Grievous can tank most of the hits because Galen can just use Force Grip to hold him still and spam the shit out of him with lightning. Also, don't give me that crap that his lightning isn't effective. That was the Starkiller clone which you clearly said is a different person. There is no basis in the game/books that Galen's lightning doesn't effect Vader. Also, you said that Grievous mostly starts fights with his duel sabers NOT all four. You also said that Galen would more than likely be able to deal with this, at least for a time, so I do not agree that he would be defeated immediately and all Galen would have to do is retaliate in the manner I stated above. I still think that Grievous would be a very big threat and could very likely still win but I don't think you give Galen enough props.

Ngl you undermined the hell out of how much Galeen uses the force. If Grevious did get close to Galeen, he would mostly likely spam force push/force repulse. Galeens smart enough to know that 4 lightsabers being effectively used at once equals big trouble at close quarters. tl;dr Galeen gets hit by Grevious, probably wouldn't come out unscathed. But overall Galeen would harness either the light to push Grevious into something hazardous in the environment,or harness the dark side to crush Grevious into a cube.

Just finished and this was really intriguing. Horary for tier breakdown at the end btw! Anyway, I still think Marek who see Greivous is non-force sensitive and crush him with force crush. But the minute Grevious begins to hammer the shit out of Marek...gg. I need some time to think over this one. I strongly disagree that Dooku provided "basic" training to Greivous in all 7 forms. Basic training wouldn't have caused Greivous to be an (overall) equal to Mace Windu. As for your tier breakdown, I believe that Greivous as a duelist is more tier 2+ - 1.5 due to his high degree of development in all lightsaber combat forms and skill with mult other weapons and unarmed combat skills. His developed skill is more tier 2+, but his overall lightsaber abilities is tier 1.5. As for Marek, interesting in that you call him a "tier 2 in the works." I overall see Marek has a tier 2.5 force wielder and duelist. He is mainly held back my lack of development in force abilities+dueling skill.

You are assuming Starkiller (Galen) will get wrecked so fast in the fight that he won’t even be able to use any force powers? Giving the fight to Grievous also assumes that Galen is weaker than basic Jedi characters like Ki-Adi-Mundi who stood against the OP legends grievous for a LONG time. I ran a quick simulation in a game and Galen literally force-stuns grievous with an oppressive amount of force lightning and cuts his head off with a saber throw. I think that would be a more accurate expectation for how this fight would play out. The simulation fight was about a few minutes. This was also a nerfed Galen with less health than the Grievous. Turns out that a cyborg non-force wielding Grievous can’t stand up very well against dark side force abilities. This doesn’t mean he’s helpless, however. Like you say, in the simulation he WAS overwhelming Galen with light saber strikes at first but once Galen used one force push (like obi wan did against him in ROTS.) Grievous was put on the back foot and Galen was able to strategically regain advantage. Even Grievous’ Magnaguards had to intervene in his fight with Eeth Koth once the Jedi started using force abilities because he was owning Grievous and the droids knew he could lose.

Something that I recently noticed is that on the Xbox 360 version of the game is that if you just stand around and don’t block, Galen occasionally uses tutaminus like Vader and obsorbs it or sends it back. i went back through the novel and found instances that could be read as him doing the same .( though in this case I fully admit I may have misunderstood what I read. For your own research I found these on p32, 61,141, and 268.) I don’t have a ps2/psp/ wii version to see if that is included there, but I thought I’d point it out if the fanalysis council uses him in a future video and wanted to look further in to it. I understand if you don’t but Galen Marek is my all time favorite Star Wars character and the idea that his abilities in defense are stronger than I though makes future vs matches intriguing.

Finally sitting down to watch this, I've been waiting all day to watch it :-) On a side note, as we know in Disney Canon Tholme has a brief mention and killed off too easily (in my opinion) in Dark Disciple. My first question to you Jensaarai1 is this: using only Legends material, who would actually win between Tholme and Asajj Ventress. Tholme will be as he is during the Siege of Saleucami and Ventress as she was prior to and during the events of the Battle of Rendili, the fight taking place on Saleucami or Queyta. My second question is this, which would be a fairer fight: Tholme vs Obi-Wan Kenobi (ROTS), or Tholme vs Ben Kenobi? Looking forward to see who wins this match.

I for one think Lightning is overrated and am skeptical of its tactical viability, seeing it more as a submission and intimidation move. Like all force powers, it requires energy to use and can by observation can be defeated with a simple light saber block, which takes far less energy. If Grievous has four sabers out, he's certainly on his guard and a lightning release would likely just sap Starkiller's energy. Also, lightning does not appear to be the quickest power to use, and in close quarters Grievous would probably strike him down before he could call it forth.

He didn’t declare Grevous the Definitive winner. He jsutstated it depends on the circumstances. Either one would win depending on the situation. While I agree Galen would probably win had he used the force more, force lightning would not have been the thing to put Grievous down. Grievous has actually been shown to be quite resilient against electrical attacks. We've seen him no-sell a couple of jolts from an electro staff, which is enough to kill a normal human and badly injure a jedi. Force Lighting is about as effective, if not less. Grievous would be able to handle force lighting just fine, even ignoring the fact that he can simply absorb it with his lightsaber like pretty much everyone else who has had to deal with it has done.

Personally this would make sense...if Grievous was force sensitive. However he's not, and Galen would probably pick up on that. Galen was a practical man who used the best method to strike at his enemies, and since he knows Grievous can't block the force, he's just going to crush him with it. Galen wouldn't waste time with the blade when he sees 4 blades, he'll know he needs to end this now. Unlike Anakin who let's his rage get the better of him, Galen is no nonsense and is always trying to end fights as best as he can, and I think that he would realize that

I suspect one of Grievous' flaws was that despite his extensive analytical ability, his form was far from perfect. Kenobi disarmed him by slipping his lightsaber down Grievous's own blade, a move that as obvious as it seems does not regularly happen in canon. I also wonder about any relationship between a force user and the saber itself that might allow control of how one blade might bind another through the Force. If such a relationship can exist, it certainly could not be duplicated by any non force sensitive cyborg. just spitballin'
