In this Slay the Spire gameplay, Baalorlord does an Ascension 20 run with Ironclad. First, he gives tips on choosing a path and a starting bonus. Later on, he explains his decision for each card he chooses and why it's important to the build. Towards the end, he gears up for an epic Heart fight you don't want to miss. In regard to 36:40 I've done some testing and found out that with calipers, any block accumulated above 999 (mimimun of 508) with entrench will result in a block >999. This can only be achieved on a turn the enemy is not attacking you, either by applying a debuff, self-buff or just the sleep turn of lagavullin. However, this does not work while barricade is active, so I speculate that this has something to do with the interaction of calipers. Did not test how it works with body slam, but usually a block of 999 OHKOs anything anyways.

Calipers is my favorite relic. Once you get some good block cards and an Entrench it's almost like having a Barricade that you don't have to draw or pay for.

Calipers is a great time, every character has some way to make good use of it, one of those few relics that when properly built around can be an insane late game win condition

It seems the glitch occurred as a result of using entrench at 945, with calipers and immediately ending your turn. That’s the baseline. 945 times two is 1890. 1890-15 is 1875, the block amount you had. The only other variable that popped out, other than the timing of the “next turn” was that the boss buffed himself immediately as well- not to mention your runic dome being on may have effected things? I’d try testing out the calipers and entrench at 945 block with an immediate end turn press right as the entrench is played first tho.

I've tested around and found out that when the use of entrench result in block >999 on a non-attacking turn of an enemy, the block surpasses the 999 threshold with the calipers and will be kept. So if you have a minimum of 508 block, use entrench and end turn, you will have 1001 block. This works on any turn the enemy is not attacking you, either by debuffing, self-buffing or just the sleep turn of lagavullin, will result in keeping the excess block. However, this does not work if you use barricade, so I speculate that this has something to do with the interaction with calipers.

If you think the HDs are comfortable, try some meze headphones, the sound signature isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but they are supremely comfortable (and very stylish if you care about that)

So with the glitch at 36:35, Baalorlord doubles his block at 945 block, going to 999, which should be the cap. After calipers procs, it should drop to 984, but instead jumps up to 1875, which is coincidentally equal to 945 * 2 - 15, or the expected block calculation if there was no upper cap on block. This makes me think the bug is because of calipers being weird and not getting the memo that there's a block cap. I think the process to replicate this bug would be to try and double your block past 999 and end your turn without taking any damage after. If you take damage after doubling, the displayed block drops below 999 and calipers behave as expected. I'd love to see if this bug is replicable.

Quite notably if I'm right about taking damage after doubling block preventing the bug, then it means that this method can't work in the heart fight. I guess nightmare + wraith form/apparitions + tungsten rod is still the only way to stall out the heart indefinitely.

Theoretically forever if you have Apparition to reduce all incoming hits to 1, Tungsten Rod to reduce 1 damage to 0 damage and two copies of Nightmare+ so that you can create more Nightmares that create more Apparitions

if u dont have a way to stack intangible over and over then eventually it does do over 999 damage with the multihit, and it doesnt take THAT long, but it is quite a while before it gets there.

Okay I have a stats question for those of you who are more well equipped to answer. I've noticed a trend in my run history where my runs with a deck size

In general, smaller decks are better. I think Baalor once said you want to be able to cycle through your deck once every 3 turns or so. Lots of draw lets you have more cards, and powers/cards that exhaust can affect the amount too. Unfortunately since every run is different, it's hard to give an exact answer

As others have mentioned, ideally you want to be able to cycle through your deck quickly. This usually means a small deck is better, although large decks can cycle quickly with lots of card draw. So sometimes taking a card can effectively reduce the size of your deck by helping you cycle faster. Why are your bigger decks better? I'm not entirely sure. Longer run = more cards and a bigger deck, so if you're looking at failed runs this explains it. It's possible you're skipping less on winning runs than losing runs, for some reason. (This is a case of correlation vs causation) It's possible you're taking a ton of crappy cards in Act I and early Act II, and so you need to take lots of upgraded cards later to compensate. (Or you aren't removing enough.) A more focused strategy around abusing certain cards benefits more from a small deck. If your strategy is less finessed, this partially explains why you aren't benefiting from small decks. (Although it doesn't entirely explain the favor towards big decks.) Alternatively, maybe Baalor is actually crap at this game, and hm bigger decks are actually always better. But I might not put money on that one.

I'm normally not crazy about them, but it was really cool this hearing Baalor explain how he was countering the most likely moves his enemies were making using cards like Dark Shackles and whatnot.
