The 2019 FIDE World Cup is taking place in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia from 10 September to 4 October. The 128-player knockout tournament features most of the world's best players. The total prize fund is $1.6 million, with $110,000 for the winner and $6,000 for first round losers. The finalists will qualify for the 2020 Candidates Tournament that determines Magnus Carlsen's next World Championship challenger.
The format is six knockout rounds of 2-game classical matches before a 4-game final. The time control is 90 minutes for 40 moves, then 30 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment from move 1. If the score is tied the players then play two 25-minute + 10-second increment rapid games, then two 10+10 games, then two 5+3 and, finally, Armageddon, where White has 5 minutes to Black's 4 but a draw qualifies Black for the next round. Me too, and after 1 minute of analysis I was convinced it was the best move, certainly much better than Ding's Rb6. I am not quite 1700 in online rapid chess, and occasionally I make terrible blunders. But I am shocked that Ding made an inferior move at a slower time control. However, for the rest of the game he played pretty well, worthy of his rating.

I agree, especially at the top level of chess; however, it would be foolish to assume good memorization is the only reason players are at the top level of chess. Most people can't get to the 2000's, let alone a title. All of the top chess players are prodigies although most use engines to maintain a high ranking(see Anish Giri)

Qf3 doesn't completely lose the game.. engine gives Bd5 some -2 advantage .. but for practical game you don't wanna allow rook takes d5 and attacking chances while your king is stil in e8 ... Bd5 is the first move you see in that position.. obviously Ding had his reasons

What would have happened if you moved Rook to E3 instead of D2 in the end - resulting in capturing the white square bishop. Would the game have ended in Grischuk's favour due to the fact the bishop wouldn't be able to capture the rook, as the pawn once it finished its run to F1 would be on the wrong coloured square?

I'd have to agree with the great Ben Finegold that this might indeed be the weakest era for chess. Grandmasters today play thirty moves of theory then blunder the next move out of it. They spend so much time memorizing computer lines and theory that they've forgotten how to actually play chess. I can't imagine guys like Capablanca or Fischer not spotting these kinds of missed wins or avoiding these losing moves.
