I've known my husband since we were 14, we have been together 22 years. The man i watched get on that bus is not the same man who came home. He was in during the time of you didn't talk about it. He down played what was going on because he was trying to protect me. He was drowning though, it got worse after the 2nd time. Our family was destroyed and he lost all of his family. It took 6 years for me to be told about PTSD and TBI and we are barely starting to piece things together. I had to go to the va and fight for him. I wish I should of had more education so that I could have been a better support... my dad was Vietnam veteran, he walked out when I was six. My whole life everybody just portrayed him as a pos, I now realize he also had PTSD. Thank you for your service

I was fortunate to serve between wars, USAF 1995-1999. I had the time of my life while I was in. I went places I never would have, had experiences civilians wouldn’t understand, shot the coolest guns, met the best, lifelong friends while I was in. It wasn’t always great, but when looking back, I remember the wonderful times. I really enjoyed it. I hate that everyone don’t get the same good experience as I was fortunate to get. God Bless all of our wonderful men and women who volunteered to protect our great nation.

As someone with PTSD from my exceedingly Fucked up childhood, I cannot even begin to imagine what our veterans deal with. My partner and love of my life still dissociates from the world to deal, I struggle at times with my patience, but songs like this remind me that what he went through just cannot be described. Thanks for your service Billy, and your compassion, even if I am late to the channel.

I didn't understand as a child why my uncle never went to fireworks with us - he served in Vietnam, and he couldn't take the sound. Still can't - but the movie theater near his home lets veterans in for free on "fireworks holidays." With their kids.

My uncle was a POW in Vietnam for just over 18 months. He passed away just a few years ago and still struggled to deal with his PTSD all those years later. He usually hid it behind a smile and laughter but occasionally he couldn’t fight off the flashbacks. It was heartbreaking but he was also tremendously strong and one of my greatest heroes! I am sooo proud of him for his service and the strength he displayed throughout his life! Edited to add: My nephew dreamed of having a military career. Unfortunately that was cut short after multiple injuries during his 3 tours in Iraq and he was in the early days of his tour in Afghanistan when he suffered his most severe injury. He has really struggled to deal with his PTSD and has suffered from extreme anxiety frequently. 😭

Billy; my Dad was a WWII VETERAN POW/MIA. My grandmother got a telegraph that my Dad was KIA. Then received another telegraph that he was POW/MIA. He was also WIA. He received 16 gunshots up and down the left side. Steel plate in his head and facial reconstruction. He was 81 years old and still suffered from PTSD. Thank you for your service and signing that contract. My Dad was ARMY as well.

I have nothing but respect for people who serve. My dad was in the military I know it helped him alot at a time in his life where he didnt know what to do with his life. I myself contemplated joining when I was in high school but I know I'm not a strong enough person for it. I definitely think we dont treat vets the way we should here. They deserve alot more respect then they get.

My mom worked for the US Consulate in Saudi Arabia and was considered essential personnel during the First Gulf War. She was unable to leave because she had to arrange the evacuation flights for the American and British citizens. She came home with a major case of PTSD but could not get any help from the military because she wasn’t a “soldier”! We, she and I worked together, I’m a nurse and got through it intact and trying our best to always see the bright side. We both know that there is glory waiting on the other side. Thank you for sharing and for recognizing our service personnel.

You know I shown this song to a friend of mine this song who is a Afghanistan vet. He said the song was a big influence to him getting the help he needed. One day he told me it applies to me to, I wasn’t in the military ever so I asked him what he meant. He told me first responders count in that to. I’m a firefighter/EMT, and he said that he believes that to be true with that lyric “they taught me how to put that uniform on, I just can’t get it off” I understand what he meant by that. My husband is serving overseas... he has been there over a year. Last time he was home he was different. PTSD is very real. There were times our daughter would try to get his attention and he would walk away. God bless our Military.

Thanks for doing this one. It always hits me hard. I was an active duty Army wife for close to 15 years. My husband is a disabled vet. We can see the pain. We had our own problems as the wife and kids. You pray that white van never pulls in to your driveway with the Chaplin and rear D telling you your soldier is coming back in a box. IAll of the warriors need to understand that when you go off to war you take our.hearts with you. We don't face death in the same way but we all pay a hard price to be a partkeephation safe and free. As a great granddaughter of a WWII Marine, I cannot imagine what my great grandfather went through during the war. He was stationed at Wake Island and was captured, but luckily he was able to come home. To all those who is in the service or is a veteran, I, humbly, thank you for your service.

I never served, but been around the Army for the past 35 years, faithful Army wife for 33 year, went through 8 deployments, plus i work as a Nurse here on base and i know just to well, about my husbands demons, the other soldiers demons, them self medicating with alcohol numming the pain, families falling apart, divorces due to ptsd and suicides, flashbacks, when we (hubby and I) first met, he had the brightest blue eyes, now they are just dead. Made dad use to work on the copier fora place called Patriot Paws. They are a PTSD service dog group that works to get trained dogs to veterans (and other people) with PTSD. One day while he was there working on the copier a gentleman called the company to tell them to give his dog to someone else because he was going to kill himself by driving his car into a wall (from what I remember that is). I don't know if the gal that talked to him ever was able to talk the guy out of it or not (I hope and pray she was able too), but I'm glad they tried. This was just one of many incidents they deal with all the time. They do their best to keep the PTSD victims from committing suicide and in getting the dogs to those with PTSD, but it takes almost 2 years to get the dog trained and make sure the dog is right for the person before the person gets the dog.

Army airborne infintry.. He Is My pride & Joy.. He will give his life.. I know. He has been almost lost life. But He won't give up servicing USA..

my brother served 3 terms in Vietnam, and so yes, I am EXTREMELY proud of him...God fest his soul. Just wanted you to know that all wars affect Mothers, Fathers, as well as siblings and of course spouses and children. Love you Billy, but please don"t forget the parents and siblings? My brother was only 18 and was drafted and left for California, only 3 months after graduating high school. My brother was in the Navy, We still love and miss him so much. And, Billy you rock !!! :)

Suicide is not a easy thing for anyone involved. Some people don't truly mean to die, they just have a rough patch. But if they truly need to leave and cannot live with whatever is wrong, I don't blame them & wish them luck on their journey. Terminal illness, severe mental illness, whatever it will be... sometimes you just can't go on anymore.

Oh God, my time was not easy for my wife and kids. But the time before her and my kids was hard because I was alone. So I knew it was painful for her and did the best I could. Yes I come from a Big family, but being married life is different and difficult. Bless you.

Billy, I understand, I really do. Memories of my childhood back during the Korean War hearing casualty reports (they were broadcast daily back then) reporting the numbers of those killed or injured, and hearing soldiers talking about "one-step charley" snakes in 'Nam, (when I was older), it does affect you -- it breaks my heart. I remember, too, more recently when large numbers of our soldiers were killed back in the '80's. It hurts my heart to see the pain of the soldiers and their families, so yes, I cry a lot! I'm not ashamed of that -- it's simple - it happens when you care!

I have major respect to all of those who have served and are serving I have many family members that served but the one who stands out is my uncle ( by marriage) ... he was paralyzed on the left side of his body he had countless tats he was this big burly strong man until he talked about his time in Vietnam , he was injured a couple times and would come home and heal then go back and on his last tour ....( it shook me to my core ) he had an identical twin brother who he lost in battle ( he stepped on a land mine ) and literally had to carry him off the field ( the details are gory) and put him on a evac helicopter and he stayed with his brother all the way home .. then his wife and 2 kids at the time where going to pick him up at the airport and in the rush to pick him up they got in an accident and sadly passed away he said after he buried them all he went back again but for revenge he said he had nothing more to loose and all he wanted at that point was revenge he said he didn’t care about anything even his own life and that’s when he was shot in the back and paralyzed .... he never told anyone up until a few days before he passed away I had found some photos and asked him about it ... but the pain our vets endure not only physically but emotionally is something I wish I could take away they deserve so much respect it saddens me deeply that we have veterans that are homeless and who have lost everything .... they choose to put there life on the line for us at least we can do is take care of them when they come home

This song hits me hard my brother was in the army and served in Iraq 3 tours his last on he became the 7% with tbi and PTSD unfortunately in 2013 he became on of the 22 veterans a day to commit suicide he couldn't win the battle in his head Thank you Billy for your service.

This song always makes me cry. Was in the 101st 3/187 Inf. Reg. Held my best friend while he bled out on March 13th, 2006. Still plays in my head most of the time. Still kills me that I made it home and he didn't. Was medically discharged in 2007 due to back problems sustained from my humvee being hit by an IED.

By far my favorite military related song. It cuts deep. I am a disabled veteran from combat, so this is a hard pill to swallow. I'm finally learning to live with the pain (both emotional and physical), but I cant figure out how to get my uniform off. I definitely relate. The worst part for me is that I cant remember most of the incident. PTSD with TBI is the worst. Its always the hardest time of the year, during the anniversary. If you have a former soldier who is always down a certain time of the year......chances are that's when their horrors occurred. Be helpful when they are down, I contemplate suicide every year around the same time.

My dad was a military veteran 15th sustainment brigade, he had PTSD and he committed suicide on January 3rd 2015 I miss him everyday he has missed a lot. He's missed my high school graduation....and I'll be getting married soon what makes me cry is that my father won't get to walk me down the isle.

My grandfather was a marine in Vietnam he never talked about it but all those empty beer cans told us he was hurting.

As a child I didn't understand why my father wouldn't talk about his time in Vietnam. I remember being very young, asking him about it, and he would just get silent. I idolized my dad. He was the strongest man in my world. When I decided to join the military I asked him what he thought. He told me every man has to make his own decision. Originally I thought this was a shitty answer to my question, but in reality he was teaching me a lesson. Our decisions to do things cannot be influenced by anyone other than ourselves. I did a tour of Kosovo and then in Iraq in '03. When I finally came home my father could tell I was different. He just looked at me and said, "Now you understand." I did. I understood why he couldn't talk about it. I understood why I couldn't talk about. It was for us, and anyone that hadn't ever been through it could NEVER understand. There are no words to explain it.

I’ve said this before, I am disgusted with the way our government treats our veterans, What I should say is how they aren’t treated. I have many reasons for feeling disgusted. The biggest reason which makes me angry and makes me cry. There are 2 words that should NEVER EVER be in the same sentence • HOMELESS & VETERAN‼️

As a combat marine this song really hit home and deep.

I am a female US Army veteran who served in '94-'00. During my time in I was deployed to Bosnia twice, once during IFOR (Implantation Force) and SFOR (Stabilization Force) and even though I wasn't there while shots were fired I still have nightmares from being there due to an attempted sexual assault and from the devastation I had seen. I still try my hardest not to hit the ground during firework holidays because I think that it is a land mine that went off beside me while on a mission to deliver fuel to a neighboring camp. My family always has been here for me, but even with my husband being a veteran as well he doesn't fully understand because he didn't see the stuff I saw. This this song shows and like you know Billy, not all wounds can be seen. It is a constant struggle to keep my mind from "going there. I want to thank all soldiers current and past, but I have to send a big shout out to my fellow female soldiers who had to fight the war we had to deal with just because we were female.

I “live” constantly with PTSD. Some days, it is paralyzing. I work daily to take captive thoughts about ending it all. I got mine from decades of severe and constant abuse at the hands of my family instead of from military service, so I sometimes feel like a pansy regarding it.
