This song gets me too. As a Marine, while overseas I wrote an "in the event of my death" letter. I burned it when I got home but it was a real sobering letter to write.

i had the HONOR of being on The Detail, at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery in El Paso Tx. while a member of the 3rd-ACR as Cadre to Military Funerals. It's hard, it was not during a time of conflict, and we buried mostly Veterans that passed away of "natural causes", but the crack of the rifle is still just as sharp, the sound of SPC Padilla ( an Armament Dawg from my shop and a trumpet player in high school) playing TAPS on an actual bugle that had been in the Regiment for well over 100 years (he practiced it til he had it down), The Flag, warmed by the Texas sun, folded perfectly and handed to the OIC, who had the toughest job in the entire world, to hand the "essence" of a Soldier to his widow (each time in our case) while we were relying on our own personal discipline to prevent us from just losing it) Missy (my sisters name is Missy BTW) while i have not felt the pain you have, i understand what it looks like having witnessed it. First, allow me to thank you and your family for the sacrifice you and they have made to our Nation, and to state that im Proud to have served under the same flag as they did. Secondly, to challenge you to remain as Proud of them as you were the day you wrote the post im responding to, i know you will, because thats what family does. and lastly, when you see a Veteran in a store or on the street, and make that eye contact and in some cases give that little nod, know that they know, Because We Know, just Smile back and keep rolling on. God Bless You and Your Family. Brave Rifles!

God BLESS and thank you too!!❤️🙏🏻

Every time I hear this song I think of my grandpa who was a veteran of the army and died in his early to mid eighties. He received military honors at his funeral. He was once a soldier in the Army and he always will be a soldier in the army, though retired. I have no doubt that he is where soldiers should go when they pass away. As well as veterans like him.

Army vet here. I wrote milestone letters for each of my kids, each of my deployments. For every milestone I could have potentially missed. First days at new schools, first crush, sweet sixteen, first love, graduation, the day they got married, first child...etc. I wrote a letter for every moment I thought my children should have their mother there. Even that small piece of me.....just in case. God bless those still writing these letters and keep those who's letters were delivered. Amen

I just can't stand Alan jackson! I don't get it? Where were you is a terrible elementary like song. He even says he doesn't pay attention to politics and just watched CNN. Never thought that song did the world trade center tragedy any justice, its like he just wanted to make money off of it. just like he does with gospel music now. He's such a jerk in real life.

Billy, I'm the mother of Army Infantry Veteran. Some don't know this but I do all too well, death is not the only sacrifice that you young men and women make. Sometimes it is even worse to come home with those scars, scars that will last a lifetime. I carry the scars and I was just here waiting for my son to come home, praying it would not be in a box. The nightmares that haunted me every single day still creep into my sleep occasionally 9 years later. Thank you and your family for their sacrifice, you are in my thoughts and prayers forever!

Okay, let's start from the top. Thank you for your service. I'm quite proud to say that I'm an army wife, daughter of a retired army MP, and niece of a former Marine. I love your 'Veteran reactions' and I actually have two songs that I'd like to request: "Some gave all" and "If I don't make it back" I know for sure that "Some gave all" has a video, but I think "If I don't make it back" is just the lyrics. Just a fair warning: "If I don't make it back" doesn't kick you in the feels until the last verse, and when it does, it will hurt.

I sang this for my coworkers at our corporation’s Veterans Day celebration and there was not a dry eye after the song, including my own because i always think of my kids and how precious life is and how much me owe to those who protect our country and our way of life.

Billy I just want to say thank you. Not only for your service but also for this channel. I know that you're a family man, and it takes a good while to film and edit these videos. They mean a lot to me and your other subscribers. Your reactions are beautiful because you relate to these songs on a level that civilians never will. Thank you.

We do not know each other but I claim all who have served as my Brothers and Sisters in arms and uniform. This song had me almost incapacitated to the point of whether or not I could finish this message. I struggle everyday with the reality of being one who came home and is grateful but regrets it at the same time. Thank you for being a voice, Never think that you are alone.

Billy, thank you for your service. I never wore the uniform of our country, but I did wear the uniforms of a Firefighter, EMT, Police Officer, and Deputy Sheriff for over 30 years combined. Don't ever apologize for getting emotional over a touching song, especially when it hits close to home.

When this song came out, both of my brothers were deployed over seas, by the grace of God, they both made it home safely!! It still makes me ugly cry Everytime I hear it. Love, and respect towards any and all veterans, another great reaction ❤️

Odd, did this video like read my mind!? I was just wondering how well or bad I did on Saturday. I hadn't tried singing this for others since I posted a video on my old acct... Over 10 yrs ago. I'm not a vet whatsoever but this song always moves me. I was trying to not choke up at the end when singing it Sat. This song and your reaction, ❤ made me cry. It brought back feelings if fear that I'd loose my uncle. Made me think of my late classmate, a Marine. 22untilnone

I want to sincerely with all my heart thank our veterans. Thank you for doing what I don’t have the courage to do! Thank you for your selflessness and honor and duty. Me and my mom have helped homeless vets whenever we’ve come across them. We need to take our focus off the superficial and other countries and focus on healing our men and women that have come back to us. I want a president in office who is going to do right by our men and women in service. Just know I thank you all who have served, who are serving and who are going to serve. Thank you from someone who doesn’t have the courage to go in to someone who does. In the meantime I’m going to keep buying meals and clothes for the homeless vets in my area. Than you all!

You have to check out Tim McGraw’s live ACM performance of this song. He honors families of fallen soldiers at the end of the song. The song itself is hard enough to get through without getting emotional, but to see those families and kids sitting up there will destroy you! Props to Tim for honoring those families! And love and prayers to those families that have endured loss.

Was in the Navy during Desert Storm and my husband was in the Air Force and our oldest grandchild wants to join the military when he is old enough, right now he is 8, so 10 more years. From one vet to another, Thank You for your service and for acknowledging the families that also serve.

I’m just getting into seeing reactions and I’m a spouse of a retired soldier and daughter of a retired soldier. My husband has 2 Purple Hearts a bronze star and silver star. He had 7 soldiers die from his company and he was with each one when they died. That’s how he got those medals. So this song really gets me.

Thank you for your service. My dad followed in his fathers shoes and my sister and I were going to follow his until they rejected the both of us for medical stuff. I hate it too. Hopefully my sisters' children will be able to. They've been in love with his stories since they were young and it's all they've ever wanted to do. There hasn't been a single break in generation of military service in my fathers' family since the Revolutionary War and even before. War is in our blood and the military is all my family knows. We're proud to be military and couldn't ever imagine a living as full civilians like my cousin. Tried it and it just didn't work. Somehow, one way or another, my immediate family is dragged into the military life. Wouldn't trade it for any other life. Ever.

I'm so sorry for your loss. It's easy to see how much you cared for your friend. And thank you for your service. My son spent three years in Korea in the army. He said once that he didn't feel worthy of being called a veteran. I reminded him that every time he put on his uniform, he became a target to anyone who hated this country. Thankfully, he's home and his service was almost a decade ago. Again, thank you for your honest reactions.
