OK I'm genuinely curious, can someone please explain to me why this song is soo massively popular in Britain? I'm American and this song along with the rest of Hot Fuss was absolutely huge here when it came out, and it's still a beloved classic to this day. But I'm just curious why THIS particular band and THIS particular song seems to speak to you Britons the most and elevate it above any other American (or indeed English) alternative rock/pop song? What separates it from all the others? Is it the lyrics? The melody/ instrumentation? What is it about the song that makes it quintessentially British? I really would like to hear an English perspective on this as it's just rather fascinating to me

Their debut album, Hot Fuss, was so Brit coded though! I can see why the Brits embraced them fully first. However, as an American, I'm proud to call them the best American rock band of the past 20 years. Most of my favorite bands over the years have all been British, but I'm glad to say the Killers are my favorite modern rock band. It also helps that Brandon Flowers is such a great front man that is very easy on the eyes, hahaha.

@@Shadow-In-The-East I'm not really sure? I feel like it's most likely the music, it's a catchy rhythm that quickly and easily draws you in. But the lyrics are also a part of why we love it so much: the heartache of missing out on love, and the jealousy of losing that love to someone else, is a feeling that a lot of people are likely able to relate to, and the fact that both verses are the same lyrics means it easy to remember if you feel like singing along. However, a lot of people nowadays, especially my age, have a sort of nostalgia when listening to this song also: when it first released, Mr Brightside was a massive hit in the UK, and so it was played often at parties, weddings, celebrations etc. Anyone my age listening to it is immediately brought back to that era of their life, when times were easy. And I think that's essentially what makes it such the cultural hit that it is in the UK: not only is it a catchy alt rock song with lyrics that people can relate to, but it's also got a sense of nostalgia for the good days, when things weren't so difficult in life and you could just have fun.

He touched the surface with why Mr Brightside is magnificent anthem loved by all in Ireland and the UK by saying it has a "sing along" feel. But the guitar riff is recognisable, the beat is fast and excitable and the lyrics are eccentric and poetic. It has a theme that is unique yet so many people relate : imagining the person you lust after being loved by someone else.

Until recently I thought the Killers were British. Mr Brightside is as much a staple UK nightclub song as Wonderwall or Don't look back in Anger, maybe that's why 😂
@Markolious

As an American, I also assumed they were from over there. It's a pretty huge song here too that everyone knows, but I feel like the British might like it slightly more? But I think it's their style and his vocals that make us really assume they are from the UK.

Mr. Brightside is my favorite Killers song. I never want them to touch it, by changing it or something. I don't want them to add to it ever again. It's great how it is alone, and I can't explain why it has it's effect either, but that beginning, everything about it... gives life.

I was bopping to this when 29 and just turned 50 and rock out still so it’s a song that’s v much stood test of time. A lot of us Gen Xers were the first to rock out to this back in the day and we love it because it just reminds you of those great times and it’s amazing how it still brings all the ages and teenagers onto the dance floor at the end of any good night out!

Actually the memory of him hearing Dont Look Back in Anger makes a lot of sense. That anthemic character of so much of what we went on to write. That's a cool story, and I can totally see how Mr Brightside was conceived as an 'answer' to that song.

I'm an American that has lived in Britain for the last 20 years... I honestly thought The Killers were British. I am somehow a little tiny bit happier knowing they are fellow Yanks that are just as home in Britain as they are in the USA... perhaps a bit more so actually!

I went thru a rather similar experience only just a couple of years ago in regards to Stanley Kubrick. I'd apparently all these years never managed to hear him ever actually speak (or it was so little so long ago I just forgot), one day I found some documentary footage on here from The Shining's shoot and my jaw just hit the floor when he spoke with a general American accent. There was just something about him that always just sent me a message that he was British.

This song is just an epic symbol of various factors of the generation who were lucky enough to grab it 1st time round. It was a student's night out floor basher, it was a festival goers chant, it was the high energy song that made the dance floor jump, it was everywhere, because it was fucking brilliant!!! It is anthemic ❤

The Killers definitely filled the gap for me when I was in high school and didn’t want to listen to pop anymore or the shitty rock music that was coming out of America in the early 2000s. The Killers were my guide to Alternative Rock music, which led me to the exact bands they mentioned. Their first album will always be in my top favorite albums for that reason, and I will always have a soft spot for this amazing band.
