Gareth Edwards is a VFX maverick who has harnessed the potential of visual effects to bring his visionary stories to life. He started with his first film, 'Monsters,' and continues to demonstrate the power of VFX in his latest work, 'The Creator.' One distinguishing feature of Gareth's approach is his preference for using real locations as the foundation for his scenes, later enhancing them with CGI. This approach gives his films a distinct, organic feel, setting them apart from the big studios' typical green screen-dominated productions.

Visual Effects, or VFX, have revolutionized the world of filmmaking, democratizing it and making it accessible to creators of all backgrounds and budgets. A filmmaker who exemplifies the power of VFX is Gareth Edwards, whose background in this field has significantly impacted his unique shooting style.
In 'Monsters,' Gareth Edwards showcased that a compelling story combined with budget-savvy VFX could create stunning visuals. His seamless integration of CGI elements into real locations demonstrates his ability to make informed decisions about what's achievable on screen. His VFX knowledge equips him to blend the real world with the digital one, achieving a level of authenticity often missed by large studios.
But what does this unique approach mean for the broader filmmaking community? It means that VFX has become a game-changer, thanks to filmmakers like Gareth Edwards. VFX allows filmmakers to bring their wildest ideas to life, whether it's creating otherworldly creatures or building fantastical landscapes. The only limit is their imagination.
Moreover, the decreasing cost of cinema cameras has made it more affordable for filmmakers to achieve cinematic excellence. 'The Creator' was shot on a Sony FX3, a camera that costs only several thousand dollars, significantly reducing production costs.
In the world of VFX, your creativity knows no bounds. It gives filmmakers the freedom to push creative boundaries, experiment with unconventional visuals, and deliver experiences that leave a lasting impact.
Notes: 3D CGI and visual effects compositing is about utilizing different visual data effectively to combine elements in the scene to create a seamless composite. This data often includes the live action shot, 2d stock elements such as smoke and fire, and any added or reconstructed 3d elements. When it comes to the 3d elements adding or recreating a scene we often render out multiple passes and layers to have more control in the final compositing process. These include data passes such as diffuse, glossy direct, Emission, mist passes, shadows, Ambient Occlusion, and more! We often render out these passes on a Multilayer OpenEXR file format so that we can access all of them individually without having to use multiple image sequences…streamlining our compositing process.

Hey Everyone! In this video we share some ways how VFX changes the filmmaking process. We talk about why Gareth Edwards is a VFX maverick who has harnessed the potential of visual effects to bring his visionary stories to life. He started with his first film, 'Monsters,' and continues to demonstrate the power of VFX in his latest work, 'The Creator.' By using similar techniques and approaches you too can create powerful visual for your films and vfx projects. Enjoy! love this! his story is super inspirational, that line about being both creative and technical is so true. I think that's why we love open-source software like Blender and Unreal, the possibilities are literally endless if you take the time to learn VFX on them. I'm always happy to see the community grow on KZfaq and to learn from people like you who also share that same passion 😊 It's a really exciting time to be venturing into the VFX space with all this technology being so much more accessible 🎉 In my opinion, Rogue One is the best out of the recent Star Wars films. I heard a lot of the same team was involved in the series Andor, which is genuinely one of my favorite pieces of media to come out of the Star Wars Universe. Their VFX team did amazing set extensions or would go to an actual location and tweak the architecture to give it a more sci-fi feel, everything felt very intentional and real. It was a treat to watch and the storyline stayed true to Rogue One's tone of revolution and sacrifice, I highly recommend it to all who may have missed it!

Thank you so much! Yes I agree. Love Gareth's story. And his approach to filmmaking is something I relate too as well. The technology is getting better and cheaper and its accesible to everyone. It's getting more competitive for sure as well....but at least we all have a shot to make something. Thanks for watching! And yes Rogue One is one of my favorite as well! Totally agree! I guess you watched that VFX breakdown already haha.

but does that mean lots and lots of rotoscoping and 3d tracking?? cause no green screen
@LightArchitect
@LightArchitect 8 ай бұрын
Hi Keith, Great point! This is true. There is likely some more clean up compositing work like rotoscoping. Whether or not you need to 3d track something also depends on style of camera move and whether or not there is a mocap system communicating with the camera. There are trade-off's with every approach that some filmmakers like more than others. Green screen is great in some scenarios.

@@LightArchitect the movie attempts to gesture to depth, but the story is so surface level, the entire worldbuilding falls apart the moment you look at anything being more than a tonal quality. Which, he has said he likes films to be like dream, which is fair enough and I suppose one could argue this one is just not made for me. But Ive always loved his visual aesthetic, which made this film a big let down for me

I feel that the low viewership numbers on The Creator is a death of everything I love about films. Little personal anecdote to illustrate: There is this high profile state-funded film school in Czech Republic that I was happy to not get into, because later on I found out that they kinda talk bad about any technology and VFX in favor of "the art". But art-films are dead commercially for the longest time already. I thought it was because viewers want to be transported to new unexplored worlds the way I was when watching my favorite movies ... all the Ex Machinas and Arrivals, all the Back To The Futures and Titanics. Yet here Gareth pulls out literally a forward thinking production mirracle, comparable to what Cameron or Zemeckis were doing in their days and people are like: "Yeah, it's not Marvel, I'm not interested." So damn sad. I loved this movie so much.

Yeah the film world is interesting now. Lots of different trains of thought. Personally I don't have a problem with VFX in movies even for the sake of entertainment itself. That in a way is an art form. But I also don't mind when something is trying to be artistic and utilizes VFX. VFX to me is just a tool to help promote a feeling for the viewer. Its also a skill in and of itself that empowers low budgets to compete with the big guys even more. Just my 2 cents. That's interesting that the film school you mention talks bad about technology...especially since (in my opinion) technology is going to be the thing that helps the lower budget art films compete with the big guys.
