It's very clear to know what different in these words!!! Cuz VFX and FX are translated into the same word in Chinese "特效", I finally realize the meanings of them. Your explanation is concise and explicit. Thank you!!!!!

Sometimes vfx is called digital effects, which to some degree is ok, but in some it conversation might confuse. The main thing is not to confuse fluid simulation or particle generation for VFX, because as we know vfx covers many fields, including simulation and particles. So by puting them under FX / digital effects creates less confusion. I just thought why not to call simulations and particles CGE, which would stand for computer generated effects. :)

I have a tiny query ... a logo created in illustrator, a digital painting, even something drawn in Microsoft paint can be considered CGI? or even the 2d elements used in this video like the infographics showing the flowchart of vfx ,cgi

Hi, thank you for your warm words. In regards to your query: all that you mentioned is not CGI, but 2D creations. CGI is 3D, and is anything that not only has Y and X axis in space, but Z axis as well, therefore you can move and rotate your element in 3D dimensional space. If you take 2D elements and transform them into 3D by giving them Z axis - you make them be 3D, aka CGI. Otherwise they can only be moved in 2D space like a paper.

correct, 2d animation is not CGI, and a 2d character in your provided link is not CGI either. It is VFX though, as 2d character's integration into a footage requires tracking and compositing. If that character would be created in 3D space using a 3D software, it would be CGI, but now, he is drawn in 2D space.

Digital Effect mixes between CGI (simulation + abstract design) and VFX (motiongraphic + compositing). It is an advanced level.

Only a compositor implements ready-made 3D objects, he doesn't have to create 3D characters. Vfx artist though, can do both, create and implement. It depends. If you want to create a complete 3d model, texture and more - then CGI. If you want to animate the character - then animator. If you want to integrate the 3d character into a live-action shot - then VFX.

In short - VFX, as it involves live action footage. By the looks of it they definitely had a fantastic makeup on awesome actor. They could have enhanced the mouth by making it bigger in post, which is VFX, including tracking. However, by checking this scene once again, i believe the mouth could have been made in 3D. The mouth itself is CGI and is used in live action shot, which makes it VFX.

Vfx involves assets being integrated into filmed footage. Digital Fx involves only 3D simulations like fire, water, etc.

Good question, there is no difference, it is the same thing. "Special effects" is used as a synonym of "practical effects".

Is CGI the entire screen or can it be just small details? Or is that VFX? For example the light sabers in the old Star Wars movies

CGI can be just a 3d model of a dragon, but once you integrate it into filmed footage, that process is a part of VFX. Saber light is simulated digital FX, but once integrated into footage, it is VFX. Complicated, I know. In short saber is VFX and yes, CGI can be a small detail or entire sceen, like in video games, everything is CGI and FX, no VFX at all.

@@FireballVFX Yes, I know you need CGI skill, but even if the character is made yourself, when its put into the live action footage is it still referred to as VFX?

If you only integrate a given to you 3D character - it would be VFX. Anything that includes integrating an external element to live action footage is VFX. But if you create this 3D character - you need CGI skill. If you just keep this character in 3D world - you still use CGI skill and you are a CGI artist. Once you start to integrate it to live footage - you requite VFX artist skills. If you do both - you are a VFX artist and CGI artist as one - or just VFX artist who has CGI skills. I hope it is more clear. Let me know. ;)

Sir, at 1:04 you mentioned CG, it means CGI right? and second question related to VFX where you said any elements such as 2D, 3D are integrated into live footage. So, are these elements made using CGI? and if I talk about real life elements like a real life background integrate into another live footage doesn't it make it "composting" rather than calling it VFX? please answer these 3 questions it's really bothering me.... I'm a programmer and not much into this field it's just I'm curious.

At 0:24 you said "VFX uses elements". So, I just want to ask these elements doesn't necessarily have to CGI elements that's 2D, 3D and photo-realistic elements in into live-action shot. It can also be simply real life footage or another live-shot being integrated into live-action am I right? Please correct me If I'm wrong!

By the way, what is your opinion on upcoming Disney's live action animated movie Lion King? coz you yourself said in the beginning of the video while "explaining VFX" that CGI doesn't include live action shot. However upcoming Lion King is fully made using CGI or just say more complex CGI with some high quality render which resulted in photo realistic quality. we can tell Jungle Book was really live action animated coz Mowgli scene's were shot live and animals were CGI but here lion king is fully CGI with no live shot, no motion capturing, nothing and they are saying it is a live action. I think you might have the answer.

@@FireballVFX Sir I'm cent % agreed with you they are you using it as a marketing tool to promote. And because of your comment I further researched on this debatable topic and I found out that you're were absolutely correct it's indeed made using VR and AR technologies to create the virtual world with some pretty intense complex CGI. And I am 99% sure there is no live-action shot being involved. I'm leaving 1% because once the film studios release "behind the scenes" videos on KZfaq after the release of the movie. We'll have notice if there is any green screens involved LOL:D that's how we'll get to know if it's live-action or not.

As an audio guy, SFX is annoying because now they are usually referring to special effects but some still mean audio. I applied to a position asking for sfx and they wanted special effects. 😅

Animation can be a part of CGI if it is in a 3D environment. If it is any other form of animation (like 2D), then it is not a part of CGI.

Animation cannot be compared to CGI. They are completing each other, or not, depending on the project. Animation is the technique of making an object move in space through software or drawing. CGI (computer generated imagery) is anything that is created in 3D by using the computer, it can be a 3D model, a digital effects, etc. Animation, like 2D, on its own, is not a part of CGI, it is just a 2D animation, like cartoon. Animation technique, if it is in 3D software, becomes a part of CGI world and is used to make objects move in a 3D space. I hope it is clear. ; )

I must say that officially we have such abbreviations as VFX, SFX and CGI. In regards to FX, it is not official and today I would probably differentiate it as DFX, just like you suggest. To be precise, FX/DFX is anything that is related to simulations and dynamics. 1) DFX, like fire or explosions, are created using the computer - so it is a part of CGI 2) If the same explosions and fire is created on set - it is SFX
