Thanks for these informative videos . the Pre-multiplied and Straight Alpha is important topic to learn . i had a problem with it when i was working in a full feature film , the green screen shots i keyed in AE and sent it to DaVinci Resolve for color grading was looking strange, had a black border, then i learned about the Pre-multiplied and was able to correct it in "Resolve ", it turns out Resolve interpret the alpha as "Straight" and i had to re set it in the settings. another thing i had a problem with was "the black level" there was different types of it i dont remember what its called , it did change the contrast or the Gamma, making the image look strange, and i had to re set it also. if you could look it up and talk about it it would be great, although i think its more related to color correction than VFX. and one more thing :) "the bit depth" option in After effect has an impact on the image quality especially on Keying and roto, its better to set it on 32 bpc for higher camera codecs and raw formats, and lastly :D :) the "set project work space" option in AE also i had to play with it when working with raw LOG format, to probably do keying. maybe thats why other VFX software such as Nuke are better that AE at handling High quality or Raw formats. if you cloud talk about these topics in a video and clear them out for me it would be awesome , not many people talk about them.

Thank you so much for this marvelously clear explanation. It is enormously helpful! I'm a little confused about one little thing.... In your Premultiplied & Straight alpha channel examples, why do both of these have such a large feather, effectively giving the perimeter of the subject a wide semi-transparent haze even on the examples you described as looking fine? That threw me off. Because that feather seemed wrong to me on all the examples, it was a little hard for me to clearly see exactly what you were seeing as *looking right* or *looking wrong* on each alpha channel interpretation. You explained the color spread of semi-transparent areas in the "Straight" method quite nicely, and I can see that part clearly in your examples. I'm just still a little unclear on what you're seeing as fine or not so good on the rest of the edges which aren't semi-transparent. This tutorial is EXTREMELY helpful in explaining what the alpha channel tools are and how to use them. But if you're up for sharing a bit more, I think it might help me to further calibrate my thinking about this if I were to understand what the purpose of that feather was. (?) Thanks again!

@@FireballVFX Yes, gotcha. That makes a lot of sense. Thank you so very much for taking the time to answer my question!
@FireballVFX
@FireballVFX 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, I am glad you found this tutorial helpful. If I understood your question correctly, and if you are referring to 7:47-10:41 - then a large feather is there on purpose so that it would be easier to spot what I am talking about, however, in a real process of compositing a feather edge has to be visually seamless and look very natural. When I say "fine", I am referring to AE's technical interpretation of an alpha channel as being correct, I am not talking about the artistic or correct visual way of setting up alpha - it is all about making the software accept alpha on it's end - make it connect the dots. I hope I understood your question well, let me know if not and I will try to answer it better.

Thank you so much for the excellent lesson ~I think your lesson is the best ever in the world. thank you. I'm a After Effects user using other adobe programs also. by the way I have questions ~ Is illustrator AI file straight alpha? or premultiplied alpha? I'm confused. Does AI file have alpha channel or matte color? by making background empty in illustrator, can we say that AI file has an alpha channel? I'm wondering how to get an alpha channel in normal AI file. Could you give me some advise for that matter?
@FireballVFX
@FireballVFX 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, thank you very much. I don't use Illustrator and not sure how it operates. However, an alpha channel depends on the type of file that you choose to export as, so if it is .png, it will provide option for alpha channel, so just empty background is not enough, you have to export it with the right file format.

Hey Man, while explaining SEPARATE ALPHA you said " It's a separate file of BLACK & WHITE IMAGE also known s LUMA MATTE " . So this Black & White Image is the Real Black & White Image, like one shows the Colored Image in Greyscale ? Or you're saying It's the White that is Kept & Black that is deleted just like a LUMA MATTE image ??
@FireballVFX

Hey, separate alpha is literally a separate video/sequence file which if opened and played will show you the video of black and white (and grey) - whites and greys are stored in visible rgb channel.

@@satyamdograreallife Let me confirm. Separate Alpha is an RGB image with no alpha channel in it, it only contains RGB but of white and black values/colors. @FireballVFX
@FireballVFX Жыл бұрын
Green screen removal in live process has to be done locally by live software (as After Effects only works for non-live, as far as i know). In your case I would look for how to remove green screen in OBS, there must be such feature, but i dont think it will be super clean keying. If you want to prepare a video to be used later in live OBS session, then yes - after effects is the software to go with.

Don't trust this explanation of alpha channels. Quicktime does accept alpha channels, the example given here uses a 'codec' that doesn't - H264. Quicktime is a container for many codecs and is not a video format. This is basic stuff. Also, to actually understand alpha channels the mathematics is not hard and is a foundation that every compositor should know. AfterEffects hides these basic concepts which is why it's not used in any serious cinema VFX pipeline. Understanding how alpha channels work mathematically will help you to use any compositing software.
@Turdlehead
@Turdlehead 2 жыл бұрын
Seriously? You claim that you can't export *_a Quicktime with alpha from AE_* ??! You don't mention that that is (well, ok, _was_ ) *_A WINDOWS LIMITATION_* ?!! Of course, you can export a QT with alpha… using ProRes 4444! 🙄🤦🏼‍♂ And yeah, in the meantime even under archaic Windows.
